Probably because the graphics card cooled down during that time. This is a hardware malfunction and something will have to be replaced. What type of machine is this?

I ran an Apple Hardware Test and it said everything is fine! Still have the issue though/ Should I reinstall leopard?

benny

Listen to what everyone is saying! Take it to a genius and get it fixed, as it's hardware related, re-installing Leopard won't do a thing.

You are right, I know I should take it to Apple. It's just a big hassle. I will this weekend.

I cant upload this screenshot from grab! It's a tiff, is that supported? Here are my temps after being on for 15 min
cpu 99
gpu 122
gpu diode 128
gpu heatsink 122
ambient 68
mem controller 103
airport card 108
hd bay 115
(degrees F)

Well thats not very hot but to change your picture to jpeg just import it to iphoto and then export it as jpeg.

As others have touched on, you've simply been unlucky. The ram on the gpu (vram) has packed in and will need replacing. Take it to the apple store ASAP.

Open and shut case.

Ok, live 2 hrs away from the store so i'll go later. I want the new 3.6 ghz, will they let me exchange sense it's defective (paying the difference of-coarse)?

Your graphics card is gone.
You get identical effect when you overclock your card too much.
Go and get it replaced.

Video artifacting from a damaged GPU would not necessarily show up on a screenshot. If that was taken with a camera I'd be more prone to agree with your diagnosis.

That said, that is a bizarre one. I would definitely send it back to Apple for them to figure out. Is the machine still under Applecare coverage?

I assume you mean the 3.06 unless there's a secret top of the line option I didn't hear about. :p

They might let you exchange your machine if it was purchased within the past 14 days. Outside of that no way.

yeah the 3.06

Ok so i said i'd keep you updated... going to the store tomorrow. I'm getting the freezing issue now :(

Starting to sound like a possible logic board failure. :(

If that's the case I certainly DO hope you have active Applecare coverage.

Well we just got it a month ago so we should right? Should I restore before we go?

Hi
I'd say it's your video card and not logic board.

I had the exact same problem with green dots on my PowerMac G4 Sawtooth with Radeon 9000. They'd sometimes move around the screen too and cause random freezing especially in games (where the green squares were large and would wrap around the 3D objects).

They were scattered all throughout the OS GUI, I ended up changing the video card back to the stock rage 128 and that fixed things (although I could no longer run leopard "semi smoothly").

A few days ago I tried changing it back to the broken 9000 but the green dots once again appeared.

So unfortunately sending back to Apple sounds like your only option as you can't replace your video card yourself (I think thats still the case even with the new graphics socket on the latest iMacs)

EDIT:

Yes you will be covered if you are within your first year of regular warrenty, or within your first 3 years of Applecare.

I'd recommend you backup before you take your machine in. When you say restore I'm not sure what you mean, but if you mean wiping everything I think it's necessary, just delete any personal info.

Hi
I'd say it's your video card and not logic board.

I'm not sure what the situation is with the newest iMacs but back when the GPU failed on my 20" white Core Duo iMac the repair was a logic board replacement. On that machine I do believe the GPU was attached to the logic board. It's sort of Apple's one-size-fits-all repair.

At any rate it will not make a difference to the OP because yes, of course, he has full coverage within one year of purchase and they will repair it free no matter what the problem is.

Oh, and when you get it back I recommend you buy Applecare coverage for it and extend it to a full 3 years. ;)

Good luck.

Sorry, by restore i mean archive and install. I have also backed up the stuff i need (wish i had a time capsule!).

Now that's just a piss off, I thought it ended mid november

All freezing is not created equally ;)

The freezing that was fixed in November was due to faulty GPU firmware and fixed with an update.

One can only assume the OP's freezing is as a result of some hardware failure or other, presumably the GPU or logic board.
