You joke, but it actually happens with each new release. Some feature is eliminated. Since I bought my first Intel iMac 5+ years ago we lost:

1. 20" model went from IPS to TN.
2. Antiglare displays
3. Sleep light
4. Remote control
5. Ability to generate composite video out
6. A firewire port (there were two)
7. Software - Front Row, Omni Outliner, Comic Life, Big Bang Board Games, iWeb, iDVD.
8. Install DVD.
9. "Full Size" wireless keyboard. You have to get the wired keyboard to have the numeric keypad. We also lost the Mighty Mouse, but good riddance to that!

Do you remember when macs used to come with Quick Books?

I actually went out and bought an iMac yesterday. I'll probably kick myself later when I realize that the upgrade is sooo much better.
But as others have mentioned on this forum, there will always be new technology and I'm happy with the i7 I bought... (for now....:p)

Waiting,

I'm still using a 2008 Unibody MacBook to run my business. I'm finally in the position that the business can afford to upgrade my system. If it was November I'd buy now, but with Mountain Lion and Ivy bridge due this summer, I think waiting makes more sense. My rule of thumb is, if a release cycle is generally known I buy in the first half or I wait till the beginning of the next.

Personally I'm looking at the Core i7 with the SSD and 1TB drive and the extra video RAM. I just hope its more like early July and less like September.

While I'm not all that concerned with WiFi on the iMac, I'm not going to buy another laptop or Airport until Apple rolls out support for 802.11ac

The OS itself isn't a terribly good reason to wait, given that Apple OS upgrades cost $20-30.

Agree which is the biggest advantage apple have over Microsoft. However if you wait for the 2012 model to come out presumably you can upgrade to Asian Lion (or whatever it will be called) in a few years time. If I buy now I'll be happy for a few weeks but when the new one comes out I will wish I'd waited.

To wait or not to wait...that is the question. Wether it tis nobler to buy an Imac now and risk missing out on the cool new features of the next update or to hold off purchasing until it is released. :)

My G5 imac officially died this year. Yes thats right, i said G5 lol. It served me well...but it has gone to that big iCloud in the sky.

I sure could use a new one to work on creative projects....but don't mind waiting a few months till the new Imacs are released. I have a feeling based on rumors, Apple's past history of releasing new Imacs in the Spring/Summer, and my own gut feeling.

I think Apple will update the iMac line between May and July. I could be wrong...but thats my plan, so I'm stickin' to it. Good luck. :)

I have been heavily using a Macbook Pro 15" since 2007 that means 5 years old, got a monitor issue (dead pixels) but it's still run fine. It's time for an upgrade, assuming Apple will launch the new redesign MBP and iMac sooner...

Come on or I'll be pooterless

Funnily enough I'm on a G5 too ... But mine hasn't completely imploded yet ... But I have to kick start it every morning ... And every time anything upgrades to the latest version something else doesn't work
Had got the money for a new iMac 6 months ago but as it was past the usual half way mark to an upgrade so decided to wait
Can't wait for my new Mac... But there's no way in hell I'd buy one till the upgrade now ... It would be senseless ... Even if the G5 blows up I'd just borrow someone else's old machine in the meantime
Come on Apple ... Pull your finger out ... You can't pull off this high fashion, must have, act without having a new model each season ... Or at least every year ... Your slipping guys

It would be interesting if Apple did something with Mac OS upgrades, similar to iOS. Free upgrades for the life of the product. I know it won't happen but it would be interesting if buying 3 year AppleCare would include 3 years of software updates. The plan could be tied to the Mac's serial # just like the warranty.

Thinking Different.

honestly, i think free os x upgrades are very probable. maybe not already this year, but soon

I agree/wish but it would be one more advantage over MS, but also bc they are now planing a new Mac OS release every year, coinciding with a new iOS release. The 2-3 year subscription plan sounds good, albeit with AppleCare

Wait.

Tech is best served hot.

Best advice (for Joe Average) is to buy when you need it and not before. Usually the idea of the latest is mostly what excites.

Real satisfaction comes from having some discipline, sticking out a few generations and then upgrading; noticeable vs incremental.

The New IMAC is already here according to Apple

Does anyone else find it disturbing that the Apple Store website STILL depicts the IMAC as "The New IMAC" even though it's been out for over a year now and we are anticipating a new model within the next few weeks!

For a company that is usually on the cutting edge, their website sure lags.

Standard M.O. for Apple. Every product is "The new Thingy [Pro|Air|]" until the day its replacement comes out. They've actually gotten in trouble in some countries for that.

plus i think the release of mountain lion already is not a 1 year release cycle of the os i think its cause of how horrible problems people have had with lion

I'm going to be new to Mac's as well.

If Apple releases the new Mac's, is it for sure it's going to be released on the same it's announced or are they going to release a date for it or pre-orders?

I came back out empty-handed. I don't wan to wait but it's quite risky to get an iMac now and suddenly next week the new iMac with Ivy Bridges launches.

I could use a new desktop right away, but I guess I don't "need" it as a necessity for now.

I am a new Mac user, I just decided to jump from PC to Mac. I thought about building a PC again, but it's a big hassle. I am very excited to get my hands on Mac.

If you were me, you would choose to wait too right?

What is the most popular consensus on its release date? Is it going to wait for the Mountain Lion OS? Or it will just release before the launch of Mountain Lion?
I heard Ivy Bridge is coming out in the late-April. Would iMac come right after or it should be before?

It really isn't that hard to build, and put together a PC :D

You're right to be honest. :L
