The topic this week is "Reflection without Water".

I looked at the Masters List and the topic "Reflection" was lastly a theme in 2020. This time, I would like to restrict it a bit - I want to see some reflections but water as a "mirror" shall not be used! :)
So get creative and have fun!

Contest ends September 10 at 12 am (midnight) GMT +2 hours.

Please remember that these standard rules apply:

  • Do not comment, vote, react or click “like” on images prior to the winners being announced. In keeping with our most recent tradition, violators may be awarded first place. Henceforth this shall be known as the Molly-ing rule in honour of our friend and fellow perpetrator.
  • The photographs must be your own work.
  • This contest runs for one week. If in doubt, please check the title or description.
  • At the end of the week, The Judge will choose a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photo, providing as much feedback as possible.
  • If the Judge is unable to complete the selection within 48 hours of the deadline, then last week's 2nd place has to step in. 3rd place takes over should 2nd place be similarly unable to officiate.
  • The 1st place Winner will start a new thread with the topic/theme of their choice, and act as the Judge for that contest. (Winner has 48 hours to create a new theme, after that it defers to 2nd place).
  • Be sure to update the Contest Master List as soon as you post a new theme.

no i think he used a glass of some sort under the lens to make a reflection. like some people use their iphone held right under the lens as a mirror surface.

You got in before me with the same thought ;)

Cheers :)

Hugh
Oh, good, it wasn't just me, then! I tend to be too literal and I thought, "what?? He says not to use water as a reflective surface and then he does just that?" The very title of the competition is "Reflection Without Water." Ehhhh???? Whatever the technique he actually did use in the image shared, IMHO this was not exactly the best example to use when setting out the desired criteria for this competition......

Unwanted reflection - time for Photoshop and identical photo with lighting moved to a different reflected area to the rescue (or re-shoot with the doors open - but this is not a pocket door into the wall, leaving a stacked 1/3 visible). If there was a TV in that stand or framed artwork they would be potential reflection traps to be aware of when initially taking the photo.

Great entries so far - thank you very much! For the ones who are still on hunting images: contest will be closed in 7:42 hrs :)

Thank you very much for all the great images. You created a hard time for me by uploading this high quality of images. I thought that I would have make my life a bit easier by not allowing reflections via water, but you taught me better.
Since I only was one time a judge before in this nice community some years ago. I did my best but I am no expert at all and these are only some personal views.

@Strider64

Nice picture of your (?) eye! Good captured reflection into your garden and it is not entirely clear with which tool you did it since I cannot see a big camera or a smartphone in the reflection. So you did a great job because I cannot look behind the scenes on how you took the shot.

@mtbdudex

My wife and I are thinking about the tool you used for this reflection since nearly one week. Great job and great image. The observers eyes are directly forced to look into the happy eyes of the child and I love the dark background around it as a contrast to the happy eyes.

@cthompson94

Gym pictures are so important for the motivation. :) You did a great job to capture this moment of being exhausted during 2 sets. The dark surrounding and the t-shirt are doing their job to create a "dangerous" area. And I don't mean it negative! Personally, I would have tried to make the reflection in the mirror a bit brighter.

@mollyc

In contrast to the gym picture before it is such a lovely image. I can directly feel the good vibes and would love to go into that shop - whatever it is... :D
I am not entirely sure where the focus point is or if you even planed to have one sharp point, but I just love the vibe.

@tizeye

Great job. I am completely lost how the room/door in the wall looks in general, but it shows to me simply the magic of reflections. I am feeling good vibes when I look into the reflected garden with a river/pond.

@oblomow

Cool looking statue and with the "roundings" I see you two times in the reflections. I am not sure what it should display, but I have an imagination of what it could be. :) Due to the different reflections, there are so many details and I could look at this image for a long time while I constantly see some new things. Great!

@TheYayAreaLiving 🎗

You framed the city and this cool looking building in a nice way. Since I am from Germany, I do not know which city this is but I love skyscrapers. If I am not completely mistaken, I see some very weak reflections but I am unable to tell what the reflections are showing.

@Jumpthesnark

Awesome retro-image. It gives me some kind of motivation to work on your goals and looking forward despite setbacks (the broken mirror). I guess this is lots of interpretation but therefore we all love images :)

@Snowlover

Reflections and the magic behind it is shown each day in our routines. You captured this moment in a good way. I am thinking what the "red reflection" is since thursday, but I have only the conclusion, that it might be some curtains. And this reflection is splitting the focus of the image in two different parts. I like it!

@dmb8021
Reflections of mirrored buildings are one of my main "attractions" when I am in citys that have it. It always fascinates me and you did an awesome job also with the composition of the image. Nice leading lines to an even more fascinating architecture in the back.

@Clix Pix
Again I am facing an image where I have no clue at what I am looking. And this engages me to think about it even more. But I have no conclusion at all. So please enlighten me :) I have the slight impression that it could something from an older car (or an oldtimer) but on the other side, this thinking of me makes no sense. Good captured shot where you have to think about what your eyey are seeing!

@CooperBox

There are so many details in your shot that I discover! And probably even more that I did not see yet. Focus point is very clear for me (& very good since I just love the interior of Mercedes cars). Well done!

@OldMacs4Me

To be honest, at first I just looked at the picture without reading your comment. Great job, I really did not see that it the reflection was done in post processing. If my brain woud have directly started to think about it, it should have been a conclusion, but I was just concentrated of the two rainbows with that nice geometry. So, great job!

To sum it up: there are too less spots on the podium.

Anyways, these are my favourite images that I have to pick for the sake of this contest:

Third place goes to: @Jumpthesnark

Second place goes to: @mollyc

First place goes to @mtbdudex

Congratulations to all of you and thank you all for your contribution to inspire me with new ideas!

Thank you very much for the critique. This gym shoot was my first time shooting someone in manual and and I couldn't use flash in the gym so that didn't help so for the whole shoot set I went for that more darker tone look. Looking back and along with your comment ill probably try to do what I can to get more light next time since it was a fun learning experience for me and my friend since he is trying to learn for videos.

Great entries everyone! looking forward to the next contest!

oh thank you for the mention!

The focal point on my image is the flower pots, but given that this is a film photo, and that the glass itself sort of doubled things in the reflection, tack sharpness isn't as strong as it would be with a digital image. 🙂 I know the flowers in the pots aren't anything close to sunflowers, but I liked the concept of the word on the window working for a theme. 🙂
