It is also my favorite, although I have recently taken a liking to Symphony No. 3: "Eroica"

'Eroica' is considered to have been the symphony where Beethoven 'found his own voice' as a symphonic composer, the first symphony which is truly his own, and owes little to what and who went before him - his first two symphonies were more a sort of homage to Haydn. I like it, but he got better - much better - the longer he composed.

Interestingly, 'Eroica' was not the first - or intended - name of that symphony. Initially, Beethoven had planned to dedicate it to Napoleon Bonaparte (viewing the latter as a revolutionary and as someone who had brought overdue social and political changes to Europe), but changed his mind when Bonaparte, (clearly getting somewhat drunk on power), had the arrogance to crown himself Holy Roman Emperor, to Beethoven's utter disgust.

That's funny, I just looked at my notes from my Introduction to Western Art Music class I took, and we actually discussed 'Eroica', and you said almost everything that was in my notes. :) It still blows my mind that he was going deaf when he wrote some of his best works. One of my favorite (yet a sad story) is the one where after he premiered Symphony No. 9, he was measures off at the end of the final movement, and the counteralto had to walk over to him and physically turn him around to acknowledge the audience's applause.

Helen Jane Long - The Aviators

It's the theme music for the new BA commercial. Really good. You can get it on iTunes.

Terria is the first Devin Townsend album I listened to. Truly a great album, a must for all metal heads :)

I'm listening to:

Spectrum - Florence and the Machine
Kill Your Heros - Awolnation
Midnight City - M83
Poet and the Pendulum - Nightwish

Then I'm off to bed :p
