My brand new BTO MacBook Pro that I bought last month was stolen from my Car. It was only in my car because I went to the mall straight after work too.

It was the top end 17" 2.6, 200GB 72k, w/4GB ram. I also lost my mighty mouse and apple bluetooth keyboard that was in the bag.

I have no home insurrance to cover the replacement so now I'm out $3700 on my credit card with nothing to show for it. Oh and my Visa has no theft protection on it.

What a great start to the weekend...

Sorry to hear about the theft!

I'd report this to the police and Apple. More than likely the thief will sell it ASAP so he/she will offer it and a buyer will ask for the S/N to check out. Eventually the computer will have some issue and the poor buyer will be found, but at least you may get your stuff back.

I filled a police report yesterday right after it happened and gave them the serial #. There is a good chance it will show up in a pawn shop somewhere...

I also called Apple and they marked the serial # as stolen. So if for some reason the person decides to keep it and call for support they will be screwed.

I don't want to be a pessimist but my blackbook was stolen from my car about six months ago. I gave the cops the serial and haven't heard a thing since. Just waiting for those updates for a new one...

That sucks. Did you tell Apple? It's pretty likely that whoever ended up with your machine would bring it into the Apple Store to get it fixed.

You can never be so safe, my laptop was also stolen from my car when I was on vacation in Italy.. I hope all those people die in hell, all my personal things where in the laptop case too

At work, we're told to take our laptops with us when we park. It is not a good idea to place your laptop in the trunk when you get to your destination as people may be watching and know what you're placing where. If you can't take it with you, put your laptop in the trunk prior to arriving at the destination. Of course, never leave it on a seat where it can be seen easily.

Unfortunately, unless crime happens you to, it is hard to believe that it can happen to you. Hope above common sense tips help someone.

It is. I had my car stereo system and everything else (speakers, subs, cds) stolen from my car at my house while I was home. Since then, I have lost my sense of security. It's hard to even trust people after something like this happens.

Maybe the mall security camera's caught something on tape. I really, really hope this works out for you man.

People: Never leave your computer un-attended in a public space. Some people are so wicked, they will follow you, and all you need is 30 seconds of forgetfullness and it can be long gone. I hope the (you know what) gets what is coming to him.

Did you purchase your MBP with a credit card that offers purchase protection? That might help with some of the cost. A few of my cards do that for free...

just incase anyone was wondering, statefarm offers insurance for pretty much everything.

I got my 2.5 rev 3 MBP insured for about 55 dollars a year.

My god, why wouldn't you do this? $55/ year is 15 cents a day to keep you from losing $2500-$3000? That's essentially free.

The only way someone would be able to steal my laptop is if they boinked me on the head and pried it from my hands. Aside from insurance, the best way to protect your machine is NEVER let it out of your sight for even a second. If I stop at the mall, I have to carry my machine with me AT ALL TIMES. Better yet, I don't take it with me unless I foresee needing it. Any electronics that I carry that has a high value, I think of as an oxygen bottle and I'll die if it's not in my immediate grasp at all times. If you're the type of person who's not willing keep an eye on your stuff 100% of the time, then you should leave it home.. certainly not in your car. Of course, this advice won't help the person who has already lost their laptop... but it might help someone else.

man that sucks. i hate thieves, it's a shame more thieves don't steal from each other so they can get a taste of what it's like. i guess that type of person tho wouldn't care too much if their stolen junk got stolen again.

I'm sorry for you, that sucks.

What is the name of the software that can allows a remote control of the webcam ?

A couple of years ago, I had my work van broken into and had my generic cheapo 20gb mp3 player stolen from the front seat where I accidentally left it sitting.

Since I needed a new mp3 player and I had some extra spare cash, I decided to see what all the fuss was about these 'iPod' thingies. I bought myself a black 80gb 5th gen iPod and from the second I switched it on I was in love with the thing.

I had never witnessed the Apple style before and couldn't believe how lovely and polished a simple music player could be. Since buying this device I have become a complete Apple nut and have since bought...

160gb iPod Classic
2 iPhones (original and 3G)
2 iPod nanos and an iPod mini for relatives
an iBook G4 for my wife
a MacBook Pro 2.2Ghz
a 1.66Ghx Mac Mini
a 1.83Ghz MacBook
countless older ipods and some old G3 iMacs as restoration projects

The point of all this is to point out that this one terrible event caused me to completely change the way I look at electronics and computing. I was a complete Windows devotee ever since the 3.0 days, now I don't have a single Windows machine left in my house. Were it not for getting my cheapo mp3 player stolen I might never have discovered the world of Apple.

This doesnt do much now buy heres a suggestion:

I have $30k worth of photography gear insured for $120 a year against drops/theft/terrorism/and fire. I just used the same company my car insurance is through to get that.

Also, there was an article a few months back with some software where you held in a button combination when starting your computer, if you didnt it logged in a dummy account and started snapping pictures and "phoning home" anyone know of the name of the software?

You have every right to be pissed at what happened; I'm awfully sorry to learn of it, and I can understand your rage at the sheer hateful injustice of it all. Some years ago, I was robbed - credit card, debit card had to be cancelled, airline tickets changed (they weren't stolen, but I had been due to fly out on a business trip the following day) all kinds of personal stuff, blood group card, etc. all taken. Fortunately, I was able to cancel the cards in time - some took ages to be replaced - and the robbers only got away with the contents of my wallet. My European liberal instincts fled, as I wished Hell's foulest torments on the ill-begotten thieves, and still do, the sense of violation is very strong. A rotten thing to happen, you have my full and deep sympathy. Cheers.

As some here have mentioned, keep small expensive things in your hands. If it's easy enough for someone else to walk off with it, you should walk off with it yourself. There are no neighborhoods where crime doesn't take place. 30+ years ago, in a very nice neighborhood where i grew up, someone got into my mom's car (that was parked up away from the street), used the garage door opener to get into the garage and took everything of value. That's in an upscale town in the 70's, where "no crime took place".

Even playing it smart, things will get stolen. Insurance is a good move, and then there are tools like this:

I bought a family license and put it on all our Macs.

why is not covered under your auto ins. ? if it was in your car it should be covered under that provided you have full coverage that is.
