What did they call the new iPod? iPod.
What did they call the new iPod with video? iPod.
What did they call the 2nd gen iPod Nano? iPod Nano.
What did they call the 3rd gen wide iPod Nano with video? iPod Nano.

etc, etc.

So no, I don't think they will tinker with the name. They may even drop the 3G attribute and just call it iPhone again. IMO they should have done that right away. In many countries, 3G has been around since 2003 and 3G support is taken for granted. To launch a 3G phone in 2008 and put 3G in the name is a bit dorky, it's like calling the MacBook "MacBook DVD" because it has this "revolutionary" new thing called a "DVD drive" that lets you play movies.

I seem to remember an apple developer mentioning somewhere the that technically the Iphone 3G is also the 3G Iphone.
G1 Initial Release
G2 Firmware, Space upgrades
G3 Iphone 3G

How this makes sense, IDK, but I trust that developer had plenty of insight into the Iphone.

my gues..

iPhone Video or something like that....

no iPhone today do OFFICIALY video and that will be the next thing

i like the sound of iPhone HD tough ....

The same as the iPods.

They didn't change the name of the iPods everytime they released them. There was iPod, iPod mini, iPod Shuffle, and iPod Photo, then Nano, Classic and Touch.

When having colour screen become standard, they morphed iPod and iPod Photo into one - becoming the New iPod.

My bet is this will simply be the iPhone, or new iPhone, like it should have been with the 3G. They can't rename the product with every bit of hardware change. (well they can, its just stupid, IMO)

iPhone G3

As in iPhone "Generation 3"

Isn't that confusing? Considering this one is called the iPhone 3G?

This is a move Sony would make, just confuse the costumer; Walkman 1kj7h8 or Walkman 8hbg6d5 <-Which one is the new model? Like seriously, can I just get a name for the product, not the serial number!

They called the second iPhone the iPhone 3G, just to be very clear on the fact that it does in fact have 3G, since this was a major flaw to many on the previous iPhone.

The next phone will revert back to just the iPhone, since it is now apparent to consumers that the phone does have 3G.

When you say, "to be very clear on the fact that it does in fact have 3G," what you mean is, took "3G" and associated with something good "iPhone" and made the same product not only sound better, but turned 3G itself into a marketable item.

Regardless of how many phones there were on 3G last year and even the year before, the iPhone 3G is what made "3G" itself popular with the general mobile phone consumer base. Before that, data, especially fast data, was not nearly as important to a lot of people.

yeah i think it'll still just be called "iPhone". the current one is called iPhone with 3G, so i think we're still on the 1st generation of iPhones. maybe it'll be called iPhone 2?

A Mustang is a Mustang, whether it was made in the 60's or the 00's. "iPhone" is somewhat iconic, so why screw with it?

Or we just start calling the original iPhone ==> 1st Gen iPhone, iPhone 3G ==> 2nd Gen iPhone and the new one will be the 3rd Gen iPhone.

How about just "iPhone 3G"?

Why not just keep the name?

Here's what I mean:

iMac
Mac Pro
MacBook
MacBook Pro

These have had different generations but, the name says the same. The only way you can tell which generation it is, is by the year it was made or if you remember which generation it is.

Example. I used to own a (Summer 2000) iMac. It was just called iMac, but if I needed to get service done to it... I had to tell them it was a "Summer 2000" model.

Maybe they'll just call it (Summer 2009) iPhone 3G?

* iPhone Mad Max Edition
* iP-XM498THX-V3 ( as suggested by Windows/IT expert )
* iPhone Titanium
* "Q" (omnipotent and omniscience edition )

Yup. Maybe "The New iPhone 3G" for a few months, until it goes back to just iPhone 3G.
