Thanks for the links. According to the KB page:

Which lead me to think that there might be particular directories or a lower bound to not defrag, but that doesn't make any sense with that iDefrag is telling me.

Linky - very good info describing HFS+ defragging. If anyone can explain to me why not all small files aren't actually defragged on my drive, I'll be willing to drop this defrag run here.

well that was an interesting read. a bit to far above my current knowledge for me to completely understand it. so ill let somebody else smarter talk about it haha!

nah meh dont worry about it. all files under 20mb are defragged by the OS automatically. anything bigger then that is too much effort and not worth it!

I wasn't aware that it did that—with whatever size files. Cool. Now one of these days I'll have to read the links you guys posted!

they are pretty intense

goodluck reading them haha!

I started the last one and I read a bit and skipped some parts I didn't need to know about. It wasn't too bad, but definitely draining. I suppose that is mostly because of awkward wording and the desire to talk about the fragmentation of forks instead of files—even though it seemed irrelevant to bother making the distinction for the sake of explanation. See that sentence could have fit in there perfectly! I got the gist of it, and I remember what I read, so I guess that's good. :)

Thanks, guys!

Like:

Cocoa
Dual-head support
Excellent power management

Dislike:

Large portions are Closed-source
Less stable than Debian
A lot less stable than Debian
Slow-ish boot
Hard to customize
No iptables
Not 64-bit clean (yet)

Like

- Dock
- Spaces
- great 3rd party freeware/shareware written by real hard core Unix geeks
- great hardware design

Dislike

- Finder still sucks (e.g. having to use command+ctrl+I to get summary info. on multiple files, not displaying file sizes consistently, etc., etc.)
- Limited choices for stuff like graphics cards in mac pro, but this seems to be improving

Don't have much time before I have to leave the house but lists like these make me think that people hate Apple because they can't afford any of their products even though they're almost reasonably priced!

I hate apple macs because:-

-They only have one mouse button,
-i cant have more than 3 usb ports,
-the technology is outdated,
-the macbook white cracks,
-the company doesn't know weather its ceo is alive or dead,
-people only use apple macs because they are cool,
-nobody needs an apple mac they are fine with a pc,
-every things white so it turns brown,
-apple stores are stupid because there's kids in there taking pictures of themselves,
-they haven't updated the displays for over 800 days,
-there are too many types of ipod, i get confused on which to get,
-there arent OLEDs in the ipods,
-the build quality is rubbish,
-the screens are real bad,
-they aren't compatible with windows,
-i cant find the start button,

-why does everything have an i slapped in front of it?
-i cant install flight simulator x on it.

APPLE MACS SUCK!

I can only chuckle at the bolded points.

Pros:
-How far it has come and how far it has always been/always will be ahead of other Operating Systems.

Cons:
-This progressive eradication of Aqua.
-Their target audience. (Although this is a fault with Apple more than OS X)

like-
-UB trackpads have solved the single mouse button problem
-the dock
-power management is great
-time machine
-SPACES! glad this isn't limited to linux anymore
-general ease of use, stability

dislike-
-minimal customization options(hardware and software)like themes, etc.
-(on leopard) inability to automatically open a folder icon on the dock in the finder like in tiger
-my dock changes sizes when i restart or log out(i'm very ocd and i want it the same width as the hinge of my MacBook!!)

that's about it

The ones about windows support and the start menu are silly, I agree, but the crappy screens and build quality are a valid point on some models. I have a white plastic MacBook and rubbish is the best word to describe its build quality. As far as screens are concerned - this says a lot.

It's not fair to generalise it, sure, unibody laptops are well built and 24" iMacs have cool displays, but it could be that the person who complained about the issues had a problematic model, so we shouldn't just mock him.

Pros:
The stability - I've never had the OS crash, I've never had to reinstall the OS like I always end up doing on my PC when nothing else seems to work, multiple programs running is never a problem, and on and on...

Cons:
Is it just me or does anyone else hate that spacey start up splash screen - trivial I know. I'd like to see iCal improved with a more sophisticated look and roll overs that give you more info with out double clicking. I'd like to be able to select a default stationary in Mail.

I like most things about OS X (only been using it for 2 years)

The only downsides for me are

Default dictionary is US
Safari only searched google.com from address bar

I know these can be addressed with 3rd party features, but for me the os should be able to do this

iCal do not like the Leopard version, Tiger one was much better
Finder I find very annoying
Cover flow I dislike and dont like this taking over more applications

I would like more customisation, like above, natively in the os instead of having to use 3rd party apps for things

I don't really hate Macs I like both Mac and Windows. But what I do hate about Macs is SOME Mac users. Especially when they say "I hate Microsoft" and have no justification. Or they say they hate the CEO of microsoft when they have no personal relationship with him whatsoever. Or when they refuse to buy anything microsoft just out of spite. Oh yeh and whenever I talk to a Mac user and they find out I use a pc then i better be prepared to waste 15 ****ing minutes of my time coz now they have to argue about it.

I agree. When I say that I dislike microsoft, I like to back it up with why. I have not had good experiences with microsoft products or customer service in the past, but if people are happy with a pc and windows, it's fine with me.

Leopard Software Update:

I put off installing the things until the computer is unneeded. I hit install and type the password. Then I come back to it and it just downloaded the update without installing the update
Somesimes after leaving it all night to do it
Tiger would not do this. It would install the updates and you could use the computer during the process. When it finished you were asked to reboot.

anything bigger then that is too much effort and not worth it? seriously?

OS X has a massive flaw in its defragmentation system, because you can't actually defragment the drive without 3rd party software, and please don't tell me you don't need to because OS X does it for you, yes it does but only for small files. This is annoying when you're trying to partition your drive for windows (yes windows) and it won't let you because your drive is too fragmented. :(

When this happened to me i had to manually look through the sectors near the end of the drive and then move the files to my external, and securely delete, then partition and move the files back. Damn it took a while.

I could help you with the customization side of things, themes and custom icons/docks etc. It's really easy, far easier than how people do it on windows - and its much safer - you only need to back-up and replace a few files/images - not run a bunch of third-party software in the background.

yes. too much effort for the OS because it will impact on the users experience and etc. if there is a dmg, zip, large photoshop file etc and it wanted to defrag it itself would you seriously want the computer moving a 500mb, 1gb, 5gb file while you are working??

i sure know that i wouldnt.

sure a defrag "utility" might come in handy, performance wouldnt increase that much though, if you dont like it go with Disk Warrior?

yes im well aware of that otherwise i wouldnt have said it ;) why is it a massive flaw?? does it qualify as a flaw because you came from the Windoze™ world and think that everything always needs to be defragged?? (not stereotyping, just trying to figure out your view).

soo you tried to partition a mac drive (HFS) into what, NTFS? why would you do that?? havent you heard of software that lets you read/write to mac drives?? would have seemed the much simpler way to me.

what app did you use? id love to get a hold of that. on my external HDs i have anywhere from 30% to 60% fragmentation, they still work extremely fast.. i cant see why it would take a while to copy them off..

please do tell.

oh and what has happened to ZFS btw?

Oh right sorry i didn't quite understand what you meant, i thought you meant its too much effort so theres no point in defragmenting, not the system being put under too much stress to do it on a regular basis. :)

Well, yeah i do agree its not a massive flaw but it would be nice if there was a function which lets you defragment.

I didn't think about Disk Warrior, i'll try that

A Boot Camp partition, and yeah NTFS, and yeah i use Mac Drive to access my macintosh partition whilst on the boot camp, windows side of things.

It's called iDefrag, its a nice piece of software

Pro:
Being the only system which offers stability, security, ease of use, hassle-free experience and good software support.

Cons:
High Price.
Less software support, even from major developers.

Likes: Nice design, stacks, expose

Dislikes: Finder, Safari, needing to have the OS booted to eject a CD.

Forgive me for being a non-nerd but what is unixy?

He's just saying that he likes the fact that OSX is a Unix operating system (so do I). I find his comment about it not being Unixy enough very amusing. It's not unix-like, or almost unix. It IS a Unix OS.

This is really nice if you are familiar with using other unix operating systems on the command line because doing so with OSX is very similar. It comes with all the standard command line unix utilities one would expect. Plus, if you download XCode, you can program/compile/debug/etc using the same command-line tools one would use if programming on any other unix system. This is one of the main reasons I switched from using Windows PCs to Macs.
