This week's contest theme is Sorrow. I searched through the Master Contest List and there hasn't been a theme such as this since "Grief" in 2016.

Some ideas I thought of for this theme are
Crying
Death - cemetery
Something broken or destroyed
Something medical
Broken heart
Any scene that expresses depression or loneliness
I have also included some photos from my archive as examples.
While this is not a happy topic, I hope you will all enjoy the challenge and I look forward to seeing what your entries will be.
As always, standard rules apply:

The photographs must be your own work.

  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now.
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest will end July 5th, 2025 at noon PDT.

Less than two days left in the contest and only four entries...was the theme too morose? I hope some more of you will join the contest. :)

The contest is now closed. Critiques and awards will be up later today. Thank you to all who submitted entries. :)

@oblomow - When I first saw this photo I said “Yes! This is exactly what I had in mind!” I love this submission. It’s not only the headstones, but the snow atop of them that speak “sorrow” to me. Ice, cold, and death. Excellent image; the POV is great too.

@goldmac2006 - I’m glad you clarified where this photo came from or I might have been a little confused on how a beautiful, healthy pink rose said “sorrow,” but since you did, I recognize the silver racks/rails behind it as the framework that lowers a casket in the ground and I understand. It’s a nice juxtaposition of the flower and the grave. Nice work at a sorrowful time and as an entry for this theme.

@Jonk1183 - I’m sorry Jonk, perhaps I should have reached out to you privately before this, but I have looked and studied this photograph and I have NO idea what it is. Your title says “English Bulldog” but I can’t make that out in the photo. Is it just me? Does anyone else see it? The black and white and the shadowy light are perfect for this theme, but I am at a loss to make out the subject. If this is a photo of a lost pet, that is certainly sorrowful, but I’m sorry, I cannot see it.

@Snowlover - The dying of a beautiful flower (is it a Lily?) is indeed sorrowful. The light is really nice in this photo as is the sharpness of the subject compared to the blurred background. The way the dead/dying flower is drooping symbolizes the bent head of someone in sorrow. This is a nice entry.

@squawk7000 - I’ve noticed as I’ve perused these entries that the black and white really bring out the theme to me. There is something about the lack of color that signifies “sad” to me in this context more so than the opposite. It’s a lovely photo, but I’m afraid it doesn’t make me feel sorrow. It DOES however evoke an “empty” emotion.

@_timo_redux_ - At first I was confused by the dates on the headstone and the caption “Baby Warren”, then the lightbulb came on and I decided this must be the grave of a mother and child. Perhaps a young mother who died in childbirth, which is indeed VERY sorrowful. I like the contrast of the gray headstone and the blue Hyacinth as well as the gray leaves on the headstone and the dying brown leaves on the ground. It really ties it all together. This is an excellent photo taken with a great POV and it is certainly “sorrowful.” I would like to hear the story on this if you know it.

@mtbdudex - I’m glad you noted “Berlin Wall” on this entry, it really brings a lot of meaning to this statue that would otherwise be missing. A very sorrowful statue indeed. I would have removed the piece of post in the upper left corner, but things like that distract me where they don’t bother others. Also, a lot of photographers are more of a purist than I. :) The subject is excellent for the theme and it’s a very sharp, well-executed photograph.

@Janichsan - Again, to begin with, the black and white really pushes this image into the theme for me. It is indeed a sad face (statue) to gaze upon and I don’t know if it’s intentional or just a coincidence of time/weather, but it looks as if the angel has tears coming from her eyes. That, combined with the way the head is bowed and the eyes are cast downward all create an air of great sadness. Was this statue in a cemetery? I’d love to hear more about it. Excellent entry.

This was not an easy theme and I really appreciate the entries that those of you who participated came up with. Here are my choices for the podium:

Third place: @Janichsan

Second place: @_timo_redux_

First place: @oblomow

———————————————————————————

Thank you again for entering; as always everyone’s submissions were great. @Jonk1183: You are new to the weekly contest and it’s always exciting to have new members participate so I hope my inability to grasp your entry will not deter you from entering again.

With that, I turn this over to @oblomow.

I could see it fine on my end, but I don’t know maybe the format wasnt compatible 🤷🏼‍♂️

Thank you for the kind words.
This is the lily memorial for our beloved Jack Russel, Elmo, who passed 4 years ago.
It usually starts blooming in February- the month he left us.
This year, because of late rains, it keeps on sending up new stalks and blooms. 🐶

Congrats to podium winners.

I can see Jonk's bulldog , no problem.

DANG IT! I wonder if it's a mental block or my computer? Thank you for letting me know @Snowlover
I can see it, too..... One thing which occurs to me is that he didn't insert and post the full image, he only had the attachment there; did you click on the attachment? That opens up the full image. It is hard to see, as there's lots of shadow tones more than highlights, but yep, it's an English Bulldog -- primarily his head and face.

Thanks for the praise and the podium placement! Yes, this statue stands in fact in a cemetery, as part of a headstone.

Thanks @C0ncreteBl0nde for the feedback. A good and challenging subject. I agree that B&W really suits the theme. Beautiful entries from everyone, and congrats to the podium.

with the single bird in the photo I was alluding to the old nursery rhyme about magpies

One for sorrow,
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret never to be told

OoOoOoOo....I missed that reference, too! Doggoneit...maybe I'm getting too old for this job! :)

I could just about make it out, it was a small picture and very dark. Using a MBP. Not to worry, good to see you on the contest!

I'm almost certain it's the grave of a young woman who died in childbirth; so frightfully more common one hundred years ago. There must be dozens like her just in that cemetery.

The pair of hyacinth blossoms is what initially caught my eye, and then I saw that it was like each person got a flower.

All fleeting: I went back a few days later to try different angles but the flowers were gone.

How odd that the flowers were gone. Thank you @_timo_redux_ for sharing that story; it really adds to the already excellent image.
