Dave McKenna! He's been one of my biggest inspirations for the past year or so, he was such a genius! The techniques he uses (left hand walking bass lines) come in especially handy when playing solo (hence this recording) or duo gigs (with just me and a horn player, vocalist, etc). As a result of doing so many gigs like this recently, I've really learned to imitate his style quite well I think (at least the left hand bass + chords and melody in the right hand). My stride skills are still developing—I rarely play stride on gigs at this point, because I'm still not great at it.

And oh man, the rhythm changes at the end (1:02:10 out)... that's something else!

"Yes, a collect call for Mrs. Floyd from Mr. Floyd.
Will you accept the charges from the United States"
"He hung up. Is this your residence, sir?"
"I wonder why he hung up..."
"There must be someone else there
besides your wife to answer."
"Hello?"
"This is the United States calling."
"Are we reaching?"
"See he keeps hanging up."
"But it's a man answering."

One of my regrets is that I didn't get to see LC in a live performance. Ah well.

Neither did I.

And yes, I regret this, also. A superb artist.

A former student of mine, who is now a very good friend of mine, did bring her mother, an ageing hippy, poet, and occasional Buddhist, (and a woman who adored the music and lyrics of Leonard Cohen), to one of his concerts a few years before her mother - who has since died, in fact, she died relatively young, in her early 60s - had passed on.

At the time, my friend was a postgrad student, hence money was somewhat tight, but she loved that she was able to treat her mother to this week-end away, to a performance by an artist that her mother loved, and they both had a terrific time.
