With the heatwave hitting most areas in the world, northern hemisphere at least, this week looks at escaping it. Please post photos of a summertime occurrence, not a wishful thinking or remembrance of a wintertime activity taken in December. However, sometimes it may actually occur in July, like the glacier photo below, which at 10,000 feet (3000 meters) I had to wear an insulated jacket. It also doesn't have to be weather related, so use your imagination.

As always, standard rules apply:
  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.

Last day. Been kind of light - which is good for me - but get your entries in! Now is your chance to make it hard for me.

Well, has been an interesting week and it seems that the weather has moderated some. Perhaps should have the topic again with the effect on the weather – just kidding. Thanks for the great entries and now for the hard part.

@Strider64 Love the B&W as it invokes a level of coolness to the overall scene. Great outing on lazy days of summer.

@someoldguy What an inviting scene with the path leading you the water. Better yet, deserted! One suggestion might be to crop it a little tighter to get rid of the pine branch clump in the upper right corner as it becomes distracting.

@lkalliance What is summer without tennis or baseball. Great crowd watching the practice, but that may be the issue. You can still show the crowd – and back of heads – by tightening up and may bring more focus to the players. If the blonde is your wife, she would be right around the crop line, so have her step to the left to fully include in the photo.

@C0ncreteBl0nde Is that you sitting on the concrete slab? Can just feel that cool water over the rocks. Nice chop to the water, but while she was relatively still, a slightly longer shutter could have shown a silky flow of the water.

@piatigorsky Just dawned on me. It is lunch time as I am typing this and you are making me hungry. Be right back. There, now that is taken care of. Very nice film photo and the subject – consuming shaved ice – is definitely a favorite way to cool down.

@coolguy4747 One of my favorites…and not because considering selling my canoe and purchasing a foldable kayak. Nice calm water in the lake and a great day. Photographically – one major issue. Many times you can get away with it with mountains and background rolling landscapes, but becomes obvious with shorelines (and ocean horizon). The shoreline needs to be horizonal, otherwise the water is draining to the left. Straighten along the shoreline.

@_timo_redux_ Ah yes, relaxing in the pool with a little light reading. Don’t even want to think about the problem he was trying to solve.

Okay, I really appreciate every one of you and your entries this week. But because I must, I will give you my top three - I'd love to know which images were your own favorites too!

Appreciate the commentary. I've played with this photo a lot, and I've tried straightening it before and decided I like it better this way. When straightened it feels like it loses its edge and becomes a simple posed snapshot. Definitely a personal preference thing, but for me the tilt more accurately captures the sense of "adventure" felt in the moment, rocking in the middle of a big lake.

No, no...I WISH that young lady were me! LOL! She was someone who asked me to take photos of her that we made into a sort of iMovie/slideshow for her husband for their anniversary. Lovely lady took lovely photos.

Thank you for the spot on the podium and congrats to @someoldguy and @Strider64. Looking forward to the next contest!
