It happened again today....
Stayed for a minute and then did go away. called Apple support and they told me it is not a HD issue and performed SMC & PRAM resets and assured this will fix the issue for good.
Did you perform any custom RAM upgrades after receiving your iMac?
Also, do you have any peripherals (that did not come with the iMac itself) connected to it?
If so, have you tried disconnecting all such peripherals, and removing any custom RAM, to see if it makes any difference at all?
Hold up, I thought adding compatible RAM was perfectly supportable?

No custom RAM added. I have 16 GB Ram purchased with the computer.
Added peripherals are:
- Logitic mouse
- HP inkjet printer
- A secondary Screen (ASUS) connected through an HDMI to Thunderbolt cable.
Could it be the external monitor or cable? I noticed during the 2 times this happened the external monitor was attached. never had it when it was disconnected.
It happened again today and stayed for half an hour. During this period even restarts didn't make it go away. Cleared out by itself later. Called apple support and they booked me an appointment with apple store on Sunday morning.
wish me luck ####
Half an hour? Tell me you tried to take a screenshot?
Mine came with RAM from Apple and have no external monitor. Again, hasn't happened since the one time.
