Wow? I thought O2 had unlimited data when I checked a couple weeks ago... I now went to their website and it's all changed to non-unlimited... What's the deal?? Did they just switch this policy?

They announced the plans at the beginning of June and they took effect on June 24th - anyone buying an iPhone 4 would be signed up to the new tariffs.

If you don't get a new phone, you can keep the unlimited plan. They haven't actually implemented the limits yet though (I don't think they have the billing systems in place) - they will be doing that in October. Until then it's Unlimited.

Heh that's good that they restrict your speed for the rest of the month. Also, Europe has a pretty great 50 Euro limit on data roaming charges.. No more $50k bill when traveling overseas.

It is a good limit. It's also free to receive text messages anywhere in the EU now.

Unfortunately, this kind of consumer protection will of course be branded as socialism/"nanny state" in America

Probably!

Funny, after the AT&T store employee screwed up my plan (not my fault), I easily got a full refund.

I clearly said I wanted my exact account cloned over with my new iPhone 4, and somehow my unlimited texting plan didn't get reinstated. I had ~$50 overage charge, but I called up customer service and they waived it instantly.

wow i got alot of responses, no but i do use the AT&T app, and i litterly got on it in the car and checked an it showed i had 40 mb left, we were lost, i took out my iphone used it for 10 minutes to get on track, and then turned my data usage off.

I understand that its my responsibility, but i did 99% of the things to keep it under my 200mb, the only other thing i could have done that i didn't do is not use my phone at all...

According to AT&T they send you text messages when you hit 65%, 90%, and 100%. I would hope these arrive shortly after you hit the threshold.

I'm planning on getting the 200mb plan, because that should be all I need. But I don't want to randomly go over without expecting it.

They don't, they show up atleast 12 hours later as i have learned.

And again Everyone, sure its probably still my fault. But i did everything possible to monitor my data, and even then turned it off when i was does using it

I call them up today, and all she said she could do is charge be for the individual MB, so 10$ for the 5MB i used... so i'm still paying an extra $10

Nope. See below

http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/02/...-changes-to-data-plans-iphone-tethering-comi/

AT&T's new overage system is arguably the game changer: on the $15 plan, you'll pay $15 for each additional 200MB, but on the $25 plan, you'll pay $10 for each additional GB. It's simple and straightforward -- but most importantly, it won't bankrupt you if you go over by a gig or three in a month. This compares to $50 per gigabyte of overage on AT&T's 5GB DataConnect plan for laptops.

Well OP, you should monitor your usage.... sucks doesn't it? Oh, BTW, AT&T isn't a babysitter.

Don't tell me to monitor my usage better, becuase i checked the at&t app several times that day. i understand people saying it my fauilt, but its not becuase i don't monitor my data enough

And of course AT&T isn't anyones babysitter, but i tried my best to stay under my 200mb while still using the phone. And yea i'm frusterated as anyone would be and i tried to get it credited back, hell i got 5$ taken off, thats something atleast

Like THEY don't have POLITICS in other countries???

...AND frequently, THEIR politics result in massive bloodshed; military coups; civil war...

It's more the fact that Americans always try to inject politics into forum posts that have absolutely nothing to do with the point of the thread.

AT&T does warn you that the data shown on their system is an approximate and doesn't account for the day's usage. So yes, it's your fault for not being an informed consumer and it's also your lack of checking your mobile usage.

Don't sugar coat it.

I'm also on the 200 MB plan (with my wife), and even though we haven't gone over yet, I feel your pain. Last weekend we were away and had less access to wifi until we got back home on Monday night. Our new billing cycle started on Tuesday, and for whatever reason, AT&T decided to store up just about all the usage my wife did over that weekend (10 MB), and put it on the new cycle (Tuesday at 4:30 am). She had about 100 MB left on the previous cycle, so I feel like we were cheated.

I may save myself some headache and put her plan up to the 2 GB plan at some point. AT&T's bookkeeping on her phone is confusing as all hell. I can't tell from the account page (on the web) what app or web sites may be causing the spikes in usage I see every few days (I think it's those damn Facebook photos that people post). We didn't go over yet, but only going through one full cycle, I still don't have enough history to get a full grasp of how bad this can get, especially if we go away somewhere without wifi for a week or something.

So you got more data for $10.

Do you think you would have just winged it without data when you were lost or you think you would have decided the $10 was worth it at the time?

Get the 2GB plan.

You went over your data. You chose the cheap plan. You weren't watching your data. Get over it

Exactly.

10 minutes = 600 seconds

All you need is 67K/s download for 600 seconds to reach 40MB.

Maybe so but foreigners usually inject "observations" about Americans in most threads such as Americans are lawsuit happy, or fat, or sheeps, or ignorant, or don't have passports, or are uncultured, and on and on.

With the exception of sheeps and uncultured (I don't like calling people uncultured), many of those allegations are true in some parts of this country... unfortunately. To generalize the whole country is bad but I can safely say that many many of them applied in some regions...

With a discount it's only $5 a month more for 2GB, might as well play it safe...

The OP was obviously watching his/her data like a hawk. They still went over.

So what is more likely the problem here?

1. The OP was ignorant of their usage?

2. AT&T is failing to provide their tiered data users with adequate UP TO THE MINUTE UP TO THE Kb usage tracking?

All the AT&T apologists in these boards make me sick.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if we find out soon that iPhones are incapable of using less than 200mb a month. (when powered on in a cell network for a full month)

The only thing I have to say to the OP is that I am sorry that happened to you and you are not being given the level of service you should expect from a top tier wireless company.

Never forget that you are AT&T's customer and they should strive to give you better service. They should bend over backwards to make you happy.

My only other suggestion would be to bump up to the 2gb rape plan so that you can a least have a slight piece of mind and be able to enjoy more of the great features of these exclusive phones without feeling the need to constantly check at&t's COMPLETELY useless data usage tracking.

Just idiling on the network?

no

but as far as data goes then yes. easily.

the theoretical max transfer for the iPhone 4 on ATT's network is 7.2 Mbps. My personal best is like 5.6 Mbps I think which according to google is 0.7 MBps.

So if a user is downloading free apps, streaming youtube videos or browsing lots of *full* webpages (not just wap), they could easily run into the cap. Don't forget OP mentioned google map usage which streams real time.
