Apple is still selling iPhone 4 as a unlocked model for $549. Do you think that they will sell 4S for $649 ?

My guess is the 4s will sell for $650, $750, and $850 for the 16, 32, and 64GB versions.

Also worth pointing out the unlocked 3GS is $375 and the 8GB 4 will be available on Sprint.

^On the canadian apple site it also shows the 3GS unlocked for $375, the iPhone 4 unlocked for $549 and the iPhone 4S unlocked "started at $649".

I do wonder if the Verizon and Sprint versions will have unlocked GSM portions.

    Good question.
I wonder if AT&T will block the sale of unlocked iphones at first and maybe start selling the 4S unlocked like 9-10 months later.

No-commitment phones are now sold as unlocked by default. This started with the iPhone 4S. It is highly possible that they won't sell them until a few months later.

I doubt it - as the unlock is technically controlled by Apple and not the carrier, expect to see them on launch day as well.

Yes but also depends what kind of deal the carrier has with Apple.
I guess we gotta wait and see.

I bet something like that will apply. Maybe not that long but yes. Otherwise likely cut down on the not eligible for upgrade purchases from the providers

Yeah. I have been curious about how this will work since the multi band radio rumors started.

I hope they are all unlocked. :)

When buying an unlocked iPhone, if you click on the learn more it states that an unlocked iPhone 4S doe not work with CDMA network like Verizon or Sprint. If you also look at the tech specs of the iPhone 4S and go all the way to the bottom, look at #4 and it says "CDMA available only if iPhone 4S is sold and activated for use on a CDMA network" which I'm guessing means that if you bought it from AT&T, it won't work with Verizon or Sprint, but it may work vice-versa.

I thought the iPhone 4S is already an unlocked phone, due to it being a world phone that is compatible with GSM and CDMA. Correct me if I'm wrong but I read through macrumors live feed update and that's what I got out of it.

It isn't a world phone... lies in marketing.

Educate me... If Apple made a one phone for all carriers, wouldn't you be able to freely swap it out to use it on any carrier you wish to? Example in the state you use Verizon or AT&T, and when you travel abroad just go ahead and pop in a prepaid SIM to avoid paying the outrageous roaming charges.

i just found something under the iPhone page, it says:

For those who are not qualified customers, are not eligible for an early upgrade, are purchasing an unlocked iPhone (for supported GSM wireless service provider networks only), or wish to buy an iPhone as a gift, see your carrier, an Apple Retail Store Specialist, the Apple Online Store, or an Apple Authorized Reseller for pricing.

    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone

probably they will sell as an unlocked model also :)

there's a difference between being able to use all world frequencies (ie not needing different versions) and actually being unlocked tho.

If it was a "World Phone" it would run on T-Mobile. They are part of the "World".

So my other question would be; are you able to freely switch between AT&T and Verizon in the states?
