I use mine only for surfing the internet, upload PDF files, visualziar email the company, Youtube.

I tried to edit files in Notes, but not, as I have no keyboard is very difficult to use.
Use notes web icloud by Windows and then only use to view the ipad

I use mine for browsing web, reading ebooks, writing documents, email, note keeping, reminders, calendar, buying movie tickets, shopping Amazon and other internet sellers, do my invoices, watching YouTube....

Actually, it's probably faster to list things I still do on my iMac. There are only two things -- manage my media library, and general file storage/backups.

My iPad Pro is my primary computer, though I decided to see how AU and lowering the processor works for the SP3 heat, fans, and battery life so I'll be using that for a couple days to see.

Do let us know how that goes, I for one am genuinely interested.

I use my iPad Air 2 for everything I don't have to worry about lugging my 15" rMBP also I bought a Logitech Keyboard to go. Both of them are much like 11inches MBA.

The typical Apple bashers need a new slur for this thread. The "dust catcher" slur has been worn out. Better question is why do so many people frequent a forum to continually bash a company they supposedly hate.

To answer the OP question, I use my 12.9 Pro for many things and my macbook pro less since getting the iPad Pro. I have owned several iPad's before this one but the added screen space is the difference for me. Oddly enough, some people prefer a laptop. Some people prefer an iMac desktop. Apple makes different products to suit different peoples needs. Oh, the horror.

We are not Apple bashers, we are just ipad bashers. I love my imacs and macbook pros, so to answer your question, I am here to catch up on general apple and MacOS/OsX news.
I do own an ipad Air2 (my one and only ipad ever) but only use it to read the news at times, I use it so little that the finger print sensor is almost useless, as pretty much every time I switch it on I need to re-enter my passcode.

I guess I am fortunate I rarely have be on the go for my work, and I pretty much have a mac in some form around me all the time. As you said, apple makes different products to suit different peoples needs.

What do I use an iPad for? I use it to catch dust. Keeps that spot on my shelf clean.

lol that's what I am afraid of. Kinda waste of money..
[doublepost=1470310326][/doublepost]
Writing (Evernote, Scrivener, Ulysses), editing photos (Photos, Pixelmator), managing my iCloud photo library, family slide shows (Keynote), banking(Credit Union app), printing, email, web browsing (thread different web browsers), buying/selling on eBay/Etsy/Amazon, Pages, Numbers, School work on-line(College), gaming (Gigs of games), streaming music (Apple Music), buying and watching movies/tv shows, creating and managing my to do lists, calendars, and reminders, navigation on trips (I have a 4G/LTE model), programming, design and layout, 3-D printing, terminal connections (secure CRT), amateur radio, training (technical and physical), messaging, digital books, podcasts

The easier approach is to explain why I still have a laptop....

Because I haven't sold it yet.

I will do these things by Mac so I'm wondering if an iPad is necessary..
[doublepost=1470310479][/doublepost]I'm not that old so I didn't know about it lol

If you are happy doing those things on a Mac, then no, iPad isn't necessary. For me, ever since I got my first laptop, I kept wishing I could take the keyboard off and turn the screen to portrait. That's why I got in line to buy the iPad when they were first released. If you don't feel that way, then the iPad is likely to collect dust.

So basically imagine the iPad will do everything your old tablet used to do, probably just better. You might find that it can replace many functions of your Mac, but that will come down to you, your workflow, your needs etc. Plenty of discussions on this already, please read up.

Only you can decide what is useful in your life and which devices wil collect dust.

No I don't feel that way but I don't know why still I am longing for a new 9.7" iPad Pro thinking it may come handy sometime in my life. But for that few occasions to spend this much amount of money is insane and foolish which has kept me off the shelf so far from not upgrading to an iPad Pro. So mine is also likely going to keep lying idle and collecting dust yet I am buying it how nuts am I lol !!

I have a IPP 9.7.
When home I use it to surf, update FB, watch online shows, and FaceTime. Its synced with my IPhone so I use it for texting and phone calls. I just throw the phone one the shelf and leave it. I also play whatever music I wanna listen to. Its a lot easier than carrying my MBP from room to room or one side of the couch to the other like I used to.
My kid lives in another state so I got him one and we use it to do homework together. He's 10 and thinks it's cool when he writes in One Note I can see it while he's doing it. Finally found a way to get him to wanna do math.
At the gym I watch online shows while on the treadmill. And track my workouts.
I'm a network engineer and I tried to see if I could use it instead of my MBP. Most of the tools I use are web based so I'm able to do about 80% of everything. When I get a putty app Im pretty sure I'll be able to do all my work on it.
I come from a combo Windows/Android environment and dive into Apple this year. Went from PC, SP3, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab to MBP,IPP and iPhone. So far I love the MBP and IPP. I find new things I can do daily.

The 80s called and it wants its sarcastic phrase back.

Couldn't agree more with Night Spring.

Don't buy an iPad if you're just curious (unless you have the cash to blow) about what it might do. There are a myriad number of tasks my MacBook used to do but are now handled by the iPad - as well as Inge my MacBook could never do.

You're going to pay to power a system that uses 500 watts of power, isn't portable, costs more, to do the same thing that I do with a lighter, significantly lower power (2% of the electricity), less expensive system that uses software that costs less.

Hey, if you have a system right now, terrific. Or, if you have money to burn, terrific. I sold my laptop and offset the cost of my iPad and software. Not only did it not cost me anything, it cost me less to do the exact same stuff.

This doesn't work for everyone. I started in the "I have a laptop, why would I possibly want an iPad?" Then I got one... and stopped using my laptop because I just didn't need it anymore.

The thing that makes me mad about Apple, is lack of capability. If they put the "phone" app on my iPad, I wouldn't need a phone anymore (bluetooth headphones, bluetooth vehicle). There's just no reason for me to HAVE to have a phone. I can do it all with one device, and would prefer that.

Then I would get an Apple watch to replace the "portable" parts of the phone. NF/Apple pay, notification of calls/messages, etc...

The phone is an outdated concept at this point. Watch plus iPad replaces ALL the functionality. My laptop was an outdated tool/method because of the functionality of the iPad. I had to wait until the iPad Pro to get the power I needed. But it's happened. What I need from Apple is to cut out the cruft, or give me the ability to.

I think it's safe to say that you're in a very small minority with that view. I'm all for iPad replacing laptop for many people, but iPad replacing iPhone? You must have way bigger pants pockets than I do.

iPad mini as phone would work for me. As it is, I need a purse to carry my iPhone 6+ anyway, as the plus size phone doesn't fit in any of my clothes pockets.

That's absurd. With RARE exception I have my iPad with me all the time. Period. Places I don't take my iPad... bathroom, but I don't use a phone in the bathroom either.... uhm.... Amusement park? I could wear my watch and be notified of what is going on wirelessly, so the phone doesn't help there... What service does a phone provide me I can't get from the iPad, or Watch?

My point is this, why is carrying two device (one in a pocket and one out of it) better than carrying one device out of a pocket, and wearing the other, leaving your pocket empty?
