U actually can use phone on ipood

I love my iPod Touch; except for phone, it does everything I need. Unfortunately sales decline as people move to iPhones and iPads.

It actually does do phone if u have the 4th gen ipod with the built in mic u can get the txt free app and for every txt u send u get minutes on talk, dont worry if u dont have a number because txt free gives u one after registration and u start with 40 mins of talk, unlimites txt

I think now that the performance has evolved a lot, and previous iPhone generations continue to be sold, I expect the iPod touch to stay one generation behind the iPhone for cost reasons.

And how are you supposed to connect to the cellular network? Open wi-fi is a rare beast around here. An iPod Touch is never going to be a proper phone.

I'm in the 'may switch to iPhone' camp

I've been waiting a long time for a reason to update my iPod Touch 2. Now that there are more pre-pay options for the iPhone, I may just go the route of buying an unlocked iPhone, get on a prepay plan and dump my Verizon postpay cell phone service.

The iPod Touch's demographic is largely being filled by the increasingly competitive budget smartphone market. For $270 you could get a decent budget smartphone that would do a lot of the things the dated touch can do, and function as a phone.

I beg to differ. I have the 4s and Gen3 Touch. I use my Touch constantly and it has allowed me to not put my 4s at risk when going to the gym (where I use NUmbers on it) or hiking or stuff like that. If the Touch were to go away, I'd be stuck buying a final generation Touch to replace my older one once it dies.

New touch is likely. Now whether or not it'll be stripped of goodies like gps is the question. Most likely it will be again. But it would be pretty damn sweet to be able to use the iPod touch as a gps with ios 6.

I'm sure people like you who have an iPod Touch AND an iPhone, yet still use the iPod Touch significantly are a pretty small minority. The many iPod Touches I've seen have complemented feature phones, and I am beginning to notice that people I know are steering away from the touch these days: One of my friends is replacing his 4th gen iPT with an iPad, another has already replaced his 3rd gen iPT with an iPad, one has traded his touch for a budget smartphone and another is planning to give up his touch for an Android tablet.

heres the thing, most parents will never buy their 6-14 year old a smartphone, any smartphone. besides, most kids in that demographic just want to text, play games, take pics/vids, & post of social networks. the iPod touch fits perfectly into that ecosystem & once they become teens with their own money to spend, most will stick with the brand (brand stickiness) they're used to.

as for the specs

expect the same soc as the 5g iphone except less ram, same screen size, and rear camera that takes 1080P video and 1920x1080 pics, and a compass.

Oh a budget smartphone for the same or less than the iPod Touch would fit those uses fine - Especially the first one, which isn't even possible on an iPod Touch. I mean, what's the difference in safety and all that between getting a 10 yr old an iPod Touch or a budget smartphone? IMO Facebook is much worse than being able to call or text, and if I were a father I'd much rather my kids did the latter...

I don't use my iPad as a super sized iPod. I use it as my ultra mobile computer (I'm only using Numbers, Pages and Keynote for productivity nothing over the top) and don't have my entire music library on it. I do have my entire library on my Touch and run a pair of Numbers spreadsheets and a bunch of older games. I still play the original Infinity Blade on it.

iPod Touch 5th Generation Release Date

iPod Touch 5th Generation Release Date is said to be in October 2012 lets wait and see what happens....

Whatever it is I'm sure it will be disappointing to many. I don't see it having GPS and if it has the smaller connector that's a problem cause I use a plug in GPS module on my iPad and Touch. A shift to the new connector makes that a problem. I use my touch as my iPod tunes player and email reader when out driving and around WIFI. I don't foresee any change as motivating me to buy another one. I'm more interested in what the iPad mini brings.
Also when I go to the gym or am walking I much prefer my iPod Nano not the Touch.

I think the iPod Nano and iPod touch lines are going to merge and have 4G added. The iPod Shuffle will get a minor update. Then Apple will sell iOS device with 4", 7.85", and 9.7" screens.

I really hope that apple release a Ipod touch 5th generation, it be good having a upgraded Ipod touch.

If there is a new Ipod touch 5th gen, I hope its as good as the Ipod touch 4s.

if you ask about ipod touch 5th gen release date then its due for September and when we talk about features than it will come to know when we get it :)

You might have already thought of this but you can to go the app store and download text and talk apps. One of the ones I use let's me watch videos for call credits. It's called "TextNow" you can get it for free and deal with adds or drop some cash and remove the adds for a year. You'll need headphones with a mic if yours doesn't have a built in one.

Runs on wifi though. If you want something in case of emergancys then look into track phones for that. You have to buy minutes but big whoop
