I always hold the phone with my left hand in a position that is the worst possible for this issue. Even without using a case I have not had one dropped call or degraded voice quality. I would say if your not looking for the problem you probably won't even notice.

I agree.

I too hold a phone with my left hand, and would never have noticed the signal issue in my area if it weren't for the you-tubes, headlines, and the net forums.

Let's take a look at the timeline:

1. Apple stores open 07:00 Thursday.

2. I had the phone operational by 09:00 Thursday.

3. Late Thursday and Friday there are MR threads for signal loss.

4. Friday, after reading the threads, I was able to replicate the problem if I removed the case.

5. Saturday and Sunday there are complaints because a fix hasn't come out yet.

6. It's now Sunday, so far no dropped calls on my phone--although I'm sure I could force them to drop based on #4.

Based on the timeline it's probably sometime Friday when Apple realizes that there are a non-trivial number of serious, and some not so serious, customer complaints. They now have to verify the reports, check the manufacturing to insure that the slave labour er, Foxconn employees did what they were supposed to do (put the non-conductive coating on), check the software--which is a version 0 and likely has more bugs than an ant farm, and come up with a fix that will satisfy the majority of customers (some would not be satisfied if they threw in all the gold in Ft. Knox as a bonus).

IMHO, if they come up with something Monday or Tuesday they will be heros, Wednesday through Friday will be above average, the week after average, and anything later it will be time to seriously consider alternatives.

FWIW, the biggest problem with my iPhone 4 is that you can't lock the position of the screen when reading books--or at least I haven't figured out how to do it.

I upgraded to the iPhone 4 from my aging 3G and I have to say, the upgrade was WELL worth it. The iPhone 4 trumps the 3G in every way possible and I couldn't be happier with it...although I DO get the reception issue, it hasn't really been an inconvenience when I'm actually making a call or using data

If you're not buying it until August anyway, then you don't need to decide in June whether to buy it. We'll all have a better sense later of the scope of any issues, how widespread they are, and what Apple is doing or not doing to fix it.

No issues here for me, but I haven't been posting about it or voting in polls.

There is a screen lock now. Double click home, swipe to the right, and you will see the icon there.

If perfection were possible in a electronic device my iPhone 4 would be it.

Hope that answers your question.

I am/was (not to sure anymore) planning to upgrade my 3GS to iPhone 4 this august. Not by choice; this is just when my contract is eligible for
an upgrade.
However there seems to be an aweful lot of problems with the iPhone 4; from
the signal dissapearing by bridging the gap (seriously why isn't it covered in some kind of concealer?
To the yellow blotch issues and the screen being about 100000x less resistant to damage then Steve would of had us believe.
There's also cases of the iPhone moving my itself when on a very slight slope. Not like sliding down due to gravity but actually moving. People are speculating it may be the gyro doing this.

How likely do you think it is that apple will sort any of these problems in the next couple if months?

Anyone here not had any problems with their phone? (please no apple fanbois that would say their phone was perfect even if it was a pile of smashed class and broke plastic.

I don't have the yellow screen problem but I do have the reception problem if I hold my phone the way Apple has shown people holding it for the past three years. IF I hold it that way, I can't make a single call or access the net.

Strange how after three years of owning iPhones, I have to get used to holding it a different way.

Thanks! But it only seems to lock in portrait mode and I wanted it locked in landscape for reading.

I love my iphone 4 so does my girlfriend.. we both have them and have NO problems.. no signal loss or anything..:apple:

That's rather hypocritical of you to quote "slave labour" as though you disagree with it. If you disagree with it, don't buy Apple products. Since you bought an iPhone 4, you contribute to problem.

HD video.
Great portable photo camera.
Fast app switching - 512MB.
Great accessibility features.
Spectacular hi resolution screen.
Facetime capability.
Front video camera.

Same network.

Same lot of complainers, whiners that when actual quality defects occur they just complaint in an online forum and don't do their dues to make a formal warranty claim.

Only you will know what you are missing if you indeed want to miss it.

Perhaps, but since all similar cellphones are made in those kind of countries, Apple is no worse than any other.

If you believe such a poll that can be voted on by any android user coming here to troll is accurate, then I won't even waste another post trying to explain how the poll is irrelevant because you won't comprehend it.

That poll is filled with people who actually hate apple and most likely voted just to jump on the bandwagon. Now some people do have issues but alot of people don't.

And Mac Rumors do not have every single iPhone 4 user in the world in this board. So pretty much there are more people in this country that have an iPhone and yet people act like every mac/iPhone user is on this board.

This board is pretty biased and to get a real indication of how many iPhone users out of the millions sold who may or may not have this issue. You would have to go outside of this board.

This place is not the oracle of delphi when it comes to these issues and people don't seem to get that.

Life must be nice when you have blinders on or when you hate something so much you can't see the truth from fiction

It’s tiring to see people try to use that “poll" for more than it is. I’ve tried to explain how this poll proves next to nothing, but it still keeps getting thrown out there as meaning something. I give up.

As far as the problems with the iPhone go and postings on Macrumors, one has to realize these are forums, and you’re going to get the most negative responses on here when something may be wrong. Obviously, there are issues, but plenty of people don’t have issues, and for those that do, I’m sure Apple will fix this, especially since it’s got so much media attention. Anyway, don’t let these forums be your sole justification for your decision process.

Same with clothing. Most of the major brands come from these countries. All of us own things that were most likely made by child labor or people working for extremely low wages. Doesn't stop me from shopping at the Gap or Apple.

At this point everyone is looking for problems. Things are getting blown out of proportion.

There are a lot of us having no problems at all...

Yup pardner, welcome to "competitive complaining" season. It's a sport 'round these 'ere parts. 'Specially 'round product launch time, when all the young drifters ride into town and shoot the place up.

They'll be out'a here soon, and the decent townsfolk'll be back. You'll see.

I have an iPhone 4 and have been using it very heavily since one day before launch date (lucky pre-orderer).

Reception
I live in an area with good-to-passable AT&T reception (mostly okay on the outside, crappy on my iPhone 3G whenever I'm inside school buildings). Although I can reproduce the dropped-signal 'bug' when I hold my iPhone tightly, I hadn't even noticed it before reading about it. The truth is, even when I have my hand covering the antenna, I don't hold it tightly enough for the connection to drop, and I really doubt anyone would. To me, based on my experience for a week, the issue seems a bit artificial and in no way affects my ability to place calls. In fact, I've been extremely happy to notice that the reception improves in most places (I can now use my cell phone on more than 75% of the campus buildings).

Build quality
I haven't dropped the cell phone, and have been using it bumper-less and screen-less just to test what's up with the signal. My cell phone of course remains in pristine condition, with no scratching at all.

Of course, I have no way to judge how sturdy it is, but I do hope you will understand the bias involved in reporting these types of news. Think about it, who is more likely to come to a forum and report their phone status? Someone who has a scratch or someone that doesn't? Do you expect to see threads saying "Hey man, I have been using this for 5 days and no scratches :D" I don't think so, even though I'd expect the majority to fall in this category.

Also, a number of media outlets have been doing stress testing on the iPhone to see just how much it can resist. At some point, it will break, that's for sure. I'm willing to take the videos I've seen as positive news, since I'm happy enough to see the phone flying a meter 3-4 times before breaking. It's not a rubber ball, but it's also not a glass vase. You really have to ask to yourself how its resistance compares to the previous iPhones, and I don't think the videos yet address that.

Overall experience
I cannot be happier with my phone. My girlfriend is a huge Apple hater, and she told me yesterday: "You know what? I think this phone is actually really cool." The quality of the screen, of the camera, and of some apps like iMovie simply make this phone worth every cent I paid for it. I highly recommend it.

Of course, I cannot say how it compares to the Evo, Incredible, and any number of phones out there. I've seen most of these, but haven't played with them for any number of days such that I'd feel comfortable deriving meaningful comparisons.

Take my advice for what it's worth. Of course, feel free to PM if I can help you in any way :) Good luck cell phone shopping.

Speculating that the gyro could cause movement!! Wow, ignorance has really gone wild. The iPhone gyro is solid state!! It has no moving parts at all. There is no way to jam a mechanical gyro into an iPhone. Forget it. Amazing the paranoia that pops up.

I remember last year, there was a MacRumors member that took his 3GS back 6-7 times because the pixels didn't quite looks right, or the home button ever so slightly wiggled or for a number of other reasons. Just enjoy your phone, and if you have major issues, take it back.

I remember last year, there was a MacRumors member that took his 3GS back 6-7 times because the pixels didn't quite looks right ...

Oh yeah, I remember those "stuck-pixel" fulminations.

Hopefully not again - since the new pixels are too small to see. :)

I forget that guy's name, but he was incredibly OCD. He apparently jailbroke his phone, because a png of the OS didn't look right, so he made his own, then emailed Steve Jobs about it, demanding a fix...didn't get a response. I mean, come on! I have better things to do than nitpick over a damned phone.

So it's ignorant to insist that people are not having problems? But yet it's not ignorant to insist that it's every single iPhone sold that's having the issue? Your logic is pretty fuzzy.

You really think that every iPhone user exists on this board and that if someone is not having an issue that they are lying? Well your wrong

Huh - what? What kind of strawman argument is that? Where did I say anything about people NOT having issues. Did you read my post? Did you read the post I was replying to? Clearly not.

Wow.. just wow. Please go back and re-read. Else I think your reading comprehension skills need work.

how does a "no moving parts" gyroscope work?
