Ahhh that is sort of my point. What is excode? Power hungr apps? I'm a construction guy. Dumb me down some.

Why exactly are you wanting a macbook air? Nothing wrong with the choice but it may not be close to what you are needing exactly ...

Some really nice windows laptops with a reasonable amount of memory ( 4 gb / 6 gb ) in the 500 dollar range and under.

Ugh. Its a big decision. This will be my setup for 4 years minimum. I want it all to play well together. Thanks!

I assume if I want to stream netflix to my cheap 32" 4 year old flatscreen TV I'll buy a wireless router?

I know I'm a bit late but, the Apple wireless keyboard is fantastic. The keys are white so even if it's a bit dark you can still see them. If you really need some light you can get something like a Kindle reading light that you van clamp on if you're on the couch.

The mouse takes a bit getting used to but, you can use gestures right on the mouse. That, you won't get with any other 3rd party mouse.

At first I really didn't like it but now I honestly live it.

As for the monitor I have a 27" LG that looks and works perfectly.

My only gripe is when coming out of sleep or booting up it takes a few seconds longer to get to the desktop because of having to have to switch from the main screen to the LG, unless you keep the MBA as the primary screen and us the 27" as the secondary. But I realize that's not optimal.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

John you are 100% correct. But I made a rash decision and chose the Iphone 4S as my first smartphone and apple product. Now I'm hooked.

as everyone!

for your needs, 2 gb will be fine. RAM is only needed for parallel or 'heavy' uses, none of which corresponds with ur scenario. u want base 11, u don't need anymore. go for it. it will serve u as long as u want!

I got the base 2011 Air before Christmas for £600 from ebay, only 3 months old, it hasn't let me down at all and is a lovely machine. Performs better than my old Macbook Pro with 4GB RAM did anyway, if your not editing large photos, writing code, or into music production, then the base 2011 Air will be totally fine for your needs.

Thanks everyone. The $799 on is a 2010 brand new in the box. I'm going to go buy the 2011 base from the Apple store. I will report back from the new machine. It should be interesting... I went for years and never really learned how to run my pc. just didn't need to. I am basically a 41 year old beginner to computers.

On the other hand, the iphone wasnt hard to figure out.

The US refurb store now has 2011 refurbs available. They have the 4GB/128GB option for $999. I'm having a hard time not buying it so if you do, maybe Apple will run out of stock so I can stop hovering over the Buy button. :D

Wow this thing sure is slick.

I have enabled homesharing. When I plug my iPhone 4s into this new mac it says it won't work because i need iTunes 10.5 or higher. but the iTunes is up to date. what gives?

Please start a new thread in a more appropriate sub forum for this question.

Post the exact error message, screenshot if possible.

SSD + 2GB ram is more than 90% of users need for smooth computing. Does me and I'm a programmer.

As far as mouse, keyboard, and monitor go, I'd reccommend buying a non-Apple keyboard and mouse. Monitor, just get a good priced, well-reviewed model. Check out Logitech for your keyboard and mouse. They sell some Mac-specific models, and even some of the Windows models have Mac drivers. You CAN use a Windows keyboard with a Mac. I do it everyday with my Logitech G19. The Windows key is Command, Alt is Option, and holding F12 will eject a disk (if you buy an external DVD drive).

glad you got your MBA sorted
id love one, but only got my MBP 2010 earlier in the year and to be honest there is nowt wrong with it

but in a couple of years time im hoping to get one :)

good luck buddy
