Went over my data plan by 5mb and AT&T never warned me!!

So 2 days left of the month, i went over my 200MB plan, psh

i had a whole 40 MB left, but got lost coming back from vacation and was using google maps (very useful) but apparently it set be over 5MB and AT&T didn't let me know till the next morning when i was in bed.

THey never sent me the text saying i hit 90% and before they sent the over 100% text i turned of Wireless data on my iphone.

I call them up today, and all she said she could do is charge be for the individual MB, so 10$ for the 5MB i used... so i'm still paying an extra $10

I mean they wouldn't even budge...

Who's in the wrong here... i thought i had a case becuase they never sent me the warning text saying i'm getting close to my limit.

UPDATE: Everyone is telling me to monitor my usage and i do, i checked the At&t app when i was in the car and i had 40mb left, i understand everyones reasoning, but don't tell me to monitor my data usage better, i even turned of my data usage after finding directions... the only other thing i could have done was not use my phone at all... i thought 40mb we enough to get some directions, apparently i was wrong

do you use the att account app?
 
I received a notification when I was at 50% of my 2GB plan. One thing you have to realize is network data isn't updated instantly. So even if you would have gotten a text, it would have been the next day either way. They should credit your account especially if this was your first bill!
 
Your an adult (I'm assuming). They don't remind you of things. That isn't their job. You have to be responsible enough to check your data how you see fit. They give you access to check it. So use it.
 
None of the new plans on AT&T or VZW are any good. But if that's what you signed up for then you gotta pay when you go over. Just like txts or min.

It's your responsibility to keep up with your account. AT&T isn't your babysitter.
 
That's why you should have gotten the unlimited plan, you never need to worry about limits.

haha, for the $10 he is paying for overage he could have just upgrade to 2 gigs.
 
I agree that is pretty crappy. But I also agree with those saying that, as crappy as it is, you should monitor it, especially when you said you knew how close you were. Sorry, bud.

I could be wrong, but they are not "suppose" to warm you about it, it is the user responsibility to track their usage. Don't get me wrong It would be very nice but so it will be to be able to use my "already" exiting data for tethering without an additional $20 "cool fee"

Also, system doesn't update in real time, all those courtesy email and text people get are usually generate when the system update, which it is usually somewhere at 2AM (for some reason), so you would have gotten a text maybe the next day.

Am I reading that right? Is for that people with monthly plans, pay as you go plans or both? Because if you upgrade your line to an iPhone 4 with AT&T, you are grandfathered into the unlimited data plan and get to keep it. Which sounds a hell of a lot better then UK carries forcing you to lose it unlimited if you upgrade to the iPhone 4.

Yup.

I had an unlimited plan with my Android phone before I got an iPhone 4, but now I'm getting 750MB a month.
 
Last time I checked ATT doesnt warn you if you're about to go over your minutes or use more SMS messages then your plan allows.

HELLO. They want you to go over. Last time I checked they are in business to gererate a return..

Wow? I thought O2 had unlimited data when I checked a couple weeks ago... I now went to their website and it's all changed to non-unlimited... What's the deal?? Did they just switch this policy?

Heh that's good that they restrict your speed for the rest of the month. Also, Europe has a pretty great 50 Euro limit on data roaming charges.. No more $50k bill when traveling overseas.

Unfortunately, this kind of consumer protection will of course be branded as socialism/"nanny state" in America :eek:

According to AT&T they send you text messages when you hit 65%, 90%, and 100%. I would hope these arrive shortly after you hit the threshold.

I'm planning on getting the 200mb plan, because that should be all I need. But I don't want to randomly go over without expecting it.
 
So while your driving and using google maps you want them to stop your data usage and make you go through the whole process of upgrading to the 2GB plan then resume your trip. If that were the case I think this thread would be labeled quite differently. Something like, " had to pull over, upgrade my plan before I could continue my trip :mad:". It is just not feasible for AT&T or any cell provider to allocate the resources to monitor everyones data usage in real time. They do a fine job at it and you yourself said that you knew you where getting close, if you thought that you had the chance to go over and didn't want to pay a extra fee you shouldn't have used data. Simple as that, if you didn't know that you don't get charged by the mb for overages only charged $10 for each GB over your plan, IMO you should start reading what you are signing. It's all there in print. I have no issue with the new data plans. Most don't exceed 2GB per month and those that do pay extra. That's fair. I use upwards of 3GB per month and it cost me $5 more dollars than a unlimited plan. Those that don't pay $5 less or $15 dollars less depending on usage that month and your plan. You probably won't use over 200mb next month, that's your usage average, but the one time you did it cost you $10 dollars extra and saved you time and was there when you needed it. It would have cost you far more in time and money to stop, find a gas station, buy a map, find where you were at and plan a route to your destination. $10 for the connivance isn't that bad in the scheme of things.

But these carriers data calculation is probably not updated every minute of the day. So he might be getting the notice late....

But i'm surprised he didn't get the 65% notification. Or maybe he did? I'm not sure
