With very few exceptions, I think "pranks" are just about the worst form of "humor" possible.

The truest, best type of humor is essentially self-deprecating. An acknowledgment that one's own self- or own race, gender, species, etc. is fallible. And the best comedians and humorists, from Mark Twain and Shakespeare to Louis VK and Chris Rock - take advantage of that.

Pranks and April Fools day hijinks are the opposite of that. They usually set up some unsuspecting and innocent person to look foolish, usually through no fault of their own. They are the IED of the humor world. Urinate in your college roommate's shampoo bottle and laugh selfishly and spitefully when he notices something is wrong.

Pranks are essentially terrorism for people too cowardly to do the real thing, but are just as sick in the head.

Haven't played any April Fools jokes since I was at school. Do adults really do that sort of thing? Must be just across the pond I guess.
It's not an "across the pond thing" that I am aware of. Some seem to focus on it, I don't and I am across the pond.

One day, I think it would be hilarious to get a news agency ask "Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?", or report on a new series of thefts....
:D

I thought I'd surprise one of my coworkers on April Fool's Day by messing with the large bulletin board above his desk, which is full of reference notes. When he wasn't there I unpinned each item, rotated it 180 degrees, and re-pinned it in the same place.

It was that way all morning as he worked, but he didn't notice it until the late afternoon. He was momentarily confused when he looked up at a note and something was fishy about it. Then he realized what I'd done. I'd been listening all day for his reaction, and was glad when he finally said "you got me!"
