My area (the NYC area) is currently in a drought ; so in keeping with this , this weeks contest subject is DRY . I don't think this has ever been a contest topic , so I'm hoping for some interesting entries . Have fun!
As always, standard rules apply:
  • The photographs must be your own work
  • You may only submit one photo per contest.
  • No commenting or liking photos until after the judging has taken place.
  • This contest runs for about a week, starting now.
  • At the end of the competition, the judge (last week's winner) will choose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • The 1st place winner will start a new thread here with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.
  • Contest ends November 24 , 6.00 PM NYC time (EST)

Still alive ..... got caught up in a major time waster yesterday . Results in a bit .

Just the usual disclaimer : I’m certainly not a qualified reviewer of digital images . I’m not a qualified reviewer of anything , I’m just an old fart with cataracts and bifocals . Anyway ; some commentary and the winners;

@mollyc : Nicely composed sort of monochromatic image . The vignetting is really effective , was it done in camera or in post?

@chuckee : Doesn’t get much drier than this ! Wonderfully big cacti … in a botanical garden ?

@Sierra Vista : Rocky trail through a hot dried out landscape . Not the kind of walk I prefer . But maybe there’s a cold beer waiting in the town in the distance .

@C0ncreteBl0nde : What a different take on the subject . Who knows how long those flowers have been there . Hope there’s someone who’ll replace them . Makes me feel kinda sad .

@oblomow : Tides out and it’s high and dry …is the boat abandoned , or just neglected ? I think I would have tried to include a bit more open space to the right of the boat to balance things out a bit .

@Apple_Glen_UK: Warm … dry …palm trees . I’ll be wishing for all 3 in a few days if the weather forecast is accurate . In the foreground , it appears to have been mown and planted , part of a small farm maybe ?

@lkalliance : Sure is dry … where is this? Over the Badlands in the western US? Interesting strata in the rocks . Was this taken from a commercial flight , a small plane traveling much lower , or some sort of drone shot ?

@_timo_redux_ : Another western U.S. shot? Utah ? What’s going on in the foreground with the greenery? Intentionally out of focus ? Wind motion ? Taken from a moving vehicle?

@Snowlover : The dried out garden in the fall . Still clearing out my weed patch . Nice job isolating foreground from background . Prime lens wide open?

@coolguy4747 : Another aerial shot . Over Utah , maybe , or Arizona ? Is that a river or a road snaking its’ way through the cliffs? Can’t really make it out .

@piatigorsky : Film ! Grain ! Nicely composed and processed . The subjects seem to pop out . Negative scan or from a print? Great colors considering the roses are dried out .

@ mtbdudex : Another different take … Great reflections of the sky , really colorful image . But 4 people fit under that umbrella ?

@kendallm : Dry streets , dry drain , dry scooter (hopefully the thing in the street hasn’t fallen from the scooter .Any idea what the arch is in the background?

@thirsty_monk : Nicely composed ; but what’s the dry leaf resting on ? Wet pavement? Fresh , never driven on , asphalt , some sort of printed background ?

So , the winners ….

3rd tie @Snowlover , @mtbdudex

2nd @piatigorsky

1st @mollyc

Thanks for the podium finish. This was a negative scan, as I currently only have a b&w enlarger in my darkroom, though I do intend to try my hand at color printing when I have the time. The colors came out as a surprise—I knew that push processing could shift the colors more toward green, but in real life the background was not green at all! It's likely I also need to thank the nearly exhausted C41 chemistry I had on hand for the interesting color shift on this particular roll.
