I always get lyrics from my favorite songs.

My most recent 4G 20GB was "You're just jealous 'cause I'm young and in love." from the Brand New song "Soco Amaretto Lime." I feel it necessary to say that it still sold on eBay for a large sum of money. Even more than most of the unengraved used iPods.

My new black 5G 60GB, which I'm going to order tonight or tomorrow, depending on when the PayPal transfer for the money from my old iPod gets into my bank account, will be "I need you so much closer. So come on, come on." from the Death Cab For Cutie song "Transatlanticism."

Problly cause your quote would fit other people to.

my engraving

I wish we didn't have the choice to engrave -- it took me 1 1/2 hours to come up with something witty! I wanted to do something linux-geeky, and came up with a bunch of silly ones that were too long, then settled on something simple but effective:

/dev/null

after thinking of it, these might have been good too:
/media/ipod
/dev/ipod
/dev/music
/dev/pwn463
/dev/roxorz

but i'm happy with my /dev/null -- that is, if it'll ever leave "Preparing shipment" and get here already!

"Don't Panic" is awesome too -- very nice

hmmm I play piano and I dont get the part about not playing a note untill you have a reason to play it. Go with before you play two notes learn to play one. Im also thinking it would be sweet if you could get pictures or symbols engraved.

It's a quote from the genius that is Mark Hollis lead singer of Talk Talk.
If you listen to the last few Talk Talk albums and his solo album you'll understand what it means.
Apple does let you do symbols etc for large company orders I think.

I'm considering this for my new 30GB video iPod. "I see you...put it down and walk away." Or maybe, "instant gratification vs. delayed gratification...oh well" Or just simply, "iCandy" :)

I got 'iRusty' on it...for reasons obvious to those that named me when I was born. I thought I was sooo cool...until I suffered nano-envy and realised that unless I can find another Rusty my iPod mini has zero resale value.

In fact, I think I'd make a good rumour site all on my own, here's my take:
- Rusty buys flashy new apple product
- Exactly 3 weeks later Apple updates product to something cooler.

Happened with both my iPod mini and powerbook. I was used to it in PC land because new stuff would come out almost weekly, but with Apple sometimes only updated things once a year it has more 'grrrrrr' factor. :p

How many people were warning you about not buying a powerbook? I recall me being one of those

"engraved is spelt with an E"

or

"I got rejected by Anna Nicole Smith" - nobody wants to have an iPod that says just how big a failure they really are.

"Last week I had SARS."

"You have to ask yourself, did he wash his hands?"

"sasser, blaster, iloveyou, melissa and mydoom inside/ plug me in, I dare ya"

In the unlikely event I'm eating in a restaurant and I have to toss my ipod in a black garbage bag due to an armed robbery, I can grab the robber (aka "Ringo"), whip out my gun, and ask him to pull it out of the bag. When asked which one is mine? I can respond: It's the one with Bad M_____ F______ on it (a la Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction) :D

Is it:

I'd have to get it in black though, otherwise it just wouldn't be the same. :D

And, was it a major hassle convincing the guy to put it on? Because I don't want to have my 'rents order it (my christmas present!) and have the order rejected… :O

I put my name and home page. If I ever lose my iPod (or have it stolen) I will add a Please Return note, with contact info, to that home page. That way even if I move or change phone numbers, the engraving on my iPod will always lead to the latest contact info.

As a planned theft deterrent it's minor--but to help me find my iPod if I lose it, it's nice peace of mind. Most people are honest enough not to steal an iPod, not when they know the owner's name and know that a simple email is all it takes to get it back to them.

Plus I have a note in my Notes section asking to please return it, and giving my phone number.

I don't expect to sell it: 60 GB of extra backup space is never going to be useless. Plus it can give business presentations to TV in a pinch, and makes a nice spare boombox when I plug in speakers. I'll keep it even after I get a new iPod (no hurry there).

(I might give/loan it to friends or family, but my name on the back won't bother them.)

I would consider "Don't steal music from the rich and sell to the poor." :)

"For music, PTO"?

No, seriously, I put my name, and email address on it (I could be really unlucky, and it gets found by a spammer!). I was going to put my phone number on it as well, but then imagined getting a phone call sometime "Hey buddy, is your phone really nice as well <evil laugh>" :D

My iPod (a 3rd gen 15GB model) was purchased the first day they came out, and before engraving was an option in Canada. However my Dad's christmas present this year (5th gen 30GB-white) will say "To: Dad's Name, love your two boys". My brother and I are splitting on one this year... it's shaping up to be an expensive Christmas! But my Dad really can use one on long trips.

I got the 5th gen the first day they came out too, it's been sitting in a drawer of mine for about a month now, so far I've managed not to open it. <nervously looks at calendar> 10 days to go! :D
