Wait it out

I'll wait it out until the next one is released. Until then my 3GS is still running awesome. When the new one is announced, I'll either get it or get an iPhone 4 at a reduced cost [after the 5 is out]. Until then, I'll remain a happy 3GS owner. :)

I don't have any problems with my 3GS either, but the retina display and other features are oh so nice. And it does get feel a bit laggy after a while  but I bet a restore would speed things up again. I'm going to seriously try to stay away from iOS 5 on my 3GS (assuming it comes out before iPhone 5) unless there are some killer, must have features.

Potentially a tough decision ahead, as I am still using my iPhone 2G. Depending on when the next iPhone is scheduled for release, I may opt for the iPhone 4.

You are being _very smart_ !

I've had every iPhone made to date. I find the 3GS the very best of all. Yes the iPhone 4 has the "retina" display. Yet on balance that in no way, compensates for the other shortcomings.

So I must say to the smart enthusiasts that are enjoying their 3GS, keep enjoying it, knowing you've got a great phone. Your certainly getting your moneys worth, and you're positioned perfectly to buy an iPhone 5 if you wish. One final caution. Wait until some reviews come in before purchasing iPhone 5. You want to be sure it's not a problem phone.

I buy a lot of Apple products.

Last year I bought two laptops. A 15" and a 17" MBP. The 15" had to be returned four times because it had huge scratches on the palmrest and lid. More than 2" long and over 1/8" deep, it had obviously not been checked in quality control. But four? Yep, true story. Over two months and four orders (it was BTO) finally I had one with only minor scratches.

At least I only had to return the 17" once, but also being a BTO I had to wait for them to credit my card & then start with a new order all over again. When I received my new MBA this year it was DOA & wouldn't boot up, so back it went.

The bottom line is unfortunately it's obvious the quality control at Apple is really on the decline. I've had over 10 new Apple Laptops (PowerBooks/MBP's) in a period of twelve years and each of those were excellent. Not a single return. I never expect perfection but being from Apple they should look like & function like the new computers they are.

I have an iP4 but even if I still had my 3GS, I'd probably just (grudgingly) wait until the 5 came out. I don't have any interest in using any phone other than an iPhone right now, so waiting would be my only choice.

If I HAVE to get an iPhone 4 in the year 2011, I'm just going to buy a used on on craigslist. I'm not that much of a spec whore (or else I'd already be on the android bandwagon), but I simply refuse to go into another two year contract with last year's technology at this point.

>Update: Japanese blog Macotakara reports that the fifth-generation iPhone will "probably" not ship until 2012 based on the current status of part production.
According to Chinese source, iPhone 5 will not probablly be shipped during 2011 because the parts manufacturing for iPhone 5 are not started.

>The site had previously offered relatively accurate information about the iPad 2. The site also reported earlier this month that the fifth-generation iPhone will adopt an aluminum back and a redesigned antenna.

>Update 2: Macotakara has clarified its original report to note that the fifth-generation iPhone is apparently not set to ship before the end of Apple's fiscal 2011, which occurs in late September 2011.

>Update 3: All Things Digital and Engadget are hearing similar claims that there will be no fifth-generation iPhone introduction at WWDC 2011.

I still have iPhone 3GS. I have been expecting iPhone 5 be released in June or July 2011. My 2 year contract is due to be expired on June 29, 2011, although I am eligible for an upgrade to iPhone 4 now.

Now the announcements above say that iPhone 5 will be released in September and shipped in early 2012. I am frustrated again.

Why would Apple be happy to postpone releasing and shipping to later dates? If Apple announces any release, they must be honest to tell truth in making their business good and success what they say and must not delay anything, but the releases of IOS and hardware must be on time to make their business good and success as what they would announce earlier.

Would Apple be happy to see people getting frustrated and angry and be happy to watch people to flock to PC Windows desktops and laptops, and other cell phones? If so, that's SO SAD!! :(

I don't know if my 2 year contract with AT&T to be expired in June 29th this year that would be continued or not because of iPhone 5 delaying to Sept or early 2012. I don't want iPhone 4 due to the antenna problem. Must I wait until then? If I am advised to go ahead to upgrade to iPhone 4, I don't want AT&T would require me to sign up for another 2 years which means I can't upgrade to iPhone 5 until Feb. 2013.

If this does happen, I'll be off to the new iteration of the BlackBerry Bold.

I don't hate my iPhone, I've just come to realise in the last 2 months that it doesn't fit my needs anymore. I barely use 3/4 of the apps I have and would be happy with a music player, a browser and an email service. It sucks and I'm sure I will be casting envious glances in your guys' way come September, but its time for something new for me.

I've been avidly reading recent reports. I'm on 3G S since launch day on a 24 month contract, so it'll expire in June. I was fully hoping to hop right onto 5th gen iPhone but as we get closer, this seems to be a diminishing reality.

I recently jailbroke it and so it has given it a new lease of life with different UI tweeks that were previously unavailable. This is the only reason I can imagine waiting until iPhone 5 in the Autumn, otherwise I'd be pulling my hair out with frustration. Yes, it is only a phone, so pulling hair out shouldn't be an option but for a gadget geek, 2 years on the same device is a VERY long time, especially for 3G S users with no flash for the camera!

So, on June 6th, I shall be waiting with baited breath for news of an update, either a 3 or 6 months wait..... only Apple knows!

I plan to sell my IP4 at its 1 year mark so that I am not trying to sell a 2 year old IP4.

I will then pick up a new IP4 at the subsidized price.

When the IP5 hits, I will pay full price to get it then sell my IP4.

I'm probably going Android this time even iPhone 5 comes out. Things that will make me stick with iPhone:

- Larger screen
- Better notifications
- Widgets and richer lock/homescreen

Anyways, if that's not the case, I'll be choosing from LG Optimus 2x, Samsung Galaxy S II (probably this one), Motorola Atrix 4G and HTC's highest end model. (Don't know what it will be since they seem to push a new phone every day)

For someone stuck with a 3G after their 3GS got smashed in a car door I'm somewhat anxious to move up to a 5 when their contract ends (the 3G was a loaner from a friend until then). I wish they'd at least preview the new phone in the April timeframe so that we can know what we're waiting for (in terms of new features/specs). I'm torn anyway between the larger screen and HSPA+ capabilities of some of the newer Android phones.

My vote was for moving on and at least looking at other phone options.

There's no way I'll be using my upgrade to get an year old phone with outdated technology.

I'll switch to one of the smartphones that do make use of a dual core A9 cpu and offer a bigger display.

I will keep the iP4 till the Blackberry 9900 comes out later this year and I will move to it no matter if there is a 5 or not.

It would be outright stupid of Apple to skip an year in iPhone releases when their hardware isn't in line with the competitors. Would lead to too many lost sales.

Odds are, Apple will atleast release an iPhone that is identical to the iPhone 4 (same parts) but with an A5 chip instead of an A4 chip so it'll be significantly faster. That's why the leakers are having a tough time spoiling it, because the A5 parts apple is making are assumed to be going into the iPad 2 only.

Good points, although the "Q1 2012" in the thread title is ambigous - is the poster talking about calendar years of Apple financial years? If the latter then Q1 2012 could be as early as 26th Sep 2011 (the first US business day of Apple's FY2012). I agree though that Apple would be stupid to give too long a window to tempt people to implement option 3 of this poll.

If they do do a modest refresh then I agree that dropping A5 technology into an otherwise unmodified iPhone 4 would be a worthwhile placeholder. Personally though, I would prefer them to use a single core A5, possibly downclocked a bit from the existing A4, so that they could boast of a worthwhile battery life improvement as a feature of the new model. This might also allow them to harvest some of the rejected iPad A5 chips by taking units with faults localised to one core and using those as single-core parts and maybe only using half the cores on the GPU to further increase yields. This way Apple might even reduce their build costs, still offer a modest increase in CPU power (maybe 10 or 15%), a worthwhile increase in GPU power (on their claims they would say 4.5x the A4 based on half of the claimed 9x for the current A5 configuration), and all that with a boost in battery life. I think that would be an interesting offering, it might even make me upgrade and I already have an iPhone 4.

I am getting to a spot where I might have to give up my iPhone (so that work will pay for my service, rather than I - finding I use the smartphone less and less every year for personal and more for business-related).

While its disappointing to me to not have an EDC iphone, I will still look at ways to get back onto one if it goes LTE, etc., in the next iteration. It will be a bad move for many if Apple doesn't refresh...but for some, it won't be so bad. Selfish, yes. The techie in me will be missing the new every year...

I've been looking forward to finally updating my iPhone 3 with a cracked screen ... now it looks like I'll be waiting longer. As tempting as it is to just upgrade to the 4 now (especially if they do release a white 4), I would kick myself when the 5 came out. I just hope it comes out in late fall instead of pushing back to 2012.
