For me it was a choice between an Acer, Lenovo and Apple Laptop at my school store.

Looking back I'm glad i choose the MPB. Its been 7 months since i got it and now looking back, i know i made the right decision.

I picked up a 13" MBP for portability, I wanted to run OS X on it, and I can definitely say after having some bad experiences with prior laptops, the MBP hasn't let me down.

Mr Mustang, I do not understand what prompted your response, but I have two points for you. 1) That description was as simple as anyone in the field could give you, and 2) you apparently do not realize how complicated the analysis of time–frequency decomposed neural signals can be—if you're saying it's easy, I hope you start publishing your methods soon so us neuroscience grad students and professors can start making use of your work!

Off topic, I know. Sorry.
Just b/c its grad school work doesnt make it complicated.

Got my MBP for the main reason......TIME!!!!!

I am completely happy with windows XP, its a good OS now and runs good. i just dont have the extra time to deal with its "quirks" like i used to.

In all honesty, OSX is a much better mobile OS than Windows. I have been using Windows and Apple laptops for the past 5 years (work/personal), and OSX is just more efficient for mobile use. Additionally, the trackpad and battery life on Apple laptops by far exceed those on Windows laptops.

For desktop systems though, I prefer Windows. :)

Some of my reasons to buy a MBP are:
Vista killed my sony vaio
I use a iMac at work using mac only apps and I need to take some work home
I need a laptop for mobility
resale value
lack of viruses
they are sexy!

Always been a Windows user till I got my first notebook last year which was a MBP, that has been subsequently been refunded and when I get my second one sometime round the end of next month it's probably going to be an MBP again (update permitting).

So why? Well quite a few reasons:

The ability to run any O/S I want easily.

The Unibody chassis, have used quite a few different Windows notebooks at work and nothing has come anywhere near as close to feel as solid and unlikely to crack as the unibody.

The Trackpad; again every Windows lappy I've used I immediately plug in a mouse, they're just to small and not responsive enough. With the MBP Trackpad I hardly ever used a mouse unless I was doing work with Photoshop. Responsive, nice tactile feel, decent size and the multitouch gestures are really useful.

MagSafe. Company I work for does aftersales support for PCs and laptops and the amount of customers who have called up with cracked screens etc, because they tripped over their power cord and knocked their laptop of the table. Both my girlfriend and I tripped over the power lead on my MBP on several occasions and it just popped out leaving the MBP undisturbed.

The screen, colours etc look great.

i have been waiting for the new macbooks since jan. Tuesday i gave up and bout a Sony Vaio E series core i5.
Today i returned said laptop, there was so much bloatware on it that it was running slower than my 4 yr old dell 1.8ghz. after removing all the sony software and fixing the registry which took hours it still wasnt great.

I am back to waiting for the macbooks. i want a computer that i dont have to constantly clean the registry etc for it to stay running well

mine is for work (to learn how the operating system works, and how to use its applications), meanwhile others use it to complete their "i'm a fanboy hipster at starbucks, typing a novel" persona.

Why I want a Mac:
···Using MacOS for 15 years
···Hate Microsoft
···Apogee Duet only works on Macs

Why I want a *NEW* MBP:
···Powerbook G4 is nearly 6 years old

What I want to use it for:
···Ableton Live 8
···Serato Scratch Live
···Adobe CS4 Web Premium
···iPhone/Android Development

Future:
···Logic or Logic Express
···Final Cut Express

For everyone who's MAIN reason is OS X, you might want to invest the time in a hackintosh. Yeah, it's not the real thing, I agree. But if all you need is the OS, and you can get it to work right, it is absolutely identical. I'm basically on a Mac Pro at the moment, except I built this computer myself. And it's way more powerful.

Unless you put your own blood sweat and tears into the project you are basically at the mercy of a bunch of high school girls who thirst for fame. That's the sole reason I got out of the project, after people started holding things hostage from the community because they felt they weren't getting their fair share of the recognition , not to mention the time component and and cat and mouse business. Too much hassle.

Wow...after reading all the replies, i cant wait till i get a 15in mbp. Like some i too dislike apple, but thats mainly the iphone line.
I dont care if the nbp updates today or next month, iam still saving up for one (starving student). I also hope the price doesnt get higher.

Wanted better portability, coming from an 8 pound 17" Dell Inspiron

I have liked Apple ever since I first tried their products and wanted one of their computers too

I had very little experience with OS X and wanted to give it a shot

Aesthetics are very nice, and I also like that

Wanted it to just work. Driver and software installations on Windows to make all of my peripherals work was a pain in the rear. I was very happy to say the least when I plugged in my printer which required me to use a driver CD in Windows and watched it tell me its ink level on the computer and print my page.

I love the battery life

So many neat and programs that I never could find anything like them in Windows, like one that lets you use your Wii remote as a mouse. I found a Windows program for that, but it didn't work

Little novelty things like Stickies and Dashboard

Sorry I rambled.

Final Cut Pro -

It's a necessary evil, I'm an editor who'd prefer to use Avid for everything, but I don't always get to choose the software the shows I work on are cut with.

And having a Macbook Pro means I can go anywhere and edit on either Avid or Final Cut. Though I'm annoyed at the loss of the ExpressCard slot... I hope they put it back in, or at least add esata.

I am not an editor but use FCP. I just picked up a refurbished late 2008 15" 2.4 unibody MBP with the expresscard slot. They appear occasionally in the Apple refurbished store and sell quickly. Do you prefer processor speed or scratch disk speed for FCP on MBPs?

When I bought my 17 inch Powerbook G4, 7 years ago, I did so because it was the only laptop available at the time that had a 17 inch display. Its thinness, beauty, and (relatively) light weight also impressed me. I loved OS X from the beginning. The only downside to the G4, which had immediately become my primary computer, was that I could not run Quicken on it. Thus, I still had to use a desktop PC for Quicken and other Windows apps.

Two years ago, I replaced the G4 with a 17 inch 2.4Ghz MBP, almost entirely because I wanted to be able to run both OS X and Windows apps on the same machine. I was also encouraged to make the upgrade because the G4 was still going strong after 5 years.

After Apple starts shipping its refreshed lineup of laptops, I plan to buy either a Macbook Air or 13 inch MBP, depending on the features of each.

I am about to swtich to OSX for the first time if they ever release new MBP. Because the old ones are ridiculous for this price. Depending on how long my current Samsung Notebook lives I can wait till June.

My reasons are not that I like Apple but that I just think with this unibody MBP they really did a great job. Price is high yes, but compared to a Dell Latitude, HP Envy or Elitebook, Lenovo T Series it is not that expensive and has a few advantages.
The display is good, the 15" has a GPU to allows gaming a little, and a good battery life. For a decent Display there is only Dell SXPS or HP Envy. Both have poor battery life unless you care a bunch of batteries. Latitude, Thinkpads and Elitebooks have good battery life, good quality but the Displays and gaming performance sucks.
I actually wanted to get the updated Envy 15 with core i5 520M and HD 5830 but apparently HP does not allow you to use the IGP to save battery life. With the slice they would offer an all day battery life or a thin notebook depending if you just need 4h on the university or 10h in the sun near lake. But I guess they were either just too stupid or they thought it would hurt the sales of the ridiculous Corei7 Quad Core Version if the cheaper core i5 had this significantly better battery life.

I am also hoping Apple sticks with 16:10 current unibody and that would soo much better. I need 15" because on 13" you cannot work properly and I don't have a desktop or any secondary PC.

Apple support is also much appreciated as the one from Samsung sucks. Furtunately I never needed it. I also had to find Windows 7 drivers by myself because Samsung only offers XP support. I plan to install Linux, Windows and OSX on a new MBP.

I wouldn't buy the MBP just for OSX but I also never tried it for more than 40 mins at a time. I really hate most Apple programs for windows. Itunes and Safari are IMO the slowest progams with the most useless resource hungry features ever. But I already figured out that using OSX does not mean I have to use any of those. Also at least itunes might work better under OSX than under Windows. In Windows it is about as good as Mediaplayer 7-9. Even 10 and 11 were better and 12 is in a different league. Although foobar is my favourite because it can do simple task just the way you want and so much faster.
I know enough about the OSX interface to know that I can work with it although I change it a little, but I do this to Windows 7 too. The standard Windows interface sucks but with a few little extras you can have anything.
Kubuntu and OSX have some stuff that you have to add in Windows which is nice, on the other hand some of OSX GUI is also too graphical, mouse oriented and inefficient for my taste. I wouldn't say it is better but I can change it to my needs like I did with Windows.
I guess if you know enough about IT stuff you can work with a lot if you have the option individualization.

To sum it up I think I want an MBP because it has the most complete combination of features or comes closest to my dream notebook. Also price is less of an issue for me because I work so much with my notebook that I can justify paying 3 times more than anybody in my family for this item. I am neutral towards OSX as I think for the most part I can work as well and fast with it as with windows.

Aluminum unibody and OS X are the main reasons. It's so easy to open it up, and replace things yourself if needed as well (can't say that of other laptops).

The reason i wanted a mac is i wanted to try something new, i got bored of windows always worrying about virus and walmare and all that things , i really loved the macbook pro once i saw it was the most beautyful computer i ever seen coming from pc all the computer look the same , plus i love that fact that apple handle the hardware and software makes the computer unique , last but not least the customer sevice is the best i ever had every time i call apple not only do they handle you very polite sometime they give you free stuff :D , what can i say i just love being a :apple: fan

I'd love both!:p

But honestly, the current show I'm working on is all on esata drives, so I have no real choice just yet, though I am trying to get them to allow me to use a firewire 800 since the show is all lo-res media anyway.
