Over the years of my computing life, I can honestly say that Maxtors have failed more for me than any other brand. Next is Hitachi. Seagate/Samsung/Toshiba/Fujitsu at the top for me.

I would pic Maxtor.

WD was recently being sued and I believed they settled, due to consumers complaining that WD (IDE)hard drives that were being sold as "new" where refurbished or used.

I have had a couple Maxtor drives go bad on me - they where the only brand drives to go bad on me come to think about it.

Have had several of both
Have had good luck w/ both
I'm currently running 3 Raptors, 1 of which I bought way back when they first came out, the other 2 later on.

OTOH, I am still using a 6GB Maxtor that came with my B&W G3 from early '99.....and it still runs like a champ (as a maintenance/back-up drive) even though it's been in & out of 6 different machines many many times and who knows how many software changes, reformats, etc etc..........

go figure :p

I repair both PCs and Macs at work and I have replaced every single manufacturer's drives. I personally have been buying WDs for my own systems even when I have an issue they are very quick to replace the drive no fussing. My current laptop has a WD scorpion 120gb it has the best features for the price I paid.

I went WD mostly cause of the sound quality of the drive. I don't know if you are concerned about sound but i bought a new 250GB WD for use in a HTPC because the seek sound was very low. The newer seagates (while nice) really suck for any sort of seek sound quality. I also have two 160GB drives that i use for backup of my iMac and iBook.
