I agree Enrico...I just feel it irresponsible to use this "world phone" terminology on Apple's part...

GSM phones have been called world-phones since the 1990s.

A world phone is phone that can be used in many different countries. Whether unlocked or not, the phone will still work. That's all it means.

I really think the US needs a law change forcing unlocking of phones to prevent this carrier BS

Why? Cell phones, including the iPhone, are offered factory unlocked in the United States. If you don't want a carrier lock, then don't accept the subsidy the cell phone company rewarded you with and pay full price.

Link here, or click "About the unlocked iPhone" on the right here.

I'm puzzled, though, as to how a factory unlocked "world phone" could not work on any given CDMA network, much less a (the?) major one like Verizon. Presumably, it's a restriction determined by the carriers, but if I have an unlocked GSM phone, there's no GSM prepaid SIM card in the world that won't give me phone service on that device...
but that's the 4...

That's Canada.

Yes, however, as I was looking on the 'Where to buy page', Virgin Mobile is listed. I would find it hard to believe that VM will carry iPhone 4S in Canada but not in the US.

At least I can hope!

Yeah, but if you read the copy, it specifically says "The unlocked iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S will not work with CDMA-based carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint."
what you sent via google says that. What you linked seems different. perhaps I wasn't reading carefully enough.

Because once you done with the contract it's yours and you would like to unlocked it! Make sense to you?

Can USA customer order from Canadian apple website? And have it shipped to USA
They have the unlocked versuion for sure at launch

I called :apple:'s toll-free number and the representative didn't know what the hell I was talking about! I asked her if the Canadian iPhone 4S is gonna be available at Apple.ca factory unlocked and as a world phone (Apple stores too) and she was like "we don't know yet" (Are you kidding me!). Its not good to have one 800# for two countries when its kinda different if you want to buy an iPhone from either country! I think they should add a better IVR

ex.
press 1 for US (English)
press 2 for Canada (English)
press 3 for Spanish (2nd lang. in US)
press 4 for French (2nd lang. in Ca)

--------- for Apple geeks & insiders ---------

Can you guys answer this simple question about the Canadian contract-free iPhone 4S ? I want to know something before I ask my friend to pre-order it for me!
