There is an agreement where you do not sign a contract if you provide your own phone. The only thing is that many of the sales people at the store simply don't know about it or won't tell you the truth. The next time you go back, speak with a manager or call customer service.

I agree, the contracts are usually so they can recoup the costs of the subsidized phones. if you own your own phone there is no reason you should be required to sign a contract.

I think the OP is saying is that he brought in an unsubsidized 1st gen iPhone that was unlocked.

Yes, to sign up for AT&T, you had to sign a 2 year cotract, even though the 1st gen iPhone was not subsidized. It is part of AT&T's exclusive handset contract with Apple.

That's why most the people that bought the 1st gen iPhone were able to get the 3G one subsidized since AT&T didn't help pay for the first one to begin with.

Try this:

Remove your T-Mobile sim, and insert the one that came with your iPhone.

Plug the phone into iTunes, and tell it that you want to activate.

When it asks for a social security number, enter "999-99-9999."

You will fail the credit check, and should be offered a Pay-As-You-Go plan.

And there you go... No contract.

a spicy story of ***** at&t

ok so u want a more interesting answer, here it is, i was on olddddddddddd 4 years plan with lots of mins early nites n weekends and unlimited text for just 39.99, in NOV someone by mistake took it off and wouldnt give me plan back or simply upgrade it to new one, so i made them send me 6 phones for free, allllllll tech savvy worth more than 1400 on ebay, for signing up 2 yr contract with family plan, thats my funda, if they r going to lock me in 2 yr contract, i would make sure i get out of them atleast 1 year worth of bill money thru phones, i would suggest you do same, make 2 yr contract, get phone/ ( phones in UNethical way, but hey we all know how ethical at&t itself is) and sell phone on ebay to pay off a few months bill, I would suggest you to go with a mediamax for 15$ with phone like eternity ( free on wirefly, would get sold for 400 on ebay) you can use sim and unlimited inet on your iphone (if you would buy iphone plan same internet costs you 30$), so GOOD LUCK and let us know how it goes. oh everyone out there complaining bout att, you have to make them give you what you want, they are there to screw you no matter what.

go with a mediamax for 15$ with phone like eternity ( free on wirefly,"

whats mediamax?and wirefly?

sounds like a great idea seen it getting 350...and this phone is free?looks like a good phone

the problem here lies with the fact that all iPhone service comes with a contract since technically there is no way to have an iPhone in a "bring your own equipment" scenario since all of them are still technically under one contract or another. so to the OP you are pretty much stuck, either sign up for a contract to use an iPhone on ATT or keep it unlocked on TMobile

sorry i didnt feel like reading all the post so idk if someone said this...

def do not have to sign a 2yr contract... you WILL have to sign a 30 day contract, but u have a 30 day return policy. so its basically no contract.

that rep is either trying to get paid for the 2yr contract, or they just simply dont know.

EDIT: oh yea so my sugestion.....

call cust service, 18003310500, say u have an att phone a friend gave u, u want them to activate a random number on no contract since u have ur own equipment... once u recieve the sim card and make sure its activated, call the porting dept to bring your number over, 18888987685.

The issue is that with all AT&T you have to sign a contract disregarding whether or not you already have a phone. It doesn't make sense, but they're playing it like Apple—Take it or leave it.

so u sign multiple 2yr contracts and they helped u out with phones. selling them then using ur existing phones for 2yrs unless u buy at retail eventually and just staying locked into the agreements??

whatever floats your boat
