I agree with many of the posts in this thread, especially:

-Cases with the top and bottom open.
-Ugly gaudy "alienware" toy cases that appeal to 13 year olds (but are used by young adults.)
-Tiny cutouts for the headphone and lightning port causing adapters and 80% of headphones to be worthless.

And personal pet peeves about usage of cases:

1. I don't understand why people use pouches or slip-cases, it seems extremely impractical and a hassle when you have to remove the phone out of the pouch and slip it back in every time you want to use your phone (plus it looks ridiculous when you're doing it.)

2. In the market for cases, everybody's obsession with their need for a "lay on table design." I really don't get the desire to be able to lay the iPhone on it's face...why would you ever need to do that? I can't think of any circumstance where you would need to have the phone sitting on it's screen with the rear facing up. If people are clumsy and lay it on it's face by accident, just habitually condition yourself to lay it on it's back...

I hate when the tops and bottoms of cases are covered. Prefer the open look. Looks a whole lot better. What's wrong with laying on it's face? Why do we need to "condition" ourselves to lay it on it's back? Sheesh. Get over it and worry about you own damn phone.

Who said I was worrying about other peoples phones? Did you even read what the title of this topic is? It's a thread to express our pet peeves about phone cases. I think lips designed for the primary purpose of laying the phone on it's face is moronic, and that's my opinion...

And you feel you need to tell us to "condition" ourselves? Again, worry about you own damn phone.

No, it was just a simple suggestion because laying a phone on it's face serves no practical purpose, so I don't see the point in cases designed with that feat in mind. I don't care either way how you use your phone...don't get your panties in a bunch.

Face down will protect phone from you or others from accidently dropping something on the glass. Second, with a case on it, and face down, if a liquid spills on back, case will provide more protection with face down. Third, with jailbroken phone, laying face down turns off ringer or puts it in airplane mode. So face down serves many practical purposes.

The first 2 reasons are grasping at straws but I can see the 3rd point being useful for those that use that feature on their jailbroken iPhones. Noted.

...forth, I like flipping it over in public places and my desk as work when I don't want people to see my notifications etc or just want a bit of privacy for a short while. Or even just to stop me being distracted for a while.
Fifth, the lip helps keep screen protectors on.

I personally hate cases that cover the volume keys, but dont have the + and - engraved into the button. The inCipio cases seem to do it.. but not many.

I'd love to have a bumper like case with a back that has the silver buttons... That would be great.. Cant find though..

- Cases that interfere with usage of the ports. I've seen cases that don't let you use some headphone plugs because they cause the socket to be recessed! Fail.

- Cases that just snap on. They snap right off if you drop the phone, then it gets damaged sliding across the hard concrete.

- Camera/flash opening that's too small, causing reflections from the flash to wash out your photos. My first Incase Slider had this problem, and I always wondered why photos came out washed out! Luckily it was corrected in future models.

- Cheap hard plastic cases that crack if you so much as look at them wrong. It's the same kind of plastic they use for CD jewel boxes.

- Cases that don't give you quick access to the bare bottom of the phone to dock it. Not an issue yet with the iPhone 5, but I'm glad my slider's bottom came off for my 4 so I could use it in all docks.

Totally agree. Not only that, but cases w/ a front lip tends to catch dust and lint and prevent you from easily tapping screen elements at the edge of the screen. Besides, these phones have Gorilla Glass which is virtually impossible to scratch anyway. You could leave the unprotected phone on its face repeatedly and still not scratch it. In fact, before my case arrived, I would place the phone face down as the front is much more impervious to scratches than the aluminum anodized back.

I'm really curious about the rationale for those who insist on a front facing lip design.

1) I prefer the clip on style cases with the top and bottom open.
2) Matte finish - I can't stand shiny plastic cases that are prone to fingerprints.

1) Cases in general

after a iPhone 3g,3gs,4,4s and now 5, and MANY MANY cases, I can say that I hate them all. I've seen iphones shatter in the most protective cases (one of my friends has gone through 4 iPhone 4's while always using a otter box), have had iphones shatter in cases, have had iphones shatter without cases, and the way I now see it is that it doesnt matter, if your phone hits the ground just right it will shatter no matter what, and its a waste of money on something that -might- save your phone. Might as well just put that money towards actual insurance on the device.

The only kind of cases I think have any purpose are super-thin clear cases to protect against scratches, but even then why spend the money on that and just get ghost armor or zagg instead.

It's a recent cultural trend we were both left out of, referred to as "iPhone planking." Everybody's doing it nowadays.

I used to carry this sentiment about the iPhone 4 and I didn't care for cases and rather just installed a full body protector. I decided to go for a case for the iPhone 5 for one reason, no full body protector in the market covers the chamfered edges, which is the most vulnerable, easiest part of the phone to scuff.

It just takes lots of digging and research to find a high quality, functional case that doesn't completely hinder the appearance of the phone. For instance, I prefer the black/white versions but here's a clear one to go with your example:

Another observation... who thought it would be a good idea to put a bottle opener on an iPhone case? Aren't people concerned about the amt of torque and leverage that would be applied to the phone if you use it to open a bottle? or how about the possibility that beer or a carbonated drink would spill on the phone?

i don't think people with those cases care.

i mean honestly who in their right mind would do that anyways?
