While I can understand the calls to choose a local credit union, I'm curious about their online capabilities.

I use US Bank and love, love, love, their online service and bill pay. My memories of my local credit union—from just a few years back when I got a car loan—was that their online service was subpar.

So if you do use a local credit union, how do you rank their online services?

I work for a credit union here in WI. It is one of the largest CU's in the state. Our online services are excellent. We have the standard online services (check account balances, move money between checking and savings, transfer money to make loan payments), BillPay, online loan applications, e-statments, you can design your debit card online, change your PIN, order checks, and my personal favorite, remote check deposit (rather than going to a branch to deposit a physical check, you use your smart phone, take a picture of the front and the back of the check, and the funds are deposited to your account). We also have a stand alone smart phone app that has the majority of these capabilities along with an ATM locator, branch locator, etc. We are definitely ahead of the curve in comparison to other CU's when it comes to online services and capabilities.

One other nice thing we have...instant issue debit cards. We can print out debit cards right in our branches - you get a debit card right on the spot rather than having to wait "7-10 business days" to receive it in the mail.

Why I Dumped Wells Fargo

I was with a local bank, that was bought out by Wachovia, who was bought out by Wells Fargo
I dumped Wells Fargo about a year ago and went with my Credit Union
Best decision ever

Wow.

Similar to my story, but mine was a bit more severe.

Had two cases of credit card fraud with my bank. While they fixed the first one (granted, it was in 2000), I had that mark on my record. I was living in Las Vegas, while a $4000 purchase of 3 laser printers, dinner, and $200 in gas were made in Simi Valley, California; 350 miles away. Took 3 weeks to get that resolved. Funny thing is, I had the card used on me the entire time.

The second one, which was the kicker for me (outside of my home mortgage getting screwed over by them) was when I had $600 worth done out of state, and I had the card on me. Because of that, that they didn't just allow me to make purchases; they canceled the card without notifying me, which really would have sucked if I were out of town and had no access to my account.

Furthermore, when I did travel with that account, because I had made a purchase outside of my "normal purchasing area" they put a hold on all purchases until I called to figure out why my card was declined. Only then would they allow the purchases to go through... again, "for my protection".

I moved everything from said bank to my local CU. I had to keep the account open, unfortunately, so I could handle mortgage payments. But because I moved all my business off of it, including my direct deposits from work, they charge $15/month in maintenance fees to keep the account open.

Now that they've sold my mortgage (again, without notifying me) to another institution, I'm walking over to said bank and closing my accounts.

BL.

The complaining about selling of mortgages is very interesting to me. If you think your bank down the street is going to keep it in house, you're being very naive.

Not at all. But one expect some notification of if and when they are going to sell the account and who the next point of contact would be; not anything from the new entity servicing the account. the buyer/homeowner shouldn't be the last person to know.

In this case, I was.

There are requirements on how soon you have to be notified. If you were notified too late, you're entitled to be compensated. Feel free to look into that.

Nice.

I want a debit card with kitties.

Seriously.

My credit card offers everything you listed - with the exception of design your own debit card (but they do have instant issue debit cards too) in their online banking, but the interface is pretty antiquated. But still, it gets the job done.

I have my bank accounts, car loan and mortgage through them, and there's no way I'd switch back to a big bank for a prettier online interface.

Great for me. Bill Pay, Transfers, eDeposit...my needs aren't too much.

My credit union's online banking services are vastly superior to what Wells Fargo offered me.
The interface for bill pay is simpler, more intuitive and far more powerful.
And the other online services are broader and far better.
I put off the move for a long time because I didn't want the hassle, but in reality, there was no hassle in the transition.
I wish I had moved much sooner.

Local credit union here as well.

Although, one thing being proposed is to have the USPS offer banking services and if this becomes a reality, I may very well consider opening account there.

Credit Union.

Mine has an app to deposit the one or two paper checks I receive each year and I pay all bills online.

Was a BoA customer for a long time but the petty fees for this and that drove me to CU.

Lol, it can be done pretty easily here! You're allowed you use any (appropriate) image for your debit card.

Plus we have instant issue debit card machines right in our branches. AND we have a couple branches open on Sundays.

SO, if you went out Saturday night and lost your debit card, you could walk into a branch on a Sunday and get a brand new card issued to you right on the spot. Try to do THAT at a bank (or most other credit unions). :)
