Of the US "budget" airlines there are, I've only flown Frontier and JetBlue, and both seemed very nice. They have very new planes, so the likeliness of something going wrong is low. Something does seem dodgy about Southwest, though. Their planes are old and from what I've seen on their television show and heard elsewhere, they don't treat their passengers very well, either.

And the whole A,B,C seating thing is pure crap. I want to get to the airport at my leisure. I don't want to get their early just to get an A on my ticket so I can board first.

^^^

Definitely. SW seems to have a devout following, and I don't know why. It also doesn't seem to occur to people that other airlines are often cheaper than Southwest.

I'ts been hit or miss with me really. On my previous trips, Southwest was more than American (or the same, but not nonstop), but on a trip my family's taking in a couple months, we managed to snag the $89 (each way) fare so it was around $200 round trip whereas all the other airlines were at least $400 round trip. And since there are 4 of us going, the savings added up real quick. You just have to book it at the right time. We got lucky since when we first looked up fares, it was $150 each way, then it went to $89 when we actually booked it.

I'll personally put up with the boarding process. I tend to get to the airport with plenty of time to spare, because I've got the sort of luck where if I get there an hour before the flight, I'll spend 55 minutes in the line at security and will be hauling ass across the airport, and if I get there 2 hours before, I'll get through security in 2 minutes, and I'd rather play it safe than sorry.

And regarding the safety thing....correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Southwest one of the only major carriers to not have had a plane crash (with the exception of the overrunning the runway at MDW which killed 1 on the ground?). I'm not defending them not inspecting planes, that's inexcusable, but they still have one of the best track records in the world.

Well, if they aren't expecting their planes as often as they should be, that track record won't keep up for long.

I also don't understand their booking. Their fares are never shown on any website except their own, and they offer six different prices for the same seat.

True. Fortunately it was caught before anything bad happened.

I don't get the pricing either. I think some are refundable, some aren't. Crap like that. I go for the cheapest.

I live in the Springs, and fly either Delta or Frontier, and haven't had any problems with either of them.

Do you usually fly out of Denver (DEN) or Colorado Springs (COS)?

I've never flown out of COS, though occasionally the rates are lower than DEN and I've been tempted to drive farther. How is COS?

Its nice, I've flow a couple of times out of the Springs. My in-laws live in Jacksonville and Frontier started non-stop service from Den to Jax last summer. I find it worth the drive to fly out of Den if I can go straight to my destination without having to change planes somewhere else.

I generally fly Delta; as I live in Cincinnati (Delta hub) and can pretty much get a flight to anywhere without a connection. They also have two or three Rochester ---> Cincinnati connection flights every day, which is very convenient when I want to go home (though CRJ aircraft are, in fact, the devil in mechanical form).

Furthest flights I took were CVG-VCE a couple summers ago, and CVG-HON the summer after that. Both were on 767-400ER aircraft, both in economy - but I got lucky enough to get the boarding door exit row to myself on the port side of the aircraft on two of the flights. Comfortable seats, ten feet of leg room, and a standard 120V AC outlet right next to me. It doesn't get any better.

This is the buzz right now:

She's being called "Deltalina" :D

I've always used whatever airlines was cheapest.

If those are the stewardesses on Delta, looks like I'll be spending a little more money!!!

Plus, if the airline cares enough to update their safety vids to a professional level.... ;)

I'll agree that Delta is better than United. There is talk of UA merging with either DL or Continental. As long as this new airline keeps a hub in Denver and stops cramming as many seats possible into their planes like UA, I'll be happy.

I like Delta's new look and I think that new safety video with Deltalina is rather good. Air Canada's new video is also pretty good. Although, I'd say Virgin America's is the funniest. I flew a 767 on United a little over a year ago, and I'm not kidding you, they played this!

I like AC's video, but find Delta's to be extremely cheesy.

Also, I felw the A380 last night/this morning to Sydney in business, and I have to say that it was one of the best flights that I've ever taken. Way to go, SQ!

I hope Delta doesn't merge.

Thanks for the safety vid links.

Here's an older Lufthansa one:

Looks like I'm jumping in during the middle of a conversation, but I'll add my two cents anyway:

I usually fly Southwest, and I love it. They're so friendly and chill; they're not uptight like other airlines. And it's cheap. And I've never had a cancelled flight.

Can't beat that :)

I haven't read through all the posts either so maybe this has been discussed but I think that people's responses will vary a lot depending on if you fly economy / business / first class. For me, my experience is determined mostly by whether or not the flight is on time and not so much the specific carrier. The one carrier I do not like for sure is American Airlines - their seats just seem more cramped and uncomfortable than others. I've only traveled first class twice: once Continental and the other time United. The United was a little nicer but probably only because it was a longer flight (so they served a better meal, etc.). Southwest I liked when I used to fly it (they do not travel the routes I take these days so I do not take them anymore). Midwest used to serve really good meals (for an economy seat).

My praise for american i had last week is gone. My STL-PHL yesterday was delayed and it looks like my return flight will be too. I was supposed to board 5 minutes ago and the plane just pulled up to the gate as i was typing this. Shouldn't be a long delay though fortunately.

Nice, I wonder when would it be my chance to fly the A380. Must have cost pretty a lot, how much did you pay?

Usually I fly Singapore Airlines, seeing as that I am from Singapore. But it is really expensive, just to fly to Taiwan last year, I coughed out $600+. If i have the money to spend and travelling rather far, I will definitely take SIA, if not I will settle for the budget ones like AirAsia and Jetstar. The service is top notch and that does it for me. One has got to be proud of his own country's airline right? But I wouldn't mind if they lowered the prices though.

I work for Lufthansa, so I get free flights on the Star Alliance network. There were about fifteen business seats open, so they upgraded me from economy. Sadly, all of the first class suites were full, but one can't complain when he gets a free flight in SQ's new business class.

The problem here might be the Philly airport...they notoriously suck and make everyone late all the time.

Wow. I would never dream of sitting in a business class, not when I am 21 though. Perhaps sometime in the future, but apparently, there seems to be loads of problems on the A380 from what I have read.

This was what happened:

On 24 March 08, delayed Sydney-bound passengers had to switch to smaller planes. The problem with the fuel pump was similar to a problem that grounded another A380 in February. SIA is currently the world's only carrier operating the A380, after having first introduced the plane on regular Singapore <-> Sydney flights in October last year.

That's actually the first problem that I've read about the A380. a/c changes happen a lot, I don't see this as being a big issue (unless you're someone who booked the flight just to ride on the 380).

edit - sorry, forgot to merge posts.

How are those budget airlines in Asia? I'm heading over there in a few weeks, and I was thinking about taking Jetstar. I already know how Asian airlines like SQ stack up against legacy US airlines like United, but I'd be interested to see how the low cost airlines stack up to my accustomed US low cost airlines.

The A380 is still very unstable so I will give it till the end of the year. I will never book a flight just to ride the A380, it is just too costly. If you took the A380, that means you boarded the airline from Singapore. If memory serves me right, only terminal 3 houses the A380? I haven't actually seen terminal 3 for myself. The shame .... :D

Jetstar in my opinion is one of the better ones. Tiger are well known for their bad service based on what I have heard from blogs and my friends. They are just budget, just plain boring, when there isn't anything to do. The worst of all that is that you got to pay for your food and it is seriously overpriced, you would be better off just bringing your own snacks to munch. Not a recommendation if you are flying all the way from US to take a budget airline, bored to tears.

When I took Jetstar to Thailand, I was practically dying of boredom, I could only sleep for the almost 2 hours I was in the plane.

Yes, terminal 3 is the only one at SIN with A380 gates for SQ. They're now flying to London as well as Sydney, but I don't remember which city gets service with the 4th A380.
