AT&T is only becoming, or trying to appear as becoming, competitive, probably because they realize they are losing sole control over the iPhone.

Which I don't think he could ... given that he has a 2G iPhone, thus they couldn't change his plan to a 3G Unlimited/$30 plan given that his phone can't utilize that network. That's just my guess ... just like they won't strap on a data plan to a non-data utilizing cell phone.

Thus, if he wants the $30 unlimited plan, he'll have to buy a 3G/3GS now with the $30 plan, and then cancel/upgrade early when the new phone comes out.
:apple:

I wonder if he can switch it online by login into his account.
Or if he can borrow an iphone 3G or 3GS and stick his sim for a minute and add the $30 data and switch the sim back to his 2G iphone.
Possible IMO.

Well, i just realized that one reason my data usage may be so high for 2G user is because I am ALWAYS on EDGE (my wifi card died about a year ago). So once I have functioning wifi, my ATT network usage should decrease quite a bit :)

No 3G or wifi?!? Buy the new iPhone add texting, and gladly spend $10 more a month.

I just found this interesting piece of info on the att website

What data plans are available for my original iPhone?

Question:
What data plans are available for my original iPhone?
What are my options for text messaging on my original iPhone?
Answer:
All original iPhone plans include Visual Voicemail and Unlimited Data – email and web – and 200 SMS Text Messages. You can add more text messages for an additional monthly fee. For plan details, please visit AT&T Cell Phone Plans.

Data Plans for Individuals
Unlimited – $20.00 per month
1500 Messages – $15.00 per month
200 Messages – $5.00 per month

Data Plans for FamilyTalk
Unlimited – $30.00 per month
Pay Per Use – $0.20 per text message (if a text message plan is not selected)

I am on a family talk but still have the 20 per month plan I wonder if the 30 per month family talk plan they speak of is the same iphone 3g/3gs unltd plan that will be grandfathered in

ABSOLUTELY :D That is exactly my plan! Can't wait for the new iPhone!!!
I was just hoping to somehow retain an unlimited data plan without having to jump through any hoops before Monday...

Speaking of texting... do you guys believe the 'increments' for texts will be the same and just offered on each of the new data plans?

texting hasn't been included with data plans since the original iphone. It will be sold in packages of 200, 1500, and unltd texts for $5, $15, and $20 respecitvely. This is in addition to whatever data plan you get.

It just makes no sense to try and get an unlimited plan for $30. The $25 plan will be just as unlimited in your case. You aren't hitting 1GB of data and your wifi is broken. If you want to spend more money, you can paypal me $5 every month.

None of the 3G plans have texting, so you'll be paying for that now.

This might clear up everyone's problems:

If you have an original iPhone, and are still using the $20/month unlimited data plan, you can get a new smartphone and be grandfathered in with an unlimited plan (though you'll pay $30/month, and you can't get tethering).

Hooray! That's what I wanted to hear. My new iPhone with Unlimited Data for $22.80 (with FAN discount) is well worth the <$3 dollar difference from the $19 (assuming $25 2GB plan with FAN discount). Thanks! I can rest easy now :D

Me too! I am glad, but I wonder where gizmodo got the info though... Anyone know?

:( wow. Sorry to offend you.

I was thinking more along the lines of if i don't have a phone that is so slow, then maybe I will use it more? My <1 gb usage is with only email and IM apps. Zero video streaming or anything heavy. 2-fold increase does not seem like a rediculous amount to increase usage with a new phone that will be so much faster and be able to do things my old phone can't. And I do not have wi-fi at home, although I do at work and am there most of the time. But maybe I'm completely wrong... Plus, isn't it possible that the new phone may have capabilites that uses more data (i.e. iChat)?

I would gladly pay $5/month for unlimited vs 2 GB if given the opportunity so I don't have to worry about getting close to the limits.

I realize that texting is additional. That is what I (apparently inaccurately) was trying to get across with the "increments". I apologize for the confusion

You won't need more than 2GB of data even when you are doing all that stuff. You will be able to get the unlimited plan, but keep a close eye on your data. $5 each month adds up. You could afford wireless, spend the ocassional $10 for emergancy data, and still save a lot of money in two years.
