MacMall Report -- 8800 status "backordered" as expected, no ship date indicated. I ordered something else on the same bill and they shipped that (will arrive today -- too bad it's not the 8800). I'll report if I get a chance on whether their estimates of 8800 arrival are accurate ("we're getting a shipment on March 5" per my earlier post).

Why is it taking so long to get an 8800?!?!?!?!?

Those of you looking at 8800s--

have you tried the dual monitor fakeout workaround?

I believe it's worked for all who have tried it.

Save $300+ until apple gets this figured out, or just use the workaround forever if necessary...

Unfortunately, using Dell 3007WFP-HC -- only one input. Naughty Dell on the connection front (fixed with the newer 3008), but awesome monitor otherwise.

(Aside, naughty me for using a Dell monitor with my new MP. If Apple had been keeping pace with monitor quality in their ACD line, I'd have gone that route. But that's the subject of other threads I'm sure.)

My 8800 is ordered.

Yep, but try getting hold of a dell 3008 at the moment, it ain't easy. Apparently due to some factory burning down in China combined with some faulty component recall.
I'm also currently waiting for a 8800 equipped MP to ship. I just ordered it after waiting a few weeks to see if people reported the 8800 as reliable (I got a full refund on my last MP due to the 2600xt freezing issue).

Mac Pro ATI 2600 card comparison -- with and without issues

I started a thread on the Apple forums to see if a particular batch of ATI 2600 cards can be associated with problems we're having. If you'd like to participate please post here

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1421457&tstart=0

I know some in this thread have previously posted that 102B3610100 cards seemed to be bad, but others said theirs was good. Perhaps there is a different bit of information that will start to emerge.

Thanks -sailmac

Just thought I would update after a few weeks with the 8800GT. NO problem with it at all, no screen freezes or any of that, so i think it was the ATI cards.

The only problem I have still is the restart after sleep problem but I think that is software.

Hi everyone, I'm having the same dancing pixel problem / screen freezes.

I have a question for those of you using the work-a-round. I have an Apple Cinema Display and it only has one connection. Is there an adapter I can buy so I can have both ports connected with my one display? Is there anyone out there with an ACD and able to use the work-a-round?

Thanks for any help!

There is no fix or work around. There is a flaw with the video card. You can either replace the card or live with the issue. I would just buy a 8800GT and get over it. To my knowledge there is no dual link dvi to single link dvi adapter.

Dual link does not mean 2 ports it is still one port, just a different way of transmitting the signal.

Also you might be able to use a KVM to trick it, but i am not sure.

I know what it means. He was asking if there was a way of using 2 ports to feed the single dual link dvi from the cinema display to trick the video card with the dual port trick...

Well I don't want to have to wait weeks for an 8800 but I don't know what else to do. Maybe I'll just order an old ATI X1900 or something.
BTW, the Mac Pro ATI 2600 Freezing Issue support topic thread at Apple was locked today and this thread has begun with responses to that as well as more updates regarding this lockup thing.

Just sayin'.....

Thanks for the update. Hopefully we will see some official statement from apple...

To my knowledge the dual monitor (and the dual monitor fakeout) workaround IS working for people. Has anyone had this not work yet?

It's working for me going on a week now, and I was getting freezes constantly before...

I just got my quad/2600 last Thursday and I have not experienced any of the lockup or dancing bit problems (knocking on wood). Just for giggles, when I got the machine, I hooked my monitor up to Video 2 and have left it there ever since. Maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones. :)

Well, since Apple locked one of the threads regarding the freeze issue I thought maybe we might see an update soon. Today, this showed up at xlr8yourmac.com:

ATI 2600XT Update coming? (reader notes on testing) - I can't verify the following is true but posting as a FYI (from a reader mail a few days ago - playing catchup on 2008 Mac Pro related mails today)
"just want to let you know that apple is working on the graphics problem with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Cards.
I got an invitation to an AppleSeed to test a Mac Pro update. After the login it says its an bios update for the ati cards. It's not ready yet but the download should be possible in the next days...
So, there's coming something to solve the problems...
(I asked if it was an actual flash update to the card or an updated driver/or ROM Xtender file (which is sort of like a software loaded firmware/patch file)-Mike)
it's a new rom version for the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT:
ROM-Version: 113-B1480A-252
I'm not sure what it was before, something like 113-B1480A-234 - the last three numbers went up.
Officially it's not public yet - just want to let you know that Apple is working on the problem.
No more freezes with the new ROM :)"
I'll write an ATI contact today although when it comes to releases on OEM/Apple products often lips are tight...

Update: called Apple TODAY, and they had me run some tests. End results is that they're sending me a replacement card. What does it mean? Opinions please ...

4God, this is an interesting development and report. My 8800 is still backordered at Macmall, so if this 2600 update works, may be in time to cancel the order. How is an update like this usually pushed? If not automatic, please keep us posted on this thread with news, links, etc.

Yeah, I was about to order a X1900 from the previous version MacPro (in desperation to get a new card sooner) when I came across the article this morning. I would think that we should be checking Software update after 2pm pacific time today and/or tomorrow. I'll be checking frequently and will post here for sure as soon as something pops up.

While using the dual display fix... Whenever my cursor is over the icons on the dock, the specific icon where the cursor is, will disappear. Anybody experiencing this?

1. Try the monitor with a different computer, see if you can replicate the problem with another computer, DVI connection. That will allow you to narrow down whether the problem is the monitor, connectors, or cables.

2. Try a different monitor with your computer, same DVI connector, same port. If the problem shows up here, you know it's something with your video card, card connection, or circuitry connecting the card in your computer.

Hope this helps

Update

Quick update -- still running stock 2600 (completely replaced MP a few weeks ago due to freezing issue)...no problems on this one, but haven't pushed it at all because I expect it to freeze, thus below...

Ordered 8800 replacement form MacMall. Was told "March 5" as I mentioned in earlier post. Still on backorder as of today March 10. Oh well. Guess I have no choice but to wait. At least this 2600 isn't as flaky while I wait.

I haven't seen any updates to xlr8yourmac.com's claim of a software update of some kind coming for the 2600. Any news on that?

I'd been hoping to see something further on that topic, but no such luck.

I really don't mind using two monitors, but it sure would be nice to know the issue has been resolved.

I have the same problem with the freezes!

I don't think it is resonable that I should pay 200 dollars for a 8800 card, because Apple made a fault with the ATI 2600!

I use the "fake dual monitor fix", and for now it works for me. But I really ain't saticefied with it in the long run! I want Apple to fix this. I did'nt pay that much money, just to get a half working machine!

Any news on a update?

Best,
