A couple of old threads on this subject: your favorite three t.v. shows, Favourite TV-series and What Are Your Favorite TV Shows?

From 2005:
More or less preferred order:
- Red Dwarf
- Black Adder
- Fawlty Towers
- That 70's show
- 3rd Rock from the Sun
- Futurama
- My Family
- The Simpsons
- Farscape
- Twin Peaks
- Absolute Fabulous
- Earth 2

I watch way too much TV... mmm... TV...

And I might add these two as mentioned in 2006 (Lost didn't make the final list):
- Sopranos
- Dr. Who (the new series)

And of course a couple I forgot or have gotten into since:
- HBO Rome
- Heroes
- Firefly
- Scrubs
- Stargate SG-1 (we've only half way here, so far)

Non-fictional:
- Pen and Teller's Bulls***
- Mythbusters

And a couple of contenders (not quite making it onto the list):
- My Name is Earl
- Andromeda
- Torchwood (Dr. Who spin-off)
- Babylon 5 (just started seeing through those for the first time in years)
- Battlestar Galactica (the new series)
- Family Guy
- American Dad
- Father Ted
- My Hero (quirky and mostly bad, but the first seasons was quite funny)
- Black Books (thanks Osarkon, I forgot about that one)

I don't watch much TV, but get these from other places (DVD, download)

  • Ed
  • That 70's Show
  • Futurama
  • Jonathan Creek
  • Fawlty Towers
  • Blackadder
  • Curb your Enthusiasm
  • Seinfeld
  • South Park
  • Monk

House and Mythbusters are the only television shows I'll watch. But since I don't have cable, I just buy them on DvD.

- Bones
- House
- Prison Break
- America's Next Top Model
- Gossip Girls
- Extreme Home Makeover

I used to watch Ugly Betty but I don't have the time anymore :(. I also used to watch Justice and Standoff, but they got pulled off the air :(. My favourite tv show of all times would be Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but its not on air anymore.

-Keeping Up Appearances
-Are You Being Served?

This year I watched a ton new shows that I never watched before, mostly because I have DVR now and can watch them when I want to. The news shows I watch this year are:

Pushing Daisies (probably my favorite new show)
How I met Your Mother
The Office
30 Rock
Heroes
Chuck

Some of those, since I started watching them I have gone back and watched the first few seasons to get caught up.

1. Rescue Me
2. reruns of Rescue Me
3. so sports count. Hockey, hockey hockey.
4. Grey's Anatomy
5. whatever my wife has us watching. I watch sports, she picks most of the shows, things like October Road, Notes From the Underbelly. (we just had our 1st.) However when Dancing with the Stars comes on, I get on the computer.

past:
king of queens
seinfeld
simpsons

present:
its always sunny in philadelphia (funniest show on tv right now hands down)
the office

here are my faves

Bottom
The Young Ones
Smoking Room
Never Mind The Buzzcocks
Red Dwarf
Headbangers ball
The Simpsons
South Park
X Files
Futurama
Ross Kemp On Gangs
MythBusters
Just Shoot Me
Two And A Half Men
Max And Paddys Road To Nowhere
The Chapelle Show
there are so much more :D

current: project runway, gossip girl, supernatural, simpsons, law and order, mythbusters, greys anatomy

past: samurai jack, the oc, x files, firefly, west wing

The Wire (The greatest show in American television history)
BSG
Six Feet Under
Big Love
As Time Goes By

As Time Goes By is easy viewing for me, but is also a big favorite. It's too bad more people haven't heard of it. The Wire is simply phenomenal.

Top 3 Current:
1) Friday Night Lights
2) Battlestar Galactica
3) Lost

Top 3 All Time:
1) Buffy
2) Firefly
3) Veronica Mars

Honorable Mentions:
- Slings and Arrows
- Doctor Who (The new ones)
- Wonderfalls
- Simpsons
- Scrubs
- Stargate SG1

So yeah. I'm a geek who loves Joss Whedon. And Sci-Fi. But mostly shows with very strong characters.

And as much as I love Sci Fi, I have to say that Friday Night Lights is simply *the best show* on television right now.

It can't be, because The Wire is active again. Every show in TV history kneels before it to one degree or another.

But, I'll say that FNL is probably the only network show capable of standing toe to toe with HBO. Great stuff overall.

Cancelled the cable last year over lack of a la carte subscription, plus the vile commercials and content on a long slide into bottomless pit.

Of course one still needs something to zone out on so now I have downloaded stuff like

CSI NY
CSI Miami
Law and Order CI
The Closer
and I have some NYPD Blue on DVD

I rummage around in podcasts, staples are Lehrer's news and the video of Russert's Sunday show. Might catch up with Terry Gross' Fresh Air if I didn't hear it on the radio. Sometimes I watch Brian Williams's news podcast. I think he was popped into this era during a magnetic fields reversal or something and actually hails from a much earlier and more civil time, therefore I feel myself becoming mildly deluded if I watch his newscast for three nights in a row. Like I think everything's gonna work out ok. WTF!

From Audible I take the audio from Charlie Rose's TV show. He's ok when he's not fawning over some starlet, and when he remembers that what we probably have tuned in for is to hear the guests talk.
