Drove down to the local Apple store (what a zoo) and picked up a SIM free XR 128 GB in blue. XS too small, XS Max too $$ for the delta in features, for me... YMMV. I will probably put the $400 savings (vs the 256 GB XS Max which is closest equivalent) towards another XR for my girlfriend for Christmas... if I can convince her to to try an iPhone. Looking forward to the increased screen size vs my 6S and to the long lived battery which will be great for traveling.

Need to pick a case... something minimal and maybe clear. And need to pick a service since my 6S is a work phone and I gave up my personal phone (and bill) many years ago. Looking at the VZ $55 5GB plan (about what I use without being careful to do all app updates via wifi), the VZ basic Go_Unlimited plan with veteran's discount, or the T-Mobile $50 unlimited senior plan. Not sure about T-Mobile coverage although they are supposed to be really building out... or is that just hype?

There’s AT&T prepaid plan for $40 with autopay for unlimited talk and 8GB LTE w/ hotspot. They also have unlimited LTE promo for $45, but throttled. You can also save on tax and e911 fees by buying airtime cards from Callingmart for additional 5-10% off and no tax.

VZ also has a $40 8GB prepaid plan. I asked the agent what was the catch and she said that coverage might not be the same as the regular VZ network. I am really leery of prepay.

Actually $45, but close enough. Prepaids usually don’t allow roaming on other networks. I’ve been on prepaid plans since iPhone 4 cause post-paid plans are ripoffs. Seems Verizon prepaid tethering speed is capped @ 600 kbps, which is ridiculous.

Looked at the Xr, went with the Xs because its dual-lens camera doesn't use pinch-zoom to frame a shot (same with the 7+ & 8+). Would have stayed with my 7+ but I dislike the size.

Its a great phone

I couldn't get over the bezels but its probably the best value for an iPhone...latest tech and pretty much all the bells and whistles you need, incredible camera, long lasting battery, cheaper than higher end devices, still feels premium

but those bezels!!! haha noticeably thicker than the X/XS, and thicker than older "forehead and chin" iPhones on the sides!

I had both AT&T and Verizon on prepaid for a few months. In my experience AT&T prepaid had way better speeds than Verizon prepaid. Though Verizon coverage was better in the mountains.

That said most of the time at work I had less than 1MBPS on Verizon prepaid due to many other users having Verizon phones. With AT&T prepaid I had the same speeds as postpaid everywhere I went even at work. That said I’m back on AT&T postpaid with my XR and couldn’t be happier.

Sorry for the rant but I think this bezel thing is silly. How did we ever survive for all those years when ALL phones had bezels? Until the X came out I never heard a peep out of anyone regarding bezels. Especially iPhone users. Samsung and others were already reducing bezels before the X came out. Never heard any complaints. Now all of a sudden people make it sound like if your iPhone has a bezel it's ancient and hideous. To me it just looks different from the X and a few other models. No better no worse. I like the look of the X series, but I feel all the drama about bezels is just theater.

It's also kind of funny that people claim the .6 mm between the XR and the Xs adds too much thickness to a phone and feel they might have problems getting it in their pocket. That's POINT .6 of one mm or 0.023622 inches. Not to mention just about everyone puts on a case that makes their phone a half inch thick. Silly I tell ya.

The XR is a beautiful phone.

I tried three different clear cases for my red XR and kept the OTTERBOX Symmetry Clear case. It’s $50 which is obnoxious but I liked it the best. I also tried a Speck Presidio Clear case and some other cheap clear case from Walmart.

The cheap one from Walmart was just temporary protection after buying my XR from the Apple Store.
The clear Apple case wasn’t (still isn’t) out and didn’t like the four, third party cases the Apple Store had to choose from.

The Speck is harder than the OTTERBOX.
The OTTERBOX has a slightly more cushiony feel.
The Speck kinda felt like the cover for a T1-87 calculator.

Edit: I used my REDcard at Target and saved 5% so I have that going for me.

The “thick” bezel quickly disappears with regular use. It’s just initial picking it up in store coming from oled , I can understand. But non issue for me too

Thats another thing too. I've read so many comments about how much better OLED is and how they chose the Xs because of the OLED screen. I didn't notice too much difference to be honest. Well not enough for it to influence my choice one way or the other. Both had beautiful displays. Besides other manufacturers have been putting OLED displays in their phones for a while now. Makes me wonder if OLED was so much better why didn't more people choose another brand with an OLED display before Apple jumped on board?

The displays in the XR and the Xs look better than my iPhone 8 plus, but not enough for me to consider upgrading to another phone. I am skipping this round, and waiting for something more interesting. The current phones are really nice, but they didn't excite me enough that I felt I had to have one.

I agree its silly!

But I can't help it. I used an iPhone X for more than a year and it bugged me. I just could not "unsee" it, if that makes sense

I don't disagree it's a beautiful device!

Well said!! Good a Job! I agree 100%. :)

I am really tempted to trade in my x while the apple trade in is good vs what I paid and just wait out a jailbreak. Still have 12.9 iPad and an SE jailbroken

Got it On contract end of last year for $549+tax

Apple is giving $500 for The X

Eventually it will go down even more

7plus went from $285 to $250 like a few days after I traded mine in towards Xr

This.

I just got a XR for my sister. Don't really notice that big of a difference apart from blacks. The Xr display is just fine. People are just trying to act all superior and condescending and justifying spending $250 more.

You own the iPhone XR currently. So what would you trade your iPhone X in for? Another XR?

Bezels don't bother me at all. When you add a case you get them anyway. Hardest thing is for me to pick new service since I haven't had a personal phone for awhile. The T-Mobile unlimited senior (55+) plan sounds perfect but I am not familiar with their reliability... and coverage is still on the weak side compared to VZ. But it comes with international coverage and free time on airlines' GOGO wifi which would come in handy. All for $50.

Truthfully If Apple didn't tell people the screen was different than the XS then nobody would be able to tell the difference

I tend to agree. I looked at an Xs and Xr sitting right next to each other in Target yesterday. The displays looked exactly the same to me. If there was a difference, it was imperceptible to me. I pulled up the same story in the News app to compare text and noticed no difference either.

Completely agree, the xr is absolutely superb. Bezels? Meh, compare screen to overall size v every iPhone other than x/xs/xs max and you’re getting an enormous upgrade. Battery and camera - superb. Storage - spot on for the price. Size - felt big at first compared to the 6, one week later and I wouldn’t want to go down to a smaller screen?

Overall, a belting phone.

Sounds like a good deal. Where the senior plans lack is Data and I think streaming is limited to 480p. It says unlimited but where it is limited is video is SD quality not HD quality. I'm not quite senior age but getting there so I noticed that plan when I saw it advertised.

Service all depends on your area. I have used AT&T for years. I get service most places. I read T-Mobile uses the same towers so I am assuming they would be decent as well. Have no experience with Verizon, but there have been occasions when my Verizon friends had service and I didn't, or vice versa. No plan is perfect. I have another friend on Sprint and his service always sucks.
