I'll guess iPhone 3 as well. At it's introduction anyway. Probably after that it'll just be the iPhone.

iPhone VC: for iPhone Video Chat.

The next revision will have substantially the same features with the addition of a front facing camera and full ichat support (Video Chat). Naming conventions like this can get confusing when, like Sony, you sell tons of different models at the same time, but since they sell just one at a time, naming it after the new hardware feature makes sense.

The one after (June 2010) will obviously be iPhone QC (Quad Core).

I think it'll be some kind of visual related codeword to emphasise the better camera/video. After all, the iPod Touch is named after the touch screen, the most visually arresting obvious thing different when you see someone using it.

So I think it'll be the "iPhone View", or "iPhone See" (nice pun on it being revision 3, or "C" too…) or somesuch.

iPhone HD

I'm thinking iphone video, or iPhone HD if they pull off 720p recording.

Other possibility is splitting it to iPhone nano and iPhone pro if they come out with 2.

Goes along with what they did with the iPod-iPod photo and video, I can't think of any other awesomeness they might pack into the new hardware to justify including it in the name. They kindof hosed themselves with calling the 2nd generation 3g if there is no drastic hardware changes.

Would it be legal to set up a betting pool for this? I want to win some money with iPhone video or iPhone HD

The eyePhone

I think we're overthinking this. Apple is simple so I think they'll just get rid of the 3G label and called it simply "iPhone." It'll be referred to as iPhone (3rd generation) on Apple support pages, etc. (exactly like the iPods).

3.0 (or any variations thereof) is too easily confused with 3G.

Bingo. I was about to make post saying it will either be iPhone Video or iPhone HD and then I read yours. Mark my words, it is going to be one of those two names. Each release Apple does adds a descriptive element to the title to boast its most prominent new feature, like how the iPod went iPod Photo, then iPod Video, and the iPod Shuffle, and iPhone 3G. Since the new iPhone will most likely boast video chat and/or a better camera, it's gonna be something that describes that feature.

The only problem with iPhone Video is that it sounds a little stale since there was already an iPod Video. So I'm gonna go with iPhone HD.

So now we have 2 iPhones:

1: The 1st Gen iPhone (also known as: Original iPhone, iPhone 2G and iPhone 2.5G)
2: iPhone 3G

I know that in the past, Apple has been pushing out new iPods every year or so and each year, the newest model is known as iPod 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G... the reason we label them as such is because the iPod name stays the same each year so we have to have something to be able to identify which model it is.

Now with the 2 iPhones, how are we supposed to start identifying them?

Just plain "iPhone" works for the original iPhone
iPhone 3G works for the 3G iPhone (2nd Gen)
What's next? iPhone 3rd Gen, not to be confused with 3G? iPhone 3G 3G? iPhone "new-function-here"? It's already confusing enough that people call the original iPhone "iPhone 2G" and "2.5G" I understand that they're talking about the data network generation, but what the heck are we going to call the 3rd Generation iPhone if 3G is already taken by the 2nd Gen (not to be confused with 2G).

This is very confusing.

What are your suggestions for how to name the iPhones? I think Apple should come out with cool codenames for the iPhones like they did with Mac OS X! That could be wicked cool! Of course these code names would not be ON the iPhone itself, it will still be just iPhone but, we could identify them easier.

1: Classic
2: iPhone TripleG

They don't need to call it anything. A product can be new without its name changing. Had the presence of 3G not been necessary for the major iPhone 3G marketing push Apple has accomplished in the last year, I would even go as far to say that they should've just called the iPhone 3G "iPhone" as well.

They can market new features without a confusing new name. There's no reason for unnecessary differentiation between current and previous products based on name unless the product line contains multiple devices -- the iPhone product line currently does not.

It'll probably still be called the iPhone 3G. I can see them selling the 16GB as a base, with higher capacity options also coming with different specs (e.g. video camera, or some other high-end feature.)

The problem is, with the iPod it was really easy for us to describe each new model as iPod 2G, 3G, 4G, etc. But "iPhone 3G" has totally confused that and Apple knows that. I think they sacrificed their opportunity to call future models simply "iPhone", they need to give their buyers a way to describe the new model since they screwed up the naming already.

Most people don't refer to the iPods like we do though. Its most likely just the "new" or "old" iPod version to them, they don't think in generations. So I don't think Apple thinks they messed up by calling the newest iPhone the iPhone 3G.

Knowing Apple, it will probably be marketed as just a new "iPhone",
but called something like "iPhone (headset volume control)" in their support literature.

I think they will call it the iPhone. Just iPhone. Nothing else necessary. They'll let us message board nerds figure out how to differentiate the models when discussing them.

I agree. The iMac G4 was just "the new iMac" when it was released, G4 was only added after the G5 iMac was released. Will probably be the same with the new iPhone

Neurotic.

I want it to be called iPhone More Powerful Than Superman, Batman, Spiderman, the Incredible Hulk, Data, Osmosis Jones, Bullwinkle, ED-209, Gyver, Jackie Chan, David Hockney, Megaman, Missle Command, File Cabinet, Fantastic 4, The Fallen, Unicron, Galvatron, and Sliced Bread Put Together.

. . . . .. .... .... .. . Oh man that'd be an awesome phone!!

:D:eek::confused::confused::confused:
Love Osmosis Jones!!!
