Alrighty then…what have we got here?

Lots of entries this week and that's great. I guess that's why I went with the simple brief. It doesn't make judging this any easier though.

Got to be honest, a lot of you either don't know what a headshot is or you took the 'creative' element and ran away with it. :p

Honourable mentions:
needfx - nice take on the subject. Well done. Creative as always.

jradburn- great first post. Tip: focus on the eyes.

Illuminated - beautiful model. Underexposed shot though.

uvafan1 - Not strictly a headshot per se, but I like the look you were gong for. Maybe would've cropped it tighter?

Parkin Pig - Same again, this one would've been the winner if it were tighter around the face. This gentleman appears to have a story.

NukeIT - Frankie looks great.

elecronique - Nice depth of field, separation and lighting. Pity about your models expression. ;)

gaswerks - Great capture of a beautiful kid.

mojolicious' daughter - Encourage her with photography. She's got an eye for it. This image works really well and the processing looks great too.

MacRy - Nobody on here takes a better selfie.

Apple fanboy - Okay, not strictly speaking a headshot, but a great image nonetheless.

Okay moving on to the winners for the week:

Third place - DirtySocks85: Those eyes! Only thing I would've done differently is frame the face tighter. Beautiful.

Second place - MCH-1138: Technically speaking, probably the best shot of the thread. Sharp, well lit and well framed. The caption is hilarious too.

First place - rolsskk: Just nailed the brief. Classic headshot. Great lighting, great posing…just a great shot. Well done.

Thanks for the second-place nod and the comments! Great job, everyone.

Getting the specular highlights under control was more challenging than I anticipated. For those who are interested, the shot was lit with two speedlights. The first was bounced off of a sheet of foam core and then through part of a white bed sheet to approximate a ginormous soft-box just out of frame to camera-left. To give you a sense of scale, the model is about 9 inches tall, and I used about a 30x36 inch section of the sheet, maybe 9 inches away. There is an off-white wall a few feet to camera-right that is acting as a reflector to provide a tiny bit of fill. The second light (with a red gel) is illuminating the backdrop.

Congratulations rolsskk! That's a fantastic shot, full of atmosphere.

Well done everyone else too! Good shots this week :)

Note to self: must find more time for my photography!!!!!! :(

congratulations winners Rolsskk, MCH-1138 & DirtySocks85!!

well deserved winners & fantastic work

kudos to The Bad Guy for clearing his blood/alcohol ratio in such a small amount of time :D

I was really having a hard time deciding if I was going to twist the theme or not. otherwise, this would have been my entry

I prefer the one you went with. IMO it's more needfx!
Also how did you mount your camera to the telescopic sight on your rifle? Did you have to get an adaptor? :D

much obliged for that! it is so well lit, that it deserved the explanation! here's hoping you also have a bts shot

it's flimsily attached with some duct tape, zip ties & sticky tack :D

for those of you wondering, I missed.

Another week of superb entries. An excellent winner - a classic headshot indeed with perfect lighting.
Also love MCH-1138's great shot, and the amount of effort which went into it.
Good judging Bad Guy - thanks for the comments.

No clever BTS shots for this one. Actually, I didn't take a shot of my final setup, so this is a hasty reenactment. For the actual shot, the sheet was stretched out to create a smooth surface, but this gives you a basic idea as to how it was set up.

Behind the bed sheet, the speedlight was bounced off a sheet of white foam core because shooting directly into the sheet was giving me too much of a hotspot in the specular highlights, even when zooming the flash head out to the widest angle.
