I love this thread as I've been able to get some really great apps from your suggestions!

Here are a few of my favorites:

Pocket - To save articles for later.
Wunderlist - To-do list.
Spotify - Music
2016 Office - Much better than 2011 version.
Simplemind - Free mind-mapping.
Fantastical 2 - Greatest calendar app I've ever used. (Sunrise is a close 2nd)
Dashlane - Password management.

Omnifocus 2 – Steep learning curve to use properly, but my life would be complete chaos without.
MsgFiler – If you have any kind of e-mail mailbox hierarchy, this is the ultimate time saver for filing.
1Password – Unless you want to use the same password for every site (don't!) a password manager is essential.
Motion – I have to do a lot of presentations in my professional life. Motion lets me look smarter than my competitors.
Keynote – See 'Motion' above. Make movies in Motion, drop them into Keynote.
Moom – Others have mentioned. Great window manager.
DropBox – If you regularly use more than one computer, this is a simple way to keep in sync.
SuperDuper and Crashplan – belt and braces. I'm old and I've been there. You WILL lose all your data one day. I'll be able to get mine back.
Office 2011 – For compatibility reasons I have to use Word. Couldn't live without it, but it's rough. Can't afford to risk a beta. Hoping 2016 is a nicer experience.

Great thread! Having been a Mac user for six years, I have been through a lot of apps. And through a lot of garbage ones as well. Here is a list of some that I have installed at the moment:

Alfred 2: Search for files across all of your drives, including cloud ones
Caffeine: Prevent your screen from sleeping
Clear: Keep your to-dos arranged in lists
CrashPlan: Backup your drive locally and in the cloud
Divvy: Arrange your windows on the screen
Dropbox: Keep files in the cloud
Evernote: Best. App. Ever. Just use it. Now
Flux: Dim your screen when your wish for the good of your eyes
Mailbox (Beta): A minimalistic mail client that lets you re-receive mails
Noizio: Put yourself into relax mode by listening to chill sounds
OpenEmu: Emulator for retro gaming
Pixelmator: The best alternative to Photoshop (and the price is great)
Plex Media Server + Plex Home Theater: A great app for organizing and watching your local movies (and syncing them to iPhone/iPad)
Pushbullet: Send files and so on from Mac to iDevices and vice versa
