First thing? Probably watch porn. Next, I'll work with Creative Suite. Can't wait until it's delivered.

I will marvel at Apple packaging, ogle the thing as it sits on my clean desk, then get the show started. Setup my 3TB Time Capsule for Time Machine and Apple use and demote my 2TB TC to NAS for my Windows computers. Install CS6, Fusion, Windows 7 & 8, laugh, connect my MM-1 speakers and enjoy some music while I school myself on the ways of OS X. :)

I will immediately install a few things:

  1. Steam
  2. World of Warcraft
  3. Starcraft II
  4. Diablo III
  5. Ventrilo
  6. Chrome
  7. Adobe CS6
  8. Office 2010

And then I will move my iPhoto library from my MacBook Pro to the iMac. Also, I will migrate my iTunes library to the iMac.

Going to have a massive reinstall of all audio software, then a mountain of time testing all plugins/sessions on Pro Tools for compatibility.

Taking a big plunge here as I have an album that is 3/4 finished, and never switched computers/operating systems so far into a project before.

Should be interesting and hoping for the best!

I'm going to be getting my 27 inch iMac in Feb or March. This will be my first Mac, and I'm really looking forward to getting one. After Christmas I'm going to be doing a bit of extension work on my desk to accommodate the iMac  and all the other bits and bobs that I'll need on my desk.

Once I do get it, I'll:

1: Check for any physical damage.

2: Install the 16 GB of ram I'll have purchased from Crucial.

3: Switch it on, go through the setup.

4: Check the screen for any issues

5: Then I'll go into the System Preferences and adjust the various settings to my likeness.

6: I'll then have a feel around  and get used to Mac. I've done a fair amount of research, asked a few questions on various forums since summer, so it shouldn't be too much of a shock.

7: Give a good 6 weeks or so to find my feet with the Mac and I'll then purchase and install Parallels Desktop 8 and more than likely Windows 7 64 bit. I've spent an hour or so on both Windows 7 and Windows 8, and I just find Windows 8 not very intuitive and don't really like it, whereas Windows 7 for me is a lot better, and at the end of the day Windows isn't going to be used a great deal, so I'm not bothered if I have an older version of Windows.

Pull out the 3TB HDD and replace it with my new 512GB Samsung 830 SSD. Spend the $900 i saved from not buying Apples 768GB SSD option on a killer NAS to hold my media files.

I actually got the 3TB fusion, i will use the 128GB SSD for bootcamp, my 512GB 830 for OSX and apps and will use the 3TB drive in my existing USB3 enclosure to backup critical files.
I picked the 830 over the 840 pro due to the 830 being a proven drive, the 840 pro has already had quite a few reliability issues. You should never buy a SSD that is new to the market, give it six months to see how it fares.

why wouldn't you run clean my mac rather than reinstall.. or
I would not recommend CleanMyMac, based on the number of complaints that have been posted in this forum and elsewhere. As an example: CleanMyMac cleaned too much. Here's a recent example. While you may not have experienced problems yet, enough people have that it's wise to avoid it, especially since there are free alternatives that have better reputations, such as Onyx.

You don't need "cleaner" or "maintenance" apps to keep your Mac running well, and some of these apps can do more harm than good. Most only remove files/folders or unused languages or architectures, which does nothing more than free up some drive space, with the risk of deleting something important in the process.

These apps will not make your Mac run faster or more efficiently, since having stuff stored on a drive does not impact performance, unless you're running out of drive space. In fact, deleting some caches can hurt performance, rather than help it, since more system resources are used and performance suffers while each cache is being rebuilt.

Many of these tasks should only be done selectively to troubleshoot specific problems, not en masse as routine maintenance.

Mac OS X does a good job of taking care of itself, without the need for 3rd party software. Among other things, it has its own maintenance scripts that run silently in the background on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, without user intervention.

When I get mine, I'm installing software.. HAHA

DaVinci Resolve, CS6, FCP7, MPEG Streamclip, etc etc etc.

I'd say I'll be doing my best Glenn Close impersonation of her singing "As If We Never Said Goodbye" from Sunset Boulevard (heaps of clips on YouTube for those interested, lyrics are quite appropriate) - then I'll open the box, plug her or him in (I like to give everything a name, e.g. my toaster is called Clive), and then give them a good working over. If everything is not up to scratch, a few good minutes/hours of vitriolic bantering with Apple, and if everything is good - crack open that bottle of Moet I've had in the fridge for weeks - sit back, relax and enjoy ... I've waited 25 years for this, and I'm going to enjoy every second ;)

unbox
install all my stuff
present it to my flatmates
laugh at their bulky windows machines
hope they don't cut my throat with the thin edge

and pls stop those threads - i can hardly wait for my baby to arrive !!

Well mine arrives the day before i have an exam. So it will probably stay in it's Box until late evening :( But i think my brain will just forget what i have to learn and just think about the computer that waits for me on my desk

poor guy! i can feel with you!

Hay it's my first one! I've been PC user since I can remember. With 2 iPhones, 2 iPads, 3 iPods, Apple TV and a Timecapsule I think I qualify for the title Apple fanboy! I have to admit though I will feel more legit on here as a proper Mac user. It's been a long wait but it's nearly over!

It'll take you about a month to "get around" the new OS.

But trust me... once you "get it"... there's no turning back.

Just an absolutely wonderful user experience.
