Hard to tell. I know that mine is working, because I get over 500MB/s reads and writes with my SSD, without any freezes or beachballs. My system is very stable and everything is running as it should.

What speeds should I get using a SATA 3 7200 RPM standard HDD?

Whether it's SATA 3, 2 or 1 makes no difference. A 7200RPM traditional hard disk will not saturate any SATA interface. You're lucky if you manage to push over 100MB/s. eg, XBench reports my 7200RPM drive gets under 87MB/s for uncached write (highest speed reported). Even SATA 1 should be able to push 150MB/s. Far more than what you would expect even the fastest HDD to output.

EDIT: My XBench speeds are likely lowered artificially as I am running Fusion and Firefox concurrently with the disk test. However the point still stands.

I have a 17 2011 MBP I have tried Intel 510, OCZ Vertex max iops, Crucial M4, All of them would stutter.
Not always immediate but eventually I would get beach balls as well as the disk not found on boot now and then. I really wanted more space I had been running a 160Gb x25 INTEL with no issues since day 1.
Even though I have heard issues with the 320 (firmware in 2 weeks, fingers crossed) I went for the 320. Its not as fast as the SATA 3 but 600gb of SSL love is not bad.
My 2 cents.

Where did you do this disc speed test?

It hangs waiting on the SSD which shows up as beach balls in OS X.

It doesn't happen all the time, very sporadic, but enough that it's annoying.
The hang can last between 2 sec and 1 minute.

I love the speed of the SSD but if I had to buy right now I'd either get a 15" high rez MBP and a 6G or a 17" with a 3G SSD.

If at all possible I'd wait for a 17" machine where Apple has fixed the issue.

If comments on OWC's blog entry are any indication, most have issues with a 6G SSD in the 17".

I am having this same EXACT issue with my Kingston HyperX SSD as seen in this thread:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1213115/

And even before I enabled TRIM it was doing this (which is why I enabled it, thinking it would help). Although I'm not having any issues with getting good speed (as I have 6gb/s negotiated speed on the HDD bay, but unfortunately only 3gb/s on the Optibay :(), it sucks having to wait for the beach balls to go away...

Which is why I think this problem is an OS X problem, because I'm having no problem with Boot Camp!

500 MB/s+ read, about 420+ write!!! ;) But MAN is it flaky as hell on OS X!

Did you do a fresh install of OSX when you installed the SSD? When I installed mine, I used carbon copy cloner at first. System ran well, but not as fast as I expected.
After doing a fresh install it worked noticeably better. Especially the boot up time, It booted about 3 times faster.

Boot camp in general is a different story. In OSX, the 6G SSD's run in AHCI mode, in Windows 7 however the run in IDE mode. So you'll never reach the full speed in Windows 7.
FYI here is a guide how to enable AHCI in Windows 7. Enabling it will bring several problems though.

You can get it from the MacAppstore

SL or Lion?

Lion.

And I did a clean install, and reinstalled after that. Enabled/disabled TRIM. Did everything.

SSD works fine with bootcamp. I don't know how I couldn't be achieving the high speeds, it's pretty damn fast.... I have a feeling it's a firmware issue. On what? I don't know... could be the SSD, MBP or Lion's just buggy still with non Apple SSD's. Tried all optimizations. Even accessing the SSD from my other Lion HDD in my Optibay makes the regular HDD freeze up. But not with Windows.

Hmmm...Any chance to try a different 6G drive? Vertex 3 works great for me. The HyperX was just released, so it is possible that you're issues will be addressed with a firmware update.
If I remember it correctly, the Crucial M4 had similar issues, which were resolved with firmware 002.

About bootcamp, you should run a disk speed test in Windows and post you're results. You should be getting 200-250MB/s, instead of 500MB/s.

So your Vertex 3 worked perfectly on your 17"? Did you try OWC? OWC says it is not just there SSD but when I heard stories like yours I have hope.

Yep, still no issues at all. Just try one form OWC, it's the best choice. If it doesn't work, you can still get your money back.

I am one of the lucky 2011 17in owners that the crucial M4 firmware 2 did not fix. Same beach balls and occasional loss of hard drive at boot. I tried the shield for the drive cable cable too. I settled on a big SATA 2 drive and its still super fast ~12 sec from power button to desktop.:)

Which Sata 2 drive you get? :)

I settled on the Intel 320 600gb.
its not as fast as the sata 3 but it is fast. and Intel says 2 weeks for firmware fix for the 8mb bug.

Kingston says it's a Lion problem, there's no firmware anytime soon for HyperX. Guess that's why everyone's having problems with SATA III.

Not everyone is having trouble with their 6G SSD's. Most problems have been solved, except for those with a bad 17" MBP.
Mine runs perfectly on Lion, and on SL before.

Well I am lucky. My 2011 17 MBP will not work with with SATA 3 in SL or Lion. Apple tested it and found nothing wrong. They say if I use an unsupported drive they can not fix it when it works perfect with their drives so nothing is wrong. I give up, I need to use my laptop vs fight Apple. I settled with my 600gb Intel 320 SSD
:(

I took my MBP into a genius today and they told me the SAME exact thing.

It's pretty dumb IMO... Who cares if THEY didn't sell the SSD to me, I bought the MBP from them AND Applecare... I sort of expect a higher level of support at least. I don't expect them to replace anything for me.

Alright I installed the OCZ 6G hard drive...so far nothing wrong but I do not know if these speeds are correct. Some others have posted in here around 500 MBPS for both read in write but my OCZ is going up to this...does this sound right?

If it was bad what would I notice exactly?

How is this bad at all? Those are excellent speeds. You can't always believe the exact numbers that benchmarks give you, some are more accurate than others but not all are precise. There's nothing wrong with your SSD :) Consider yourself lucky.

Well that is why I am asking. I mean I know it is supposed to be in the 500's...and other people have posted in the 500's so I thought perhaps being in the 400's is not correct?:p

If you think about it, you're running tests on the drive that you're currently using, which means that those speeds aren't the true speeds of the drive, rather the "real world" speeds. If you want to know the true speeds, you'll want a better benchmark software and a way to test the drive from a different drive. :D
