I would not mind so much if other here actually had some backbone and stood up for their views and did not buckle and comply with everything Apple does.

iPhone4 = looks cheap and horrid when people here thought it was a fake Chinese phone, when it became obvious it was Apple's new phone it was amazing and the best phone ever.

iPad = No other size than 9.7" would do, Apple spend years picking the exact right size for the iPad, Even Steve said so, and was used to bolster this argument that a smaller table would be stupid and apple would never make it, nor should they. Now Apple do make it, people rave about how amazing it is, and even sell their iPad's to get iPad minis.

iPhone Plastic. No Apple will never lower itself to make a plastic phone, plastic is junk, they don't need to compete for that market, let others fight for the plastic phone space. Apple won't do that, nor should they.

So how long before Plastic iPhone is a good idea folks?

Same with iPad. iPad 16:10 = OMG nooo terrible idea, Apple should not make it.
When I know, and others know, full well, as Soon as Apple DID make a 16:10 iPad it would be OMG amazing, it was so right to make this new product.

It's a shame people can't stick to their convictions here, but keep changing their mind based upon what a company offers them :(

Can't speak for other people, but personally, iPhone 4 and plastic iPhone, I had/have no opinions, and I never posted about them.

iPad mini, I still find it harder to use than the regular size iPad, although the portability is amazing.

And you didn't mention the iPhone 5. It's amazing in almost every way expect for the longer screen. While it's nice to have more screen space, it is more awkward to hold than the iPhone 4, and ebooks and webpages look stupid in landscape mode, where you get long lines but less content because you can fit fewer lines per page. I keep rotating it this way and that hoping to find the "right" orientation, but the truth is that neither way is quite right.

But the thing is, despite a few drawbacks, I do use the mini and iPhone 5, and for the most part they are amazing devices that are a pleasure to use. I think if you read carefully, there are people around who comment on the negatives, but for the most part the positives outweigh the negatives.

I like both 4:3 and 16:9. Both compromise on something. Overall I'm used to 16:9 though, every screen, monitor, etc in my house has been 16:9 for the last 5+ years.

Whats the difference between iOS on a 16:9 iPhone 5? Its not a bad experience.

I prefer 4:3 for web browsing and PDF reading. But 16:9 is a much better experience for video watching and gaming. The biggest thing I personally do on a tablet is watch videos on YouTube I'm subscribed too and Netflix, HBO, hulu plus etc.

All depends on what you're into...
Where is the dislike button when you need it?

4:3 FTW!

It's a shame that people have to continually create strawmen with over-simplified arguments to imply another viewpoint is irrational.

If the iPad mini were to go retina with 326 ppi in the next gen then they would want something to differentiate between the iPad mini and full size iPad. Apple has shown with the iPhone 5 that they can successfully increase the length of the screen without many problems. So how about a longer 16:9 ratio iPad with stereo speakers to differentiate it from a regular 4:3 retina iPad mini. Any chances of this?

Now that the iPhone 5 has gone 16:9.

I think it's pretty much a coin toss, 50:50, iPad 5 could very well go 16:9.

Feel free to read peoples views on this very forum upon seeing the iPhone 4 for the 1st time BEFORE they knew it was an actual Apple product.

I simply repeat what's been said here.

You realize that this forum is made up of different individuals, right? If there was one or two people that actually met your description, I'd ignore them rather than pretending that they were commenting on this topic.

But there probably isn't anybody with the exact POV of your strawman.

I simply repeat what's been said here.

There is no doubt that the first impressions of people who post on these forums of Apple devices are usually out of step with how devices are received. The iPad, iPod, iPhone are all examples.

Maintaining conviction, as you call it, is pointless when there is a lack of total information about a particular product. Given the fact that it was not clear what materials were used in the iPhone 4 until the launch, there were reasons to be skeptical about the initial leaked devices. Given existing 7" tablets with 16:10 aspect ratios before the iPad mini, there were real reasons to be skeptical about a smaller iPad. Looking at screenshots of iOS 7, there is skepticism about its usability.

I imagine for a majority of people, it's not simply a function of Apple releasing a product and is automatically adored - it's a function of a product that resonates in the market. If Apple were to release a 16:10 iPad that was not awkward to hold in portrait orientation, it will be well-received. Given existing 16:10 or 16:9 tablets on the market, it's worth maintaining skepticism about the viability of such a product.

It would really help for you to not constantly impugn the motivations of other people's arguments when discussing these issues.

Well Apple could make an Ipad in 4:3 and a slightly larger iPad at 16:10
Tweak the OS to take advantage of the larger screen area and extra pixels.

In the same way the iPhone 4 vs the iPhone 5

Then we can sit back and watch no-one here, apart from me, buy the enhanced 16:10 model :D

I photoshopped a "what people say is worst case, that way round would look terrible photo" to show, how it would benefit in just one official app. Pages.

Also below some other's I did a while back in 16:9 vs the current 4:3
Thought I accept 16:10 would probably be a better compromise as in the photo above

9.8" 4:3 display to a 9.8" 16:9 display is going to not look like what you've demonstrated. The 16:9 is going to be much smaller.

You appear to be demonstrating a 11+ inch display iPad.

hopfully zero.

I've used 16x9 tablets, and they suck.

No idea what the "right" aspect is, but I'm telling you now - it's most certainly NOT 16x9 - they're too long and narrow in portrait, and too wide and short in landscape. Suspect something closer to 16x11 would be better. which is damn close to 4:3.

Then again I hate 16x9 monitors with a passion as well; for similar reasons. They're too short.

12inch for 16:9

11inch for 16:10

I was realistically thinking 16:10

It's strange how you think something can too short irrespective of it's size but due to it's aspect ratio.

Do you go to the movies and walk up to a 30ft high screen and say, oh this is a bit short?

Yes, and I don't know why people keep doing this on there forums.

They constantly seem to think making something a wider aspect ratio means taking area away from the top and bottom as opposed to adding it to the sides.

It's strange why many people do this, and see going wider, instead of being wider than they have now = more space, can only see it as making the top and bottom less meaning they have less space.

I'm sure they don't do it with other things in their lives.

Do they hear about the new 10" hot dog, and rather than think, oh nice 2" more hot dog, they grumble, oh dam, means it's going to be really thin now.

Strange

Whether you add to the width or take away from the height, the result is a narrower tablet that is more awkward to hold, with a screen size that is only optimal for watching wide-screen movies, but substandard for any other use. I already mentioned how the iPhone 5 is more awkward to hold than the iPhone 4/4S. You haven't really responded to that point.

It's not strange at all. It's completely reasonable. If you are going to compare aspect ratios, it makes sense to assume that everything else is the same.

Not gonna happen anytime soon if at all. 16x9 is just odd for a large tablet especially. Its inferior for web, photos and books. The only thing its good for is video.

The current iPad aspect ratio is almost that of a printed page. Printed photos are either 2x3 or 4x3 typically. And the web just looks more at home in landscape mode. So making a product that ideal for video and nothing else makes no sense when Apple got it right making ideal for MULTIPLE things.

Ok, I can see I'm getting nowhere with the small number of posters here as you simply are unwilling to accept anything other than 4:3 is the right size.
I know a 16:10 model would sell well, and you do also, but you don't personally want one, so fine.
I'll just give up on this for now, wait for Apple at some time in the future to perhaps make a 16:10 tablet, and then watch you all change your mind.

If Apple does make a 16:10 tablet, please do refer back to this list before you go accusing any unsuspecting poster of changing their mind.

The right aspect ratio for a tablet is not 4:3. It is 1:√2

I don't know why you're falling back to that argument.

Movies are specifically formatted to the wide screen. Web browsing on the iPad is not. While there is some content, like the kind you posted, that shines on 16:10, and there is content like what I posted that looks bad on 16:10.

Whether you like 16:10 depends entirely on what kind of content you view.

iPad is designed around being used in portrait (placement of home button, logo and camera).

Android 16:10 tablets are designed around being used in landscape (stereo speakers, camera, logos, etc).

I think it depends on what you get used to FIRST or how well you're able to change your style of usage.

Also your usage depends on what you prefer. If all you do is movies and even games you might prefer 16:10. If you browse the web and read pdf's mostly or whatever you may prefer 4:3.

I'd like to point out that that is not what I said, I said your preference will be based on whether you primarily read, or watch content on your iPad. Those who primarily read will prefer 4:3 those who watch 16:9 or 10. As a person who primarily reads, I don't want the ratio to change, and to me it would look wrong. I don't like other tablets which have this ratio, and before you say it, I'm not as fond of the iPhone 5, as I have been of other iPhones, also for this reason, it doesn't bother me as much as a tablet with this ratio would.
However I can see why someone who primarily watches content, would prefer 16:9.

If the iPad mini were to go retina with 326 ppi in the next gen then they would want something to differentiate between the iPad mini and full size iPad.

Physical size and perhaps storage are likely all they will go for. After all, if they had any desire to go 16:9 they could have done it ages ago.

It's about viewing distance...

I'm not using a tablet as a cinema screen, and i'm not trying to do work on a cinema projection screen.

My preferred monitor size is 16x10 - but on a tablet you have to compromise a bit more due to the desire for a very small (relatively speaking) screen. Go too far from square and you're throwing away screen area that you could have without making the tablet much more awkward to carry.

The issue is that when you're in landscape mode on 16x9, reading text, your eyes often have to read along very long horizontal lines, which isn't comfortable (which is newspapers and magazines typically divide pages into columns - and they have pages in portrait aspect). When you're actually creating content, you're typically not entering data in, in columns.

When you're in portrait, its a lot better, but it just feels unwieldy in the hand with something so long. Also, the on-screen keyboard feels cramped in portrait as it is quite narrow. When in landscape, the on screen keyboard takes too much vertical screen real estate.

Also, due to the way area works, having an excessively short and wide screen also means that for a given diagonally measured screen size, you get less usable screen area the further away from square that you go.

If all you're doing is watching movies, 16x9 is probably fine. If you are working with 2 apps side by side maybe its better, but you still have the issues with screen area and keyboard taking excessive space above. I'd rather just have one app full screen and flick between them from side to side (10" or so screens are too small for multiple apps open on the same screen anyway really).

Unless of course you're talking about something like a 15" or 17" tablet - but then you're getting even larger and more unwieldy, somewhat defeating the purpose of a tablet - you may as well just go for an 11" or 13" ultrabook and have a real keyboard (thus having more usable screen area than the 15" tablet as you don't have a keyboard displayed on it).

Anyway, those are my thoughts... I've gone through the transitions from 4:3 to 16x10 on my own machines, deal with 16x9 at work and have evaluated 9 different tablets for actually getting work done - using each for about a week as my primary machine (including both ipad form factors and a heap of tablets from samsung, HP, and lenovo). I.e., I have actually used 16x9 tablets to try and get work done for about 7 weeks.

Currently my preferred tablet for actually getting work done would be a Lenovo Thinkpad Helix (DESPITE it being a Windows 8 machine), but that's more to do with it being a pretty decent laptop that gets you a tablet for free, and a pressure sensitive stylus. I can see those taking off for management types - in meetings, where they can work on a network- shared OneNote workbook (with the stylus, from their own tablets) displayed on a projector for example. Also, providing the management types with a Helix won't cost us any more really than the laptops we already supply, as they'll simply get one device, rather than a tablet + laptop.

But it's still 16x9 and the screen still feels awkward.
