So I decided that I would learn to play Ice Hockey.

I always wanted to try playing as a kid, but while there were 2 teams in the general area, my parents couldn't really afford the skating lessons, hockey lessons and equipment for a growing boy. There also wasn't much in terms of 2nd hand equipment, I think.

I played rugby, had a season as an adult and then in a preseason, tore my meniscus. My knee is great now, but I kind of feel a little unsure about going to a rugby team here, as I would go into work with black eyes and bruises, I even bruised my eyeball once, which is really not a nice look (just a big puddle of blood on the white of your eye).

Speaking with a husband of one of my wife's friends, who plays hockey as an adult, he said that it's fast, is non-checking, contact happens but the players all want to be able to go to work the next morning, so it isn't going to have a level of violence like the Pens-Flyers series...

I started at Flushing Ice Rink doing beginner skating lessons. I just finished that sessions of lessons, and went from being only able to skate forwards (with a little bit of speed) to being able to go forwards (swizzles, glides and normal), backwards, just about crossover, turn from forwards to backwards and stop (not the sideways stop yet). The teacher said I should be able to start beginner hockey clinics, so I need to get some pads and the rest of the equipment and then get onto my next step.

Do it. You're gonna have so much fun and make so many good friends. Don't worry about your skills, they will come eventually. Hockey players are a helpful bunch. They will be there for you. Every one of them was where you are right now at one point. Remember that. No one is born with skates on their feet.

More like re-learning or dusting off my German and Italian, especially the Italian. Lived in Rome and studied Italian for a year, but haven't really kept up with it the past couple years. The German is more recent (and much easier), but I just need to refresh that a bit.
