in a way i hear you.. but don't you at least think there's something to be said for raising awareness?
I hear you - public awareness is important and I too believe many of the things Bono has done have made a positive impact. I suppose it is more about the manner of how he does. I don't think it used to be so bad but in recent years he just seems to be... almost smug about it. It's still better than not doing anything, I agree. At times it is painful to watch though. On the list I would say that Bono, the Gates and Lance are the most deserving to be on the list. What happened to the rest of it though?

yeah, i understand. in a way i was more put off by his faux rock star act during the zooropa time period though.. then again i was probably too young to understand the satire of it.

i don't know. he just comes off as more genuine than most to me. maybe i'm not a great judge of character. hah

i think mother nature makes some sense, but the ballot should at least be renamed. person of the year just doesn't work.

I'll vote for Mother Nature even-though I already voted for Mr. Jobs himself

And I, whatever number we are on, 'th the Bono statements. I personally can't really take someone seriously when the wear sunglasses indoors or at night unless they actually have a medical condition.

PS: for all those people who are ranting about JK..be quiet. that woman has single handedly made millions of children all around the world enjoy reading again!!

Yes, but she did that years ago. That's not new, nor did the number of child readers of HP skyrocket in 2005.

"Man" of the year in 2005? I don't think so.

I really think Mother Nature deserves to be there - considering all the major events that have impacted the world over the last year - more so than Harry Potter....

Bleh,

D

Agreed. Mother Nature should win, as ridiculous as that sounds.

That, or Google. Look at all they've done this year.

I don't think it's that good a list to be honest. I've been peeking through the list of previous winners, and this year's crop isn't anywhere near the calibre of most of the previous winners. Get the full list at Wikipedia but for example's sake here's the last ten:

1995: Newt Gingrich (1943– )
1996: David Ho (1952– )
1997: Andy Grove (1936– )
1998: Bill Clinton (1946– ) (2nd time) and Kenneth Starr (1946– )
1999: Jeffrey P. Bezos (1964– )
2000: George W. Bush (1946– )
2001: Rudolph Giuliani (1944– )
2002: The whistleblowers: Cynthia Cooper of Worldcom (????– ), Sherron Watkins of Enron (1959– ), and Coleen Rowley of the FBI (1954– )
2003: The American Soldier
2004: George W. Bush (1946– ) (2nd time)

I would have given more credence to the anti-poverty idea were it Bob Geldof and not Bono up there. If it's to praise someone/something for what they're doing, my vote would have to go to the Gates'. As others have said though, unquestionably these twelve months have been those of the natural disaster, as evidenced in SE Asia, Kashmir, and New Orleans among others.

Mother Nature it must be.

(And on a controversial note, anyone who even thinks of voting for Steve Jobs really needs to read news from somewhere other than the Mac Web once in a while. IMHO etc.)

Ya but that was years ago, i doubt many new people are starting the harry potter books but just finishing them!
