Nobody is saying they like it for making phone calls. Does that mean most people do not have cellular?

You can take/make calls even on GPS versions, as long as phone is near by.

That said, I've only taken one call with the GPS watch, while driving (no Bluetooth in the car). Worked well enough, near as I can tell. Only issue is that volume on the speaker was a bit low even at highest setting, imo. Person on the other end had no issues hearing me.

I answer calls on it and I don't have cellular. One nice thing is if someone is trying to make a Facetime video call to you you're still able to answer with audio-only on your watch. I prefer answering on my phone but if it's not near or my hands are full answering on the watch is a nice backup!

@SW3029,

The current generation S4 Nike+ 44mm that I own, along with S5 users the thickness worry can be put to rest. The S3 that was thick and obviously so!

your use cases will match similarly yet differ as many of ours. As a kid growing up I had but 3 digital watches (classic models far too expensive for me to own): Casio's calculator watch (circa 1984 black), PacMan watch (yeah the OG with the plastic extension to the built-in joystick), and one I think was like R-Type side scroller yet cannot even find a pic on the net of it.

I use my non-LTE S4 Nike+ for the following:
Date/Time
Alarm Clock (all 5 are on my iPhone 1 on the watch just in case)
Reminders for work tasks.
Health: Apple Activity, Strong! (StrongApp - for my workouts), MyFitnessPal (nutritional entry/log which incorporates into AppleHealthKit just like Strong! does), Heart beat health BPM as well as monitoring how hard it's been working that I'm in the worst shape of my life (too much KFC, McD's, etc).
SMS/iMessage glances, maybe a short reply.
tracking notes in meeting minutes
timer - for laundry (Wash/Dry cycles)
Time - in shower to ensure I'm not running late to work
Shazam - great for playing music through another app on iPhone and the microphone on WatchOS picks it up.

Music Playback - during my workouts at the gym ... one of my top 3 pillars for purchasing and owning a watch was to listen to music during my workouts. Phone normally stays in the locker; locked up.
Strong! - track my workouts set by set, rest by rest, exercise by exercise! I don't use pen/paper like I used to over a decade ago. Love how this app syncs with the iOS app of same name and tracks everything for more in-depth look at my progress/failures/challenges.

I really wish there was a way I could incorporate the Breath app into my rest periods of my workouts, in-between sets. Would be nice to see just how helpful that could be to better heart health.

1 last small yet BIG thing.

Breathe!
- When this app was introduced, my arrogance laughed hysterically when I watched that particular Apple Event. Since getting my S3 and now S4 ... I cannot tell you just how astronomically important a quick few deep controlled and mentally focused breaths can bring to your inner-mind/self/being when you have a stressful job, life, and dealing with other annoyances. This one app, like the workout app has saved me countless times from just becoming a raging animal and loosing it!

Mental Health, is just as important as physical health: many of us just do not realize how important!

Cellular is probably the least popular option with consumers for the Apple Watch, not because it’s not a ‘useful’ feature, because carriers are charging ~$13/$14 more a month simply for that feature alone, and it doesn’t really provide a core purpose to be used as frequently for that cost alone.

If you do a lot of running and don't want to lug your phone around with you then getting the cellular version makes sense (this probably applies to other sports too, like cycling?). If your phone is always nearby then you can get the cheapest aluminum version, or get any other version and simply not activate the cellular.

My daughter trains for half-marathons and finds the cellular version very handy, so she doesn't have to carry her phone. I do not train for any races, so I just have the least expensive one.

The most surprising and useful feature that I found was that I don't miss phone calls anymore. I keep my phone in my pocket, but I would frequently miss the vibrations and not get a call. With the watch, it is hard to miss the vibrations on my wrist, and I have found that to be super handy. I'm old fashioned, though, I still answer with the phone itself, not the watch.

The other problem with using cellular is that it won’t work on both Sims, if you use the dual sim facility of the phone as I do. Also there are so few networks that support Apple Watch, especially on PAYG. I had 3 months free trial with Vodafone Spain, but gave up as it would never send and receive texts and iMessages reliably, making and receiving calls was very hit or miss as well. I won’t be spending the extra on cellular again until it works well/properly with most networks.

I use it for calls all the time. I tried to keep my post to a minimum. I didn't want to list every single thing I do with the watch.

Agree. Reduce it to $5 a month and many more will get it and the carriers will end up making more money. Very stupid.
(In my country my monthly watch cellular is very cheap so I always opted for cellular version and activate it)

if you have AirPods you’ll find accepting phone call on a watch, or even on a phone but through AirPods is kind of natural.

Got tired of using a chest strap every time I want to do cardio, so I love it. Seems pretty accurate compared to the strap. I hated using the Apple Watch before because the display would keep turning off, but exercise + AOD = amazing.
