I don't have an iPhone 4 to compare it to, but my 4S has the same desktop picture as my iPad 2, and the photo is much warmer and yellower on the iPhone than the iPad. I guess I could complain about it, but honestly, I would rather have it be warmer than have a patch of dead pixels or bleeding backlight or dust specks or any of the other numerous annoyances that can pop up as variations in displays. It's always a crapshoot as to what you will get, and if there is no dust or dead pixels, I will just be happy that I got a nice display, even if it is on the warm side.

I was surprised how cool/blue my 4S is after hearing about others. I compared it to one other 4S that was much more warm/yellow. I also compared to my old 4, and the 4S was equally as cool/blue but even brighter at full brightness.

There will be a great variation of display temperature from iPhone to iPhone, and it honestly isn't that big of a deal. It's only really noticeable when you place it beside another one.

I think your right, after comparing both our 4S's mine seems more white and his more yellow.

Haha... I can't believe people are still complaining about a screen looking bad when wearing polarized SUNGLASSES. Take the glasses off you ********** idiots. They are made to block light and glare. get some contacts you nerds.

Um…some people have polarized prescription sunglasses; others wear polarized sunglasses while wearing contact lenses outdoors. The latter would be me; with my 3G I'd just turn up the brightness to make up for the polarization "dimming" the screen. I now love my 4S, but forget the sunglasses…it's like a very bad acid trip.

I like the 4S screen better, seems easy on my eyes.

Interesting, I find the opposite, I find the new screen harder to read, a little too much glare and contrast not as good.

One thing that I find odd, and my wife spotted it too (and she isn't known to notice things) is that some app names seem bigger on the 4S than the 4. They shouldn't, it's the same screen res, same OS but there are a few that appear bigger. We were wondering if it was a symptom of the different (poorer in my mind) contrast.

So is the brightness and color temp variation from unit to unit just normal variance from production batches, or is it due to the use of different display component suppliers (say, Samsung vs LG)?

My iPhone's Home button became flaky and stopped registering clicks half the time, so I paid Apple Store $150 for a replacement unit a couple of weeks ago. But whereas my original iPhone (and most of my family's iPhones) have whiter screens, my replacement has a warmer/yellower one that I don't like.

I don't suppose this is enough of a reason to ask Apple Store to swap this replacement with another? (BTW does anyone know if Apple's replacement phones are brand new or factory refurbished?)

P.S. My regret is that the Store employee had gone through two other replacement phones before giving me a 3rd one. Each time he'd tried to connect a replacement phone to a laptop to update iOS, it would fail and he would box that unit back up and get another box. By the 3rd unit he finally found that he was using a bad USB cable. So now I'm wondering if either of the two previous units that he'd tried might have a whiter screen :(
