I tell you what. As a CG artist in my spare time - that commercial was very nice. Yes, the AilienWare case is off-the-wall and I say good for them!
Talk about gutsy, agressive design. Sometimes it's possible to make something so ugly it's actually cool looking. The Chevy Avalanche comes to mind.
Here's a company that calls itself "AlienWare", so they cook up boxes that are - alien. Those grills are illuminated BTW.
I do have an AlienWare somewhere in my future, I'm hoping they keep this designer around - good for him.
As for "looking like a toy", well that's opinion of course, but it is arguable that the original iMac did too - and Macs have been accused of
being toys for far longer than that.
I have to admit, there is a theme in this thread that walks a little close to blind loyalty to Apple. Rezet's comment about political party lines is a good one. Too often we let our loyalties close our minds to possibilities - especially those that are seemingly "opposed" to our own - and we do it before we have a chance to even absorb enough of the opposing perspective to know if it has value or not. But just because we close our minds and discount out of hand - doesn't mean it doesn't exist, let alone have value we could benefit from.
In another thread (bttm

) I placed a quote:
"Suffer fools gladly. They may be right" - Holbrook Jackson
What we may consider to be a fool - is our opinion. And regardless of what our opinion is, doesn't instantly cause that "fool" to not have knowledge we can benefit from.
AlienWare is a damn fine box. I dare say the closest to the Apple of the PC world - they have a passion, and it shows.
We have to be careful when we cast stones.
