I'll be heading off to college next year and will be working towards a Bachelors of Science Degree in Computer Science. I want to be a software engineer.

It's a good choice. There are a lot of jobs in the field and it seems like more and more keep coming.

As for me I'll be graduating in 6 weeks with a BS in Computer Engineering. Really looking forward to being done with school.

Sorry to hear your dream won't work out.

New doors, of which you have yet to realize, have just opened for you.

The hard part will be choosing which ones to go through. :)
I agree. It's just crazy because I've always had a set plan all my life, and having the plan pulled out from under my feet is a little bit of a shocker.

is there another field of medicine that might interest you?

You know, I've been thinking about it (A LOT) and think I really want to help people. I know that's what most doctors do, though, I would like to help people that don't really have the help available in other countries, etc.

Hi Chandler,

I'm really sorry to hear what happened to you, but I've always believed that God never closes a door without opening a window. It's really great that you want to help people, as opposed to being solely concerned with money, and that'll stand to you hugely in the long run.

A couple of suggestions I'd like to make would include teaching, guidance councelling, and medicinal chemistry. They are all ways to help people, and can make a huge difference in the lives of others.

Another idea that's come to mind is pharmacy. It's very medically oriented, and it'll allow you to help lots of people. You'll be working with people on a daily basis, not just helping them with their medication, but also with various personal issues. Most pharmacists I've met have been very warm and friendly people, so if this sounds like it'll suit you go ahead and give it a shot.

I really hope things work out for you, whatever you decide to do. Good luck!

you could easily do that without doing surgery, if that's what you really want to do.

personally: b.s. biology, b.a. psychology

planning for: pharmd, to help people too. :)

Sounds like fun!

My theory is if someone finds law school fun, and there is a small percentage of those, they will hate the practice of law since there is no connect with law school according to every lawyer, professor, and intern I have ever talked to. Unfortunatley, of people who hated the LSAT, Law School, and the practice of Law, the latter is the one people almost always hate the most.

I hope to have faith at the end of the day I can be an advocate helping society instead of a shark or ambulance chaser.

A prosecutor, defense attorney, judge, contracts attorney, real property attorney, judicial clerk, court stenographer, law professor, lobbyist, or pro-bono attorney can all do good, but it is of my opinion from talking to many lawyers that this concept is quite rare in real life.

Congrats Kainjow. I remember you back from 2000 on macrumors and you have come a long way.

I believe you are absolutely right.
You know, ever since this all happened, I've had this HUGE (even bigger than before) urge to become a doctor. Before, I also wanted to help people, though I was always concerned that being an oral surgeon wasn't really as much help as I wanted to do. A lot of times, I wouldn't be saving anyones life, I would just make it better with that career. Now with that being out of the picture, it was OBVIOUS what I wanted to do. The day after, I sat in my room for probably 5 hours just thinking, and when this came to mind, I had hope again.
I still don't know what type of doctor I'll go for.. I guess family practice, but whatever it is, I know I'll do some good with it.

I agree about pharmacists as well! They are always so nice! If it comes down to that, that wouldn't be a bad choice at all.

Wow.

But short sentences can be good. :p Way too much of what I have to read in my studies has (unnecessarily) loooooong sentences.

Nope. YOU read the looooooong sentences. You WRITE short sentences.

Law school sucks thorough and thorough.

63dot, I remember you talking about going to Santa Clara University? Are you there now? Or in another school?

I thought about it for both MBA and law school but it's two+ hours one way when there is traffic present but 1/1/2 hours if there is no traffic. A little too much driving for me. I used to drive farther for that for two classes up in the city and it was brutal. Northern Cal drivers suck and make LA drivers look good. :)

So what school are you in now?

Hastings rocks, a full on national top tier school. For me, I go to some unknown regional T3 not anywhere in the league of a Hastings ;)

As you probably know, Hastings was started by former Harvard and Yale law professors who wanted to make the absolute top notch law school on the west coast which would draw from the knowledge and traditions of the best legal minds the east coast had to offer. The head of Hastings, as has been the case a lot of the time in its history, is a member of the original Hastings family.

If I had to compare a fraternity to Hastings, it would the the Skull and Bones of Yale. No law school on the west coast has Hastings' connections as you will find out in three years.

Three schools in the USA come to mind in the statement: "It's' not what you know, but WHO you know."

Those three schools are:

Harvard
Yale
Hastings

I have a B.A. in Sociology/Anthropology

Going back to school for a B.S. in Computer Science.

Done a B.A. in Economics & Politics years ago, and have just completed a Barrister-at-Law degree, so maybe in a couple of years I'll see if I can go to a PHD without the necessity of doing a Masters

I'm a bit tired of studying though and will take a break for a while.

Bachelor of Science in Media Arts and Design with a Concentration in Digital Video and Cinema Studies and a Minor in Criminal Justice
