    hi,

does anyone's button manager for the mybook series of hard drives work on leopard?

i installed the latest version (which was back in jan 2007) but neither do the rings show the how much space is used in the hard drive nor can i press the button to turn it off.

some help would be most appreciated.

I emailed WD about this and they responded with this (about a week ago):

Thank you for supporting Western Digital.

The current button manager (2.15.xxxx) is not compatible with Leopard. We are working on a new version that should be available in about 2 weeks. Please check our Download Library regularly for new versions.

Its not really touching your data. All it does is fixing the the button manager startup (preventing it from crashing). It's not really modifying your driver.

Anyways it works perfect for me.

I just noticed, I subconsciously corrected it.

Instead of "/Desktop/patch.sh" you have to type "~/Desktop/patch.sh". "~" represents your home directory otherwise you may type "/users/[your username]/Desktop/patch.sh"

    This should do the trick.

    Hi,
Could I ask you how to uninstall this altogether? Are there many files hidden about the system?

    Thanks.

I downloaded and installed this patch to, but it's not working at all. I followed all the directions in de howto, but after the last restart I can't find the buttonmanager at all. Is it supposed to be in the taskbar?

Btw, I have 24" iMac (first gen, the white C2D) with a WD Mybook Studio 1TB connected using FW800. Leopard 10.5.1 installed.

this is why I'd like to get anything removed from the installs i've made, I'm not bothered about the button so long as the hard drive works ;-)
I'm trying to keep my mac clean of as much 3rd party stuff as i can. Too many problems lately..

I've noticed that Energy Saver doesn't seem to work for this drive. I've set it to never put my hard drives to sleep, but yet this firewire 800 drive does go to sleep after a while.

Once the button manager is installed you can only see it in the "Activity Monitor" or when you push the button on your WD drive and the drive unmounts and shuts-down. And also it denies shut-down if you are still writing files to the drive.

I don't know how to uninstall it since it is working just the way it worked on 10.4 I never bothered to uninstall it.

I'd just like to know why it keeps going to sleep. Only went downstairs to make a brew (ok, was a little longer!) but came back and the thing was sleeping. But I sometimes don't realize and load up something from the Dock and it'll just bounce for ages, then it realizes that mounted drives aren't spinning.. Ok, nothing major just damned annoying!

Anyone else tried deinstalling this stuff? Does the above package have an a deinstall routine for WD Anywhere? I installed a WD drive and deinstalled the software later and returned the drive. WD support was almost non-existent.

Well it turns out it left a little button in the menu bar that I can not remove as you would most buttons. WD was no help would not even let me download software from their site because there was a registration of warranty issue with drive and they never fully acknowledged that I was the owner of their little GEM of a product.

I went through attempts to prove I was the owner by emailing receipts and phone calls and it took them forever to respond. I finally through in the towel and returned it.

I'm tempted to get one of those "clean up" apps or even to a reinstall of the OS to get rid of it.

Just found that WD Support website (wdc.custhelp.com) now has a firmware update for My Book Studio And My Book Home Edition; and also a software update WD Drive Manager utility for Macintosh that is compatible with Mac OS 10.5 Leopard. It's claimed to achieve the full functionality of lights, capacity gauge, and power button.

    Finally!

Downloaded and ready to install. Now I only have to wait for other people to update the firmware and install the drive manager first.

Any guinea pigs out there? :p

    Finally..!
I installed the WD Drive Manager (not called button manager anymore) and also did the firmware update. And I don't see any problems.
Sleep works and it shows the used disk space (I think).
You'll also get a WD icon at the menu bar.

doesn't work with my book pro edition

I have a 500gb my book pro edition and it doesn't work with it. I got an email from wd customer support today to download the new software but upon the download page it only says it is for the home and studio. I thought I'd try anyway and it doesn't work. bummer

I installed the firmware and software updates on my 1TB MyBook Studio drive and so far can report that all seems to work fine. Button correctly powers on and off; sleep works and drive capacity is represented in the drive lighting.

I installed the new MyBook studio driver for my 500gb MyBook Pro.. works ok for anyone who has the previous model and only needs to turn the drive off and on... the capacity gauge does not work and it does not eject properly. I may reinstall the hacked button manager.
