Some people need to save money, and this is a viable option.

You r right about that! +$$ SSD, And RAM! I am in Canada and the price is much higher here plus 12% tax too! As I mention I am not a CL virgin so it wasn't a big deal!

Damn, too bad she already sold it. I was looking forward to hearing how this story turned out.

Then again you're in Canada. Crime rates are much lower there.

Yeah its really low crime here! You can't just buy a gun like in the State! I am a Photographer and did so many deal on CL before too! So i know all my basic before dealing on CL :)

I don't get people that buy Laptops that cost over $1,000 on craigslist. How can you trust a complete stranger and hand over $1,500, with no real way of finding out if the product has any defects, and without the added benefit of a return policy etc.

I've bought and sold on craigslist, usually its cheaper products, like an iPad or a PS3. Even then, I feel like I'm flirting with danger.

If you are willing to spend $1,500 on a laptop, then surely you can spend an additional $500 to get the same laptop from the Apple Store along with peace of mind.

Couldn't find another deal like these because all of them are atleast 1800-2000 for MBP 15! Today.. I saw the seller post Brand new in box top of the line 13' MBP for 1300! I email and talk down to 1100! Meet her brother at Tim Horton! Done deal! I was gonna wait until the MBA but its gonna be over 1600 and will be slower for PS. I will be adding Kingston HyperX 8gb and a intel 320 120gb! Hopefully it will beat the new MBA! ;) I am in Canada and for this model brand new apple sale it for $1550 + 12% = $1736! I am saving $636 so i got room for update!

I hope for your sake it's not stolen, but you really have to ask yourself how they are getting hold of machines and selling them so cheaply. The whole thing stinks like last week's fish.

What a stroke of luck that you found someone who gets a MBP and doesn't open the box! What are the chances of finding a deal like that on CL? :D

Such a good deal too. You would have to settle for a refurbished one from an unauthorized dealer for a deal like that and it may not even work, and you got yours brand new!

Have you registered it yet?

You called with the serial number to see if it qualified for AppleCare, right?

It could also be stolen, meet at a bank and sign it over, otherwise you can get arrested for possession of stolen property.

I'd avoid that at all costs

I believe you can still get arrested for possession of stolen property after you buy it from a thief. It's still stolen property. Most likely they will make you appear in court and you would definitely lose the computer.

Take this from somebody who has sold/bought on craigslist and who was just "burned" with pirate online software:
1,500 is quite an investment and even if the seller is desperate for money and sounds reliable, I'd rather save more and buy it from an authorized store.
My 2 cents.

I very much agree with you on this one.
I rather buy it from Apple store and get top of the line machine plus get the AppleCare too.

RoyalFlush,

The crime of receipt of stolen property requires knowledge that the item was stolen at the time of receipt, so he probably wouldn't be charged with that. The stolen item could definitely be confiscated though.

YOU my friend are very silly!

You might still have to argue that in front of a judge. If you are unlucky enough to encounter an aggressive DA, you will need an attorney. The DA can easily argue that you should have known that for such a low price the item was likely stolen.

I don't think so. People who buy stolen property can easily get in trouble with the law, especially if you have an aggressive DA. They can always argue you should have known better. For example, if someone sells you a brand new car that retails for $ 20,000 and you only paid $3,000 for it...

Yeah, but they have to prove that beyond a reasonable doubt to a jury which would be pretty hard to do - we're speaking about getting a $1400 laptop for $1100. All he would have to say is that he saw another one (show a 2009 or 2010 model) for a similar price and didn't know the difference. I guess it depends where the OP is...in this area they DA's office is way to busy to prosecute people for potentially knowingly receiving stolen property ;)

Yeah you are right about that! Here in canada you can smoke a joint of weeds infornt of a cop and he wouldn't care!

Old-wiz don't tell me you never stole anything before! Cause i know you would lie anyway! lol If someone is selling me a car with Title retail at $20k and he only sell it to me for $3K? I would even give him a bonus of $1k!
