I am deeply conflicted on this topic--I've been happy with the coverage on my VZW phones for many years, but increasingly unhappy at their slowness in releasing new phones. A few years back, I had VZW's best ever smartphone, the XV6000, apparently just another name slapped onto one of HTC's Windows Mobile phones.
About sixteen months ago, VZ "upgraded" their data network, and required me to update the firmware on my phone. Well, the firmware upgrade never worked correctly, and I was not alone, as many on user forums had the same problem. So I bit the bullet and got a new Treo 700WX. Imagine my shock and dismay when I found that this "new" phone had a radically slower speed than my old one. And of course, I had the typical problems migrating my 3rd party apps over, some of which have never been resolved at all, after all this time. Basically, the Treo 700WX is a terrible phone, and suffers from the problems of being underpowered, and (just like the Palm OS phones), is a phone pasted onto a PDA platform, rather than being designed from scratch as a cell phone/PDA/music player.
OTOH, I cannot believe that a new second version of the iPhone is STILL being released without A2DP. And the third party app situation for iPhone won't be clear to us for another few weeks now. IF the third party app situation is relatively good, I may bite the bullet and jump, notwithstanding my misgivings--although how well Apple/AT&T are going to cope with in-store activation and porting my phone number is another nightmare to which I am not looking forward.
If a SlingPlayer app is there, and a port of the old Palm e-reader is available (so all my old e-books don't turn into orphans), I may take the jump--especially if somebody gives me some reason to believe that A2DP might be made available later through a firmware update.
I do wish I had a more clear idea as to what to expect from Android later on this year--that may be the first platform to give Apple a run for its money, since it too will be designed from scratch--over the long haul that may be the way to go, I suspect..I know I'm downloading their SDK when I get back from vacation...
