its hard to tell what apple are going to name the next generation iPhone XR as iPhone XR2 wouldn’t really make any sense and iPhone XR 2019 would be confusing. I would get it would be called iPhone 11R or maybe the iPhone XIR but that still doesn’t sound right.

What do you think they will name this years iPhone XR?

XR2.

Then I think we’ll see the end of the XR line by 2020 as that seems to be when most Apple watchers are predicting a significant redesign for all of the form factors.

Since there are rumours of bigger changes in 2020, including all models going to OLED, I think the 2020 iPhones will be 12 (or XII if Apple continues with the Roman numeral thing, which I’m not so sure that they will). That is assuming that 2019 are 11 series, even though they are supposedly keeping the same designs & sizes other than the camera hump.

So Ten R Two? That would officially be the worst name ever.
Agreed. 11R is pretty bad too.

Actually, since the X, Apple's iPhone naming scheme has been terrible, full stop.

I'm very worried about this rumour being unable to get the X and XR because of PWM.

It’s a convoluted mess. Some phones have Arabic numerals (7, 8). Some have Roman numerals (X). The bigger size is sometimes “plus” and sometimes “max.” The faster version is sometimes “s” and sometimes gets a whole new number (why isn’t the 8 a 7s?). Now we have an R for the first time ever, when it really should have been a C to be consistent with the 5-series. There’s no 9 at all. And don’t even get me started on the SE, which uses letters as an abbreviation (special edition).

I know none of it *really matters* but it’s hard to believe how bad Apple is at this for a company known for total attention to detail.

This would be an Apple-y thing to do, but it would also be pretty terrible because of the high price of the non-R models.

The original excuse for the X to justify its ridiculous price tag is that there's not enough OLED screens in production. Now that the technology is becoming very common (and has been common even back in the Nokia era, circa 2008), there's really no excuse for them to do it in 2020. Make it so that the industry no longer needs a C, an SE or an R model for flagships.

Apple gave themselves a problem that could have been prevented in the first place. They should have called the 8/8 Plus, the iPhone 7S/7S Plus; the X as the iPhone 8; and the XS/XS Max/XR as the iPhone 8S/8S Plus/8R.

... and here I was thinking "Max" and "XS Max" were the worst names ever.

Yeah, I still don’t like the term ‘Max’. I just think it sounds so generic-ish. Apples marketing usually is pretty good, but even after almost a year later, I still don’t like the Max moniker. I Remember when I first heard the rumor that it would be labeled Max, and I called bogus on it right away, and was I wrong, unfortunately.

11R

Because XI seems archaic.

Given that it has a square camera bump, I would say it's clearly part of the iPhone 11 family.
