I found a new thread while trawling through MR this evening... a firmware update for the ATI 2600XT cards in Mac Pro (Early 2008) models has finally been released...

Kudos to the OP of this thread for spotting it!

I've downloaded and installed it... will be interesting to see what happens when I disconnect monitor no. 2!:D

I have the same problem with the freezes!

I don't think it is resonable that I should pay 200 dollars for a 8800 card, because Apple made a fault with the ATI 2600!

Reasonable enough. But.. do ATI take any of the blame here?

It's not like it's the first ATI card that has had problems.

I'm sure Apple don't want this either and are trying their best,
but they don't make graphics cards themselves and they have
to rely on ATI and nVIDIA to deliver. If these are ATI problems
and I worked for Apple, I'd be having stern words with them now.

The 2600XT firmware update is here!

This update is for Mac Pro computers with one or more ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics cards installed, running Mac OS X 10.5.2 or later with the Leopard Graphics Update.

It updates the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics card firmware on all of the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics cards in the Mac Pro to improve system stability.

Installing this update on a 2.8 GHz Mac Pro system configured with multiple hard drives or more than 2GB of RAM will result in the system meeting Energy Star 3.0 requirements.

You're right! Point taken!

Still I would LOVE my machine to work!

Any expriences on the up date?:)

ATI 2600 Firmware Pops Up In Software Update

As i'm sure people have noticed, this is also pops up under Software Update in Apple Menu now (not sure how long it's been there). Just applied it with no problems via this method. I cannot vouch for post up this string about it making the card quieter. Analysis might be affected by me blasting my Sonos via line-in through my headphones. ;)
